So I don't have a new fridge after all

I had found a fridge at the outlet store that was just what I hoped for: 30" width, 21 cf, French door, bottom freezer, stainless. A floor model with a few hardly noticeable scratches, and with the discounts I was saving over $850 from the retail full price! So I treated myself to a shiny new, larger fridge, that I hadn't planned on (I was shopping for a dishwasher, which I also got).

Well, they tried to deliver it today; I asked the delivery team if they would take off the doors (I was thinking of how to get it through the kitchen door) but no, they felt that they didn't need to do that. What they did need to do, though was remove the front and screen doors, remove the screen door closing mechanism, and even remove a piece of the trim.... and after all that, they scratched the front so badly when trying to maneuver it through, they themselves said "We have to take it back". Oh, and, "we should have taken off the doors."

So, it turns out, there are no more of this model available anywhere at even close to the price -- even checking nationwide at the outlet store's website.

I may be able to find a 30" single door, but now I will probably just wait and nurse my disappointment.

Come to think of it, even with the doors off it might not have made it through the kitchen doorway without removing some trim.

And it's so much easier to take off a fridge door than mess up the house doors. What they did makes no sense.!

That is so disappointing and frustrating. Just when you thought you had a great score, and all you got was a headache.

I'm sorry. Is there anything the store can do for you? Can new doors for the fridge be ordered?

Yeah, I second what he said - you can always remove a tree if it looks like the health of the others is at stake. And trees in the wild can grow surprisingly close together and still be ok (though it's not optimal.) I once saw an evergreen and a redbud that had grown so close together the redbud's trunk was entirely INSIDE the evergreen's limbs, and all you could see of the redbud was its outermost limbs stretching every which way out of the evergreen. Since it was in bloom at the time, it looked like the evergreen was exploding. Moral of the story is that they CAN survive like that, and sometimes it looks really amusing.

I do vermicomposting...I have a bin with worms in it that I use for kitchen composting. Granted these are a lot of worms in an enclosed container, but when I open the top (exposing them to sunlight), you can actually 'hear' them as they retreat deeper into the bin...it's really weird! I can imagine that with larger worms like nightcrawlers, that if you had a few out and about, you'd hear them as they retreat under leaves, etc., back down into the ground. ~Michele

We did this and it is one of my favorite things about the kitchen! (One reason we remodeled our old kitchen was that the 1940s fridge enclosure wouldn't accommodate modern fridge sizes, so I didn't want some future owner to be in the same quandary.) First, I would look at fridges and get a sense of what you might want just to be sure you know roughly what you're looking at. We built for a 36" fridge on the assumption that those will be around for a while. Our actual dimensions are 36 5/8", which happened to accommodate all of the fridges we were contemplating at the time---some can fit in a true 36" enclosure, and some (KitchenAid) are 35 5/8" and need a half inch on either side, so we built to the larger size. Our cabinetmaker then made edges to the cabinet that close the space to 36" so that it looks like a tight fit, but the fridge has air space. To deal with different heights in fridges---and this is where they seemed to vary more---we put in an adjustable shelf above the refrigerator; it can be set as low as 67" and as high as 84" which pretty much covered the universe of freestanding 36" fridges. At the lower heights it's a bookshelf and at the higher heights it becomes a tray shelf. The shelf is made to match the cabinets and has a rail attached to hang down 1.5", which makes it match the rails on the inset cabinetry on that wall and doubles as a way to hide the air space on top that most fridges require. This was a really good solution for us; we have 9' ceilings and stacked cabinets, so it left enough room for an 18" cabinet on top of the shelf that matches the top cabinets along the wall. We built our enclosure 25" deep since we didn't plan to have a fridge with water/ice, although 26" gives you a few more options if you need space for that. Our old fridge is tucked in there now, and actually looks pretty decent even though it's 30" deep. Hope that's useful!

I have a 36" rangetop and frequently use 4 burners, and sometime use 5. I've even used all 6! If you count having a pan of something from the ovens cooling on a burner or two, then I use 6 pretty regularly. Hey, that would be another "pro" for a cooking surface with more burners: using one or two as a cooling rack for oven items while still having other burners available for active cooking. If you choose rangetop and want that attractive 4 door look, I suggest having one wide drawer with the front made to look like two separate drawers. 24" wide drawers won't be effective for storing pots and pans. Wider is usually better.

The store offered my a 10% off coupon (for future purchases) if I would keep the damaged one! but, since I don't foresee any other purchases there, and they were major scratches, that didn't help.
If I thought they could be buffed out reasonably I would have considered it.

With it being a scratch/dent sale, replacement doors unfortunately not an option. (good thought though!)

When combined with the mess left by the drywall guys today, I have a super excuse for a big margarita tonight!

I checked out new fridge doors for a client who hired a super cheap guy who came with a truck full of junk to trade her new fridge for the old one in the house she bought (putting the older one in her house she was selling)

He carefully took the doors off the scratched and dented fridge but moved the brand new one without even wrapping it, The new one looked worse than the old one when he was finished but she got exactly what she paid for.

Anyway the door was half the full retail price of her fridge. They are expensive.

So sorry to hear of your experience. Our new fridge was delivered Tuesday. We have French doors in our library. DH told the delivery guys to bring the truck around the back and bring it in that way and then went back to his outside work. Some time later he went down to check up on them and they were at the front door measuring it up to make sure they could get it inside. The guys didn't speak English so he had to try to direct them with sign language. They finally understood and it was safely delivered.

This is very timely since I have a KA CD refrigerator and a GE cafÃÂ© gas range from Sears Outlet coming today to my totally unrenovated kitchen, and I'm already a little nervous about it. I had to hack out one of the ancient cabinets already in order to be sure there will be enough space for the new fridge, which seemed a reasonable thing to do since they will be demo'd as soon as I can get some contractor to finalize a plan and hand me a contract to sign. I have a small house and a currently tiny galley kitchen, so I'm already anxious about the possibility of damage for the fridge in particular.... Fingers crossed.

I wonder if one of Them needed a new fridge.

Sometimes I wonder if, when something is already a scratch and dent, and already mostly written off, if they don't damage it further, get it for almost nothing and get it for the price of a new door at an employee discount. I wouldn't put it past someone to think up something like this.

Check Craigslist. We were able to replace our microwave door this way. They had a MW that didn't run. I had a MW with a broken door. I had a brand new pair of roller skates, they had a brand new key. : )

They gave the door to me for free.
