Sink cutout to big...now what

I had my stainless double bowl undermount installed yesterday. It was supposed to be flush mounted, but the fabricator did a positive reveal. Not only is it a positive reveal, but it's 1/2 inch by the faucet and 1/4 inch around the other sides.....too big and uneven. He's coming to try to even it out, but there will still be a reveal. So do I settle with that sink being not right, get a top mount (nice one) or do I have him take the whole piece of granite and recut it. If I go with the last choice, there is a great chance the seam won't match...I have yellow river... Soooo...what should I do??

I would not get a top mount, in my opinion, the best part of having granite is to have an undermount sink...

I cannot say much about an uneven reveal, but see nothing wrong with a positive reveal in general, it is easy to see the dirt and keep clean. I will let others, more expert, give their opinion as to whetehr you should accept the granite or not.

Do not get a top mount. Ever. In my opinion they are awful-looking and impossible to keep clean around the rim. On the other hand, a positive reveal has some benefits, including less dish and glass breakage (the sink is more forgiving than the granite) and less likelihood of chipping the granite around the edge. My sink edge is flush with the granite edge, and after 12 years, I have lots of dings along the edge of the granite from where DH carelessly bangs the cast iron pots against the edge. I am getting a positive reveal on my next remodel.

I also have a sink base cab of 33" and bought the ticor S205..it states that you can have a minimum 33" cab..I showed my cabinet guy and he said should be fine might need to do a little cutting...

You definitely don't want to do it all with a router, but you could rough it out with a jigsaw and use a light router cut to clean it up. It would be best to use either a guide bushing or a flush-trimming bit with a bearing to guide the router along a template, which you'd have to make. I'd use a brand-new carbide cutter, and the larger diameter the better. You could also plunge-cut the straight sections with a circular saw, jigsaw the curves as close as you dare and then clean up those curves with one of those sanding drums you can chuck in an electric drill. This method would require a steady hand, but avoid the risk of tearout.

Grab that stainless flap with vice grips and wriggle it twenty times. It will break off and you can mount your faucet. Or tap it flush with a hammer and make a continuous non-compressive waterproof shim (v32 plastic laminate), hot melt it in place and install the faucet. If your sink has no mechanical fasteners, I like your plumber's idea. After removing the steel, have him reinstall the sink with a Hercules Universal Sink Harness. If it's his first one, it will take about 2 hours.

Would you believe that after the countertop people have already agreed to recut everything, my builder is asking me to change brands of sinks and modify cabinets so they can just cut a bigger sinkhole. Thanks for the replies! I still don't know what to do...
~ I'm definitely not getting the top mount
~ I spent the day looking for a bigger sink....there are none :(
~ I think I'm going to the granite yard tomorrow to see if there is a piece that matches the seam. If it appears that it will look bad pieced, then I'll accept the sink and ask for a discount.
~ I'm just ready to get into my kitchen!

I guess the most important issues are:

1. Have you paid in full, or held something back
2. Is the fabricator interested in pleasing you

I would look at it for one or two days, then decide. One way or another, you are the customer, and you have to be pleased.

You're right detroit_burb! The guys are here trying to at least make the reveal match around all sides.....it doesn't seem like it's going to work though. It's just too big! I have NOT paid in full...thank goodness...so I do have that in my favor. The fabricator/owner gave me his personal cell phone number (although has not taken the time to come see for himself) and is promising to do whatever necessary.

It's a wait and see thing now.....I'll keep y'all posted!!
