What about having the counters flush with the cabinets?
Comments (5)You only give up 1'' or so of cabinet dimension (per side) for a overhang. In a 5' x 10' island, would you even notice the resultant decrease in storage? It'll only be about 5% of total cabinet volume. With such a large island, the volume at the very center is likely to be wasted anyway, unless you plan drawers that pull out over 2'. If the seating is on the 10' side, far more volume will be wasted (awkward to have drawers in the seating overhang, opposite drawers need to be up to 3.5' deep, more typically seen in a morgue, then is there enough aisle or do you have to climb into the drawer to open it fully . . . ) I guess I'm saying, I'm confused about why you're faced with this dilemma. Seems to me, do the normal overhang, shrink the island cabinet by 1'' each side (go wild and do 1.5''!), the only thing you'll have less of is wasted volume in the interior center....See Morecountertop overhang with flush inset base cabinets?
Comments (4)I have inset cabinets and did a 1/2 inch overhang. I have a traditional kitchen. I agonized over this and at this point cannot remember why but then worried that it was too short and stuff would run down the counter. I've had no trouble with it but would be more concerned if it was smaller because of the lack of the buffer to the cabinet fronts- for both standing in front or drips coming down....See MoreCountertop overhang support with Ikea Sektion cabinets
Comments (1)Hi, i truly do not like the new metal bracket supports. The old Akurum cabinets had a piece that ran side to side in the front and back similar to what's in your picture. What I did was skip the metal supports and added the pieces from side to side in the front and back. My cabinets are white and I bought an interior shelf so that the front would have facing, but you could always buy the iron-on banding at Home Depot and it would look just as good. I had cover panels to add so I just screwed them in on the sides of the cabinets. However, I can see that you side is exposed. So You can either use 18 guage nails and then put a tip of putty to hide them or you can use 'L' brackets from underneath. Good Luck....See MoreCounter stool against counter with no overhang?
