Using Porcelain Tile as Countertop

We are thinking of using 12x12 porcelain tiles as countertop in our kitchen. We plan on using 1/16" unsanded or epoxy grout. Going to use a 6x12 porcelain tile for the backsplash with a 12x12 mosaic tile above that. I'm looking at a polished porcelain tile by Orion (Home Depot special order). Using wood trim for the countertop edges. The Home Depot flooring associate told me that this tile would be installed just like any porcelain tile, and that it does not require any sealing (grout would require sealing). He also said that the polish would not wear over time.
I'm wondering if this polished tile will show scratches? Will it be durable enough for countertop?
Trying to make good decisions, while redoing this on a budget (approx 55sq ft of countertop).

This Orion polished porcelain tile is through-body and is rectified. It has a durability rating of 4 out of 5.

A real wood butcher block top would look a LOT better. It's not only the grout lines, although that's a biggie. It would just look, well, "college dorm apartment", without the inexpensiveness of it. You can be creative on a budget, but sometimes thinking outside the box needs to stay outside the box if you want a certain look. If you're doing the tiling, it might end up being as expensive as a nice Boos butcher block. (A lot more than Ikea) If you have to pay to have it tiled, granite slab would be cheaper. You could even do a simple stained plywood top with real wood edging for a fraction of the tile and have a nice looking counter until your budget recovered to get the one you really want.

I'm making a pine countertop for my island. It will have a cooktop in it and I'm only using mineral oil on it. That way if something particularly ugly happens I can sand out that spot. I'd love to have that scrubbed look, but I think that's an age + multiple cleaning process. The sides have a chamfer so I'm planing the sides that will be glued & pocket-hole screwed together, then sanding for a smooth finish. $18 for the 2x wood in 8' lengths, which is the exact size of the ugly laminate that's there. I'm going for a rustic vibe and figure an $18 investment, plus the planer I'll use on other projects, is worth the experiment. The other laminate tops are painted and sealed. Unfortunately I have some areas that need to be retouched, after using Lysol Kitchen cleaner. I should have stuck with vinegar and water! Now, I have to figure out a top for my vanity. I'd love to have Water-loxed walnut, but DH is messy and leaves puddles on the current cultured marble. I might have to spend some dough for that one!

"I beg to differ." Me too! This was my first try at a kitchen countertop. This one is actually ceramic. We used Laticrete SpectraLock grout and it was great. One morning I came out to find they my DH has spilled tea on the counter before he went fishing. It cleaned right up. This was in a second house, and I was working on my inkjet printer (wasn't working). I gave up and when we came back up a couple weeks later with another printer, I found the magenta ink had leaked on the counter. OMG! I thought I was going to be in BIG trouble. But it also cleaned off with a little Soft Scrub. Phew!! Our next project will have porcelain tiles. I purchased these at a tile auction. And also these for the backsplash: Plan on either using the mosaic's as the countertop edging or wood.

Alright - after much trial and error - I hope this goes to a picture of the kitchen. We have removed the far left cabinet and will put in a black double oven (electric) in a 96"x 33" cabinet. The openspace is 48" and we are installing a 48" Sinkbase and a 36" gas cooktop. As you see there will be only 6 inches on either side and a little front and back. Just wondering if a dark brown tile would work and look decent? Here is a link that might be useful:

The tile will be stain resistant. The complaints I hear about that type of install is about the wood band, it will not hold up near as well as the tile.
For that type of install to turn out nice you will need an installer who is capable of installing with very tight grout joints and not leaving any lippage between tiles. Not all can do that.

I have a polished porcelain tile counter top now and it is virtually indestructible. It does not scratch and you can put hot things directly on it. I do not cut directly on it. I always have used a cutting board. I have a wood border on it that has not held up too well over the last 14 yrs. I am redoing my kitchen and plan on getting granite or quartz. But the porcelain has held up very well. Good luck with your kitchen!

I don't know if this would appeal to you, but Schluter makes a metal (aluminum) edge that is made to be the edge of a countertop. It should hold up better than wood, but it will also look like, well, a metal edge.

I second what kevdp said about a good installer for 1/16" joints.

I've seen tile counter tops, and they can be gorgeous. There are some wonderful tiles - you can do so much with them. But if the wood edge doesn't hold up well, that wouldn't be good. Could you do tile in a limited area and use something more durable for the area that will get more use?

Even epoxy grout collects debris and stains.
