What's so great about sink grids?

When buying my Shaw's sink, the salesperson just asked me if I wanted one and I said, of course, without thinking, what's another $100? Now that I have one, it's more irritating than anything else. Yes, it protects the sink from things that crash. I got that. It's also going to be an improvised dish drainer, since I don't like seeing a dish drainer on the counter and don't own one. But isn't a sink supposed to be pretty well indestructible? And it doesn't protect the sink at all from goopy things. I have to lift it out to wipe down the sink from coffee stains. And I suspect it'll be a PITA to clean. Please, can someone explain why a sink grid is a good idea before I post to the "Now that I have X I could have lived without it" thread?
