10 foot ceilings-- 8 foot cabinets
Comments (10)My kitchen has 10' ceiling and 8' cabinets (the shorter cabinets are actually ~7.5', and the taller cabinets have tall crowns that make them taller than 8') My KD recommended that we not go with taller cabinets (I had mentioned taking them all the way to the ceiling) because it would have overwhelmed my particular space. We used a very large crown (1') throughout the ground floor of our house, so I carried it through into the kitchen. I'm happy with the look and don't regret not getting taller cabs :) I think the crown on the wall really helped balance the shorter cabs. Here's a picture of my last house. I don't remember the dimensions offhand, but the ceilings were definitely 10' and the cabinets ~8'. I did that kitchen on my own when we didn't have the budget for nice cabinets or a KD, and it shows. It's like the rough draft of my current kitchen, LOL....See More7 foot tall fridge, 8 foot ceilings
Comments (13)dang this new ipad. I can't figure out how to cut and paste pics from my photo bucket account here. I've had it for five mins so forgive me. I'll explain what I have and try to get a pic tomorrow (it's in photobucket igloochic lake house kitchen if you know how to search photo bucket). Anyhoo I had the same problem and I love our solution which was a fridge debth cabinet which is open in the front (just a 9" opening and then molding). In the back of the deep cab I keep trays and serving platters we only use for parties. But in front of those I have my yellow ware bowls and they are a lovely accent for the kitchen plus easy to reach since we have a kick stool in the kitchen. It's a very functional space....See Moreshaker cabinetry to 9 foot ceiling with crown molding or a space
Comments (12)When the cabinets are mounted with the top above the window height, you needn't worry about the projection of the crown interfering with the window molding. If they are lower, then yes, you need to account for the projection of the crown in the design. Crowding window molding is not a great look, either way. I try to go no closer than 3" to a molding, and some kitchens demand more negative space than that. What you run into with very tall cabinets is that it renders the kitchen off visually. I prefer transom cabinets that can break up that long vertical line visually. This is what 9' ceilings with 48"H transom cabinets (30+18 combo) looks like with a 6" cove molding. The cove really needs a riser to account for an out of level ceiling and to make up the tiny bit of difference between the molding height and overall height....See MoreCan I put a 5 foot tall window at counter height with 9 foot ceilings?
Comments (10)@Amy, building to PPF's drawing using an engineered header to carry the 2nd floor load will cost your builder more than slapping a couple of 2x12's above the windows and below the doubled top plate (I suspect that's where his 15.5" came from: 1/2" window RO gap, 11 1/4" for the 2x12, 3" for the doubled top plate - which is more like 14 3/4" but who's counting?). How much more? Maybe ~$100 for an 8' beam, but that's a SWAG without knowing anything about the loads from the 2nd floor and roof....See Moresarschlos_remodeler
