Hmm... Stainless Steel Cleaning REVISITED

Hi Everyone...

I read the recent thread (linked below) about cleaning stainless steel appliances, and a few people mention using paper towels.

But when I looked at the manual for my new stainless steel range hood last night, it says in BOLD and CAPITAL letters:

DO NOT USE PAPER TOWELS TO CLEAN STAINLESS STEEL.

I dunno, just thought I'd toss that out there. My hood is 18 gauge stainless, fwiw.

Thoughts?

I dunno. I used Windex and paper towels on my stainless range hood (monogram brand). I'd try it on a secret spot. Maybe there is a smudgeproof wax on it or something.

I use papertowels (and spray cleaner). Or a microfiber dishcloth (hot water and dish liquid). Or a sponge. Depends on the mess and what I have in my hand at the time.

I didn't read the other thread.

Papertowels have not scratched my hood or fridge. Maybe if they are recycled brown ones with tree bits in them?

My fridge is GE. If the directions say that I never read them. :) Oh well!

I don't think it's the white color that can disappoint, Florantha, but rather the type of finish these pieces (white or black) can have. Many of the current appliance models have a pebbly painted (or plasticked?) metal surface that, while great for disguising fingerprints in a busy household, doesn't lend itself to either modern sleekness or a period look. I do wish they'd bring back simple, durable enameled finishes - my 1949 white stove is as bright and shiny as the day it was made. And that puppy has been scrubbed daily for ... 62 years now. I agree, peanut. If someone wanted to give me a nice white (or any color, for that matter) Chambers range, I'd be a happy woman indeed. I had one in my first apartment in downtown Salt Lake City many years ago, and I didn't realize how fortunate I was. Lavender - what about a blue Chambers? They're a little hard to find, but they're a great blue that might work well in your kitchen.

Clarification on Stainless steel toe kicks, the product by Doors2Me.com is toe kick cover that originally was designed for refacing applications - http://doors2me.com/toe-kick-covers/ you CAN cut it with regular utility knife and you DO NOT need to use any glue, it is peel and stick (comes self adhesive). However, you do need to make sure that the surface where you apply it is clean of dust, dirt, particles and etc. The best thing to use for cleaning is just regular alcohol. Doors2me has been selling the product for over 10 years and its made in Austria so its top quality product that is user friendly and made to last. Also you can apply it to curvy surfaces. If you need actual toe kick 3/4" thick in stainless steel finish then easiest way is to cut some melamine panels and apply ss toe kick covers over it.

One way of being warm is by using warm colors. Sounds obvious, but the difference can be really striking. You didn't say what color the glass tile backsplash will be. Or what color you were thinking of for the range. Bluestar number 8023 and 8004 are very warm without being primary, and most of the colors under 5000 are also warm. If you coordinate your backsplash tiles with one of them, the kitchen can't help but have a warm feeling, even if you painted the cabinets ice blue :) On the other hand, icy, wintry colors are going to give you that cold look that you don't want, so stay away from pale blues and purples, greys, browns and blacks. You can also warm up the room with bright, cozy accents, in warm colors, like a cookie jar, fun clock, or bright colored small appliances. The trick to making it not look industrial is first to have a few things out, rather than all put away like you would in a sterile environment, and then to be sure the things you do display are broken up in color, rather than monotone. I chose to post the items below because they show the principle of broken up color. Whatever your taste is you can do this, except if it's "clean, industrial", since that's what you're trying to get away from. Basically a "warm" look is opposite to a "clean" look.

@littlegreeny, what exactly came of those Reeva Dishwasher Pods? I remember seeing those a while ago, and then.. very similar soft tablets/pods at Sam's Club. They both look like Huish/Sun Formula's.. but I can't be too sure. KIK/Korex (another manufacturer altogether, used to make a lot of ALDI and Wal-Mart stuff. @larsi_gw's, Miele DW will hate it. But the Sun/Huish Store Brand Dishwasher Gel made for Aldi, Target, Safeway, Albertsons, and quite a few other stores, reminds me a lot of the Lime-Green Cascade Gel that a few of us love with STPP Added. It seems to have a little bit more chlorine content in the bottle, and you can certainly smell it. It also has a really nice, bleachy lemony scent. And from what I can recall, the Chlorine Bleach that is used is capable of breaking down Proteins & Starches, just like Cascade. For some of you, who liked the previous suggestion of Adding STPP + Cascade Gel, it could be another product worth trying. :-)

I use paper towels and Easy Off brand Stainless Steel polish on my frig and DW. That doesn't mean it's correct - just what's easy. Probably a microfiber cloth or old dishtowel would be better and more eco-friendly. Thanks for the warning, though. I'll check my hood manual when it goes in.

I'm guessing, but I bet the caution about paper towels is about scratching. Paper is notoriously scratchy. If you have a satin or brushed finish you probably would never know.

What I can't find is a good recommendation for cleaning the stainless inside of an oven. The outsides come clean with warm water and a soft rag. The insides however, and I have two of these things, are becoming harder to clean, especially around the convection fans. And of course the contortions on the step stool to even reach are worthy of an animated feature as well. :( What to do?

It's me again... :)

Thank you for the replies. I spent a lot of time reading up on cleaning stainless steel via google. It's crazy-making!!!

I did use the formula of rubbing alcohol, water and essential oil that was suggested in the thread I linked to in the original post. It worked well, but I'm still concerned with how safe it is long-term on the stainless.

fori... my manual also says ammonia is a no no. Doesn't Windex have ammonia? Like I said, crazy-making. Maybe I should just use spit polish?

plllog... I remember you have chemical sensitivity. Are you able to use baking soda to make a cleaning paste?

One thing that I read today is that Arm & Hammer Oven Cleaner is declared "non-toxic" by Consumers Union, for whatever that's worth. I read it here at eartheasy.com.

I've wondered about cleaning the convection fan area. My oven isn't installed yet.
