Pics and dimensions of stacked cabs w/ less than 9 foot ceilings
Comments (4)I have 8' ceilings and have made my own stacked cabinets. I took 42" cabs and put a rail where 30" would end at the top, on a regular cabinet. I put 30" doors on the bottom and 12" doors on the top. Voila! Stacked cabinets. My evil plan is to someday buy (or make -- I haven't given up) beaded inset face frames. I'll make the frame the entire 42" tall, with the dividing rail. On another wall, I just found 12" tall cabinets at the reuse center and stuck 'em up there. They fit beautifully and will be stacked when I'm dong painting, etc. Again, with future beaded face frames, it'll be the entire 42" tall. I've heard people here say that under 9' ceilings the stacked cabinets look bad, or something. Can't remember what, but that was the gist of it. I think it looks great. I love the glass doors I found for the uppers, so to me it looks airy with the white cabinet insides showing. I am putting only scribe molding on the top because there isn't room for fancy molding. I don't mind, though. I'm very traditional but simple and clean. I'd ask him for a mock-up or where he's installed them before. Proportion does make a huge difference....See More10 foot ceilings-- 8 foot cabinets
Comments (10)My kitchen has 10' ceiling and 8' cabinets (the shorter cabinets are actually ~7.5', and the taller cabinets have tall crowns that make them taller than 8') My KD recommended that we not go with taller cabinets (I had mentioned taking them all the way to the ceiling) because it would have overwhelmed my particular space. We used a very large crown (1') throughout the ground floor of our house, so I carried it through into the kitchen. I'm happy with the look and don't regret not getting taller cabs :) I think the crown on the wall really helped balance the shorter cabs. Here's a picture of my last house. I don't remember the dimensions offhand, but the ceilings were definitely 10' and the cabinets ~8'. I did that kitchen on my own when we didn't have the budget for nice cabinets or a KD, and it shows. It's like the rough draft of my current kitchen, LOL....See MoreAbove fridge cabinet, 9 foot ceilings
Comments (13)We went all the way up with a cabinet and 9 foot ceilings but the stuff on that top shelf is hard to access, although GREAT storage for things that I only drag out on Christmas or BIG parties. I love the drawing. I guess it depends on if you have something you want to display up there. Open shelf, often means DUST though. I know that I am constantly dusting the open shelves in our kitchen where we have cookbooks. Here is a thought - do you want a TV in the kitchen, because when I first saw your drawing, it screamed flat screen TV at me! Seriously. Well, assuming its location is good for viewing from somewhere....See More9 ft Ceilings... Cabinets to Ceiling
Comments (28)In my old apartment we had 9 foot ceilings and single uppers that went all the way up--the top of the doors was maybe within 4 inches of the ceiling. The cabinets must have been nearly 5 feet tall. Yes, we used a step-stool to get at the stuff on the top shelves. We kept infrequently used things up there--the electric frying pan, some nice serving dishes that tended to only come out at holidays, things like that. I remember once reading guidelines about what the maximum cabinet height should be and ours were well beyond that. But we never had any issues, even though they were ancient (not sure if they were original to the 100-year-old house, but if they were installed after the 30's I would be very surprised), and had inset doors. Modern hinges should only improve the performance....See MoreUser
