Grout color for Durango tiles and mother of pearl accent tiles

I was not sure which color grout to choose for my backsplash. I ended up picking a dark cream color which matches the Durango tumbled tiles, but does not match the mother of pearl little subway accent tiles. I plan on installing the MOP in a two inch high stripe along the length of the backsplash. The grout is much darker than the whitish MOP. I have time to select a different grout color - do you think that the dark cream color will look dorky?

Here is a picture of the MOP, but I don't have pictures of the Durango or the grout. But the Durango (looks like a light Travertine) is darker than the MOP.

since posting this i have found another supplier in the philippines who has been much more responsive and available to answer questions (on the phone and in perfect english...). the product is more expensive, starting at about $35 per sq for hammer shell and going up to about $60 per sq for mother of pearl (more for accent tiles). our tile will be no joints, mesh mounts for walls and porcelain backed for wet areas (inside shower). they also ship free samples. good luck! contact: john romain exclusivetiles@gmail.com www.eleganceofliving.com

We are currently remodeling our master bath, and we are using the Walker Zanger Vintage Glass tile (color: Zinc Lustre, which is the color shown in the link in your second post). We love it! The tile is not currently 100% installed, and it is not yet grouted, so I am not ready to show pictures, but we are having it cover much of the bathroom. I like how it is subtly iridescent. It was definitely not inexpensive, but really makes a statement. I can't wait to see it finished.

I recently used some MOP tiles for mosaic/art work. They were actually called "abalone," but I think they're the same thing. They're available in several colors, and are shimmery and gorgeous. These puppies are amazingly HARD! They are impossible to cut with regular 2-wheeled glass tile cutters, so I used them whole and mixed them in with glass tiles. They look completely different from glass tiles. I don't think you could reproduce the look with glass. Yes, they are quite thin, but they are strong as can be--much stronger than glass or porcelain tiles. I back-buttered the abalone/MOP with extra thinset b/c they are thinner than the glass tiles I was using. No problem. Grouting was not an issue in any way--there was no staining. I don't understand what the concern about grouting might be, in fact. They grouted up and cleaned up just like the glass tiles. Because I was using these for an art mosaic and not a standard installation, I did not use mesh. The tiles were loose, so I can't comment on any mesh-related issues. Hope this helps.

I have seen groutless mother of pearl tiles on TV and the internet and it looked beautiful. I would make sure the wall is already painted white and use a white thin set. You don't want any color to show through the iridescent tile. Don't worry about being first time tilers. We are DIYer and a few years ago we put up a ceramic tile backsplash in our kitchen. We never worked with tile before and were nervous. After watching some how to videos and a class done by the tile store we put in the backsplach. Couldn't believe how easy it was. It turned out perfect. 100 % better than what I see the pro's did on peoples posts. Really I don't understand how someone can mess up tiles so bad. Since then we even tore out a few tiles and replaced with new ones to put in a pot filler. Easy peasy. Just do your research on how to apply the mother of pearl tiles and go to it.

Adrienne, my sister's name BTW, I was hoping you would share where you got the MOP tiles. I have been looking for some time for MOP tiles that don't break the budget - although everything breaks the budget lately!!!

Can't help you on the grout color though - sorry. Maybe bumping this up again will get you a response.

I am going to pick them up tomorrow at Beaver Tile in Shelby Township, Michigan. I think they were about 24 or 23 bucks per square foot. Something like that - the price isn't on the invoice they gave me!

on another posting it was recommended to get some grout samples and do a mockup using the DRY grout
you blow it out with a hairdryer
I think that is a brilliant idea as that will give you an exact picture
