pics of dark and light cabs in the same kitchens?

as we get closer to actually building my new kitchen i need to give my kd pics of my favorite kitchens, and i cannot find the file anywhere.

so help, please, with some pictures of dark painted cabs with lighter painted focal cabs. i seem to remember one i liked quite a lot which had dark espresso cabs all around the perimeter and a lighter painted island.

i will have a large chestnut farm table instead of an island, and dark base cabs with a lighter painted walk-in butlers' pantry, a la sweetsavannah's gorgeous pantry.

i've got indigestion after looking for that file all day--i fear it never made it out of my old laptop onto this one when it crashed last year. so much work gone forever i think! thanks for your help!

Did you try looking on the Finished Kitchen Blog? Lots of great examples there.

Hi Fallingwaters,

I will try to help you. Can you give me a few more details?
I have endless pictures of both dark and light cabs and
will wind up crashing gardenweb with all of them.
If you can give me a bit more information. Style?
Country? Farhouse? Modern, Contemporary? Urban? French?
British Colonial? Spanish?
Maybe a school house light, a color tile, wood floors or
maybe it had red flowers on the counter...some little
extra detail could help me to try to help you.
I may not have the original photo but we can certainly
get more inspiration.
Don't give up we can do this... : )

Thank you everyone for your kind comments. I'm beaming like a proud new mama! I should have taken a photo of my making dinner mess to show that it doesn't always look so 'pristine'. Though it's back to looking that way now. :) I have been without a dishwasher for 3 years and boy am I loving having it back! Morton5: Thanks, the BR does seem to be the perfect compliment to the dark cabs; the lightness is the right strength to give me the contrast, but as you say the little bits of colour tie in with the dark cabs, and keeps it from looking a cold contrast. The granite guys were suitably impressed and said of all the granite they've seen they couldn't imagine a better combination; mind you they may say that to all the proud new granite owners! LOL. jb: what sort of not-so-nice streaks do some of the slabs have? I have a couple of areas of speckly black streaks, but they are really pretty and part of what I love most. jb & kelleg: The tile is porcelain from Casa Roma called India Bahir; it is basically a grayish white with a walnut stain that gives it an old world patina. Members of the board helped me decide on it when I was afraid from the sample I had that it would look 'dirty'. It doesn't look dirty, but it does hide dirt & coffee drips etc very, very well! I have had workmen traipsing through with work boots for 3 weeks & even with rainy days & I have yet to wash the floor, or feel I need to. I've swept & given a wet swipe to the odd coffee splotch but that's been it! I had wished I had used a bit darker gray grout, but it is gradually darkening down so I expect it will mellow out a bit more yet. The paint is BM Silver Fox. It works with the Bianco Romano perfectly and seems to have enough taupe that it works well with the dark stain of the cabs too. vakitchen: You are going to LOVE your Bianco Romano with your Cherry Cabs! Southernstitcher: I was hoping you'd see this thread as I know you were waiting to see the dark/light combination! Does it help you get closer to making your decision? Lynda: The knobs & pulls are from Home Depot. Very inexpensive. Knobs are square- Manor & I can't remember what the pulls were called. They are quite linear looking, which fits well with both the shaker door profile and the overall parallel rows of my cabs/island.

I am new to this forum. We're in the final stages of building a new house (only wish I knew about you guys sooner!) and I love seeing all of your awesome work! We put in espresso stained rift oak slab front cabinets (not too far off of celticmoon's awesome refinishing of her 20 year old oak cabinets!). Our paint we chose is BM Timothy Straw (2149-40) which is a goldish-lime green color. It is bright, but not too bright for our taste. I think we'll love it in our Seattle November weather! We also chose it (over 15 other test paints ranging from tan to gold to sage and even some blues) because it goes really well with the yellow-orange tones of the VG fir woodwork and Red Birch floors in the attached great room. I am SO happy every time I see it!!! Our backsplash will be a blend of 2x12 glass sticks, laid horizontally in a random brick/stick pattern, from Statements Flow Glass line (link below). It's mostly a blend of Glacier, Pepper and Ivory with 5% Mint and Chocolate added for little pops of color. Countertops are my next decision...I know I want light, but am not sure if I'll go for natural stone or quartz yet. I lost my camera battery charger this weekend, but will take some pics of the house once I have my new one and am charged up! :) Deb in Seattle Here is a link that might be useful: Statements Flow Glass line

Thanks, everyone! Wow, I really appreciate the thoughts, and the example kitchens, both of which are gorgeous. I'm going to be installing undercabinet lighting. And I may install recessed lighting and/or a pendant over the peninsula, but I'm waiting on that. I'll keep looking toward light counters... some of the granites that I have found i like in photos (kashmir white for instance) aren't readily available in my area (I think that its quarry closed down anyway). I've been having a difficult time finding a light granite that I really like but going out to look again today. I don't want to go too gray as an undertone but would prefer balance of warm/cool in the mix of colors. Or just quartz... So any suggestions on that, based on your experience, also appreciated! (Organic white Ceasarstone- check, I'll look at that one!) If I can't come up with a definite on the counter by tomorrow, I have to give a cabinet color.... given my Super White trim, and the fact that the kitchen has no light, I'm thinking something that blends with that but is not so stark white. Decorator white sound good?

pcjs..I did see Premier cabinets at HD...the sales guy said to stay away as they are a bit cheap..and flimsy and difficult to install. There was a display in fawn glaze that I thought looked very nice. I don't have to have top of the line, nor can I afford it, I just don't want cabinets falling apart in 5 years! igloochic..that is the tone we may go for..there are 3 basic tones, orange/brown/red...my DH goes for the red toned ones (but he's color blind and always drawn to dark colors)..I think a brown town would look best but don't like any I see as they all look dull..so we're back to the orange toned stains.... mustbenuts..I do love that second photo..simple shaker cabinet but it looks so modern. I'd love to know the maker, but I'm sure I can't afford an Italian designer! Thanks so much for your comments..it's so hard as our granite is at the granite yard over 1 hour away and I can't just run over there and hold cabinet doors against it.....any thoughts to mixing uppers and lowers so DH gets his stained and I get my painted? Then of course there's the whole backsplash saga..and a floor...I'm not getting much sleep these days...I'm off to Lowes and HD again right now just to study the styles and colors. Yesterday I spent over 2 hours with a HD "design consultant" and she didn't know squat. I have "0" confidence that I'd end up with everything I want/need after an order was placed with her. I'd love to just order cabinets off the internet, but am too paranoid that when there's a problem (and there always is) how long it wil take to resolve. I may look at Buycabinets.com but it seems like a 50/50 shot at having luck with them. Any other ideas, I'd love to hear..thanks!

My never-quite-finished kitchen can't compare with the ones shown above but there may be something that lends a small bit of inspiration. The unpainted cabinets eventually will be white semi-gloss & the black/green cabinets are milk paint.

oh wow, you guys are so great!! thankyou!!! i am leaning towards black/green doors myself, with a cream accent.
yours is so pretty, it makes me think i may pull it off--and it's not a crazy plan. so thanks so much for sharing.
gotta run, will be camping for a few days--hopefully not obsessing over my kitchen while at the lake witht he kids.

Thanks, Boxer. Since it wasn't realistic to try to recreate a working antebellum kitchen (outside, no less), I went with the idea that the original was probably utilitarian & IMO stainless is the epitamy of that. Whether the original owner from 1858 would agree remains a mystery - doubtful since this room used to be one of the formal rooms! The cabinets on either side & above the fireplace were copied from painted/stained dark originals that had been moved to the basement in the 1930's (except they're 3' taller, LOL). The biggest challenge was to leave the exsisting openings & find enough depth for countertops that didn't project out into the room - ahhhhh, the joys of old house living.......

Do you have any cupboards containing silver, antique or otherwise? Am interested in the concept--am an old silver nut and have unfortunately lost my mega-display cabinet in the renovation. Would like inspiration.

p.s.
Wish I could live and cook in a really old house, at least for a while. Where we live, 1920 is considered antique.

AntiqueSilver - I prefer your kitchen to the professional photos above. It really is beautiful - I particularly love that you used multiple colors and surfaces/textures successfully - something that can be frowned upon by some but when it is done well, wow. I was interested in the idea, but not comfortable enough in my abilities/or confident in the idea to commit. Fortunately, I do have more than one area of painted cabinets that I may add an additional color as I live with and feel out the kitchen (they are all white now) inspired by you and other brave souls. For now, additional color will just have to come in accessories...

fallingwaters - sorry I hijacked the post, I just could not help it. I really love the mixed color look and hope you find some inspiration. I looked through my files & didn't find anything good to share. Sorry & good luck.

Fallingwater, black/green & cream would be stunning. I probably would have used cream instead of white but I have a lot of white trim throughout the house & cream might have looked 'dirty' in close proximity. Instead of using high gloss like the trim, I'm using semi-gloss on the cabinets. Sorry if we've highjacked your thread.

Florantha, no, I don't have a display cabinet for my silver either; I keep china in the glass front over the fireplace. There's a better photo of it on the other thread started by Country_Smiles. My hollow ware lives in a trunk & flatware is in the sideboard or in chests parked under the sideboard. The neatest place I ever saw to keep silver was on a tour of a c. 1905 Beau Arts house. Off the kitchen, they had a walk-in silver vault (did I mention the house was based on Versaille?). What was left of the original kitchen was great, too.

Sparkle, thank you for the compliments; you wouldn't believe how much I agonized over the red wall! If you choose your favorite color combinations that you live with every day (especially if they're neutrals), it's hard to go wrong. Think of your favorite outfits. But it's only paint - it's not the worst thing in the world to change if you have to, LOL! I'm sure you'll do fine.
