Now that you are done or almost done with your new home
Comments (28)HA = that's funny "buildinghome". We had zero problems, not one tiny hitch. Yet the home started off at $240K and we kept adding little things. Ended up at $253K. Little things add up. Double the size of the deck, better appliances, better furnace (make sure you get a good furnace and not cheap builders furnace). Upgrade from a cheap Lennox gas fireplace (a true builders box - run away if you can) to a Mendota. Make sure the water heater is not sitting on the floor (rust). Make sure you have a regular door in the garage so you will not have to open the big door all the time. 12x14 foot deck is too small for real use, we doubled the size and because we face south we used wood and not composite with gets REAL hot in summer. If you can get an extra foot of overhang do it. Good for shade and run off. If you are on a hill make sure the garage is on the downhill side of the house. Make sure you have windows on all four sides. I'm surprised to see so many spec homes with no windows in the sides! Wash tub in the laundry room is a must! Outdoor faucets, put them higher up so you do not have to crawl on the ground to hook up the hose. If you are on a budget, get the expensive lights for the living areas and go cheap in the bathrooms and other areas. Then once you get back on your feet buy the good lights for the bathrooms. Paint everything neutral until you see how the light falls in the house. Don't go fancy YET! We would also build in a heartbeat . . . . . if we had too! Comments (15)Thanks ks_toolgirl :) I feel fortunate to have been able to been privy to a tour of the home, and he was so eager to show us around. My camera is huge, it certainly wasn't hidden! And the judge knew I was taking pictures and I had told him that I knew a bunch of people that would love to see them also...he seemed to have no problem with it at all. He didn't ask me not to publicize, nor put any limits on what I could and could not photograph. I wouldn't ever want to do anything that would bring any bad events into his life, and I wouldn't want to think that my innocent actions caused him or his wife any harm....so I can see patser and karinl's points also. I actually deleted the pictures to keep the thread from disintegrating into a debate/discussion on the ramifications of posting pictures. My intent was to share my good fortune of being treated to a tour of this wonderful homestead, and to share the experience with other people of similar interests :)...See MoreBeach House Kitchen Done, Done, Done
Comments (23)Thanks to all of you for the nice comments. eam44 - the fridge is in the corner, see the last photo. It's pretty plain, so I didn't include a picture. I give all the credit for the colors and detail to my DW. She did a great job. I'm the builder, tiler, and cabinet maker - she's the color expert, painter, and detail person. And we both take loads to the dump! It's taken us a number of years to learn not only how to work together, but compliment each other's strengths. Once we figured that out, projects like this have become much more enjoyable....See MoreFinishing a shower for use before house is done
Comments (31)For those answering, small town and rural building departments can definitely be a lot looser. My grandparents never got their CO (that was in the late 80s) neither did my parents (that was in the early 2000s). The building department just never came back for a final inspection. My grandparents had more recent permits for two additions and there wasn't any issue with the original build never being officially closed out. You are probably in a better position than any of us to gauge what would happen in your situation whether to ask the question or assume it is not going to be an issue. Other than showering in the new house you won't actually be occupying it any more than you currently do while doing the construction....See Moresallysue_2010
