Hazy, hot, and humid....oh my!

I have lived in New England for 10+ years now, having grown up in Virginia, and I just cannot get used to not having central air conditioning! It seems so archaic to me! But, on the list of projects for this house, the kitchen is first - and it's taken me this long to get DH to come around to doing that!

Now, the cabinets are coming Monday and weather is supposed to be hot hot hot and humid!!! I'm worried that these cabinets are going to 'swell' with the moisture and heat and they'll put them in and then when the weather cools down, the cabs will contract and I'll be left with gaps. Anybody ever had this situation and was it a problem...please say no!

Just make sure you pull the cabinets into the air conditioned home at least 24 hours in advance before you install. They recommended we do this so that the cabinets acclimate to the temp and humidity inside the house where they will be hung.

Chrissie, I don't have AC, that's my concern. If they 'acclimate' to a very humid climate, will they contract when things dry out and leave me with gaps?

We are fortunate to live in a wonderful climate. If you are not a Californian, what socks12345 is referring to is the normal weather cycle we get in So. Cal. We call it the May Grey and June Gloom. During this period there is a bank of low level clouds that sits passively over the Pacific Ocean. At night when it cools off the bank rolls in over land. During May we might have a half a dozen days where the clouds do not burn off, but normally they burn off by about 10:00 AM. This is great for gardeners because the seedlings that are transplanted get about 4 hours of filtered light and 6-8 of full sun. this is very gentle on the seedlings but they grow at the same rate as full sun plants without too much heat stress. However, this year mother nature threw us a curve with 2 weeks of Santa Ana condition. This is when a high pressure cell over the desert (where it should be) pushes our beloved cloud bank out to sea and blasts us with powerful hot winds. I'm sure you've heard about the fires. so we got hit hard as I mentioned in my post above I had to water some plants twice a day. The hot air moving is a double whammy because it rapidly dries everything out, including mulch and soil moisture. hopefully this is a rare occurrence as the usual Santa Ana's come in late Sep. to Dec. Plants are well established by then. Do any other Prune Pickers out there have anything to add?

Sierra, I am so sorry that you are dealing with frost at this time of year. I just can not imagine such a short growing season. I hope things warm up and you have a nice long Indian summer! Cameron, I hope the bee sting is improving. My DH has been stung several times in the last few days. The darn things fly inside his shirt and then move from spot to spot stinging him repeatedly. Cortisone cream has helped him a lot. I have tried to catch up on housework this week while the temps have been so high. I'm good up to about 90 F. but anything over that makes me physically ill. We have two window air conditioners that do a decent job of keeping it bearable inside. DD2 and I were able to clean a large closet, sort out all of her clothes to make room for new school clothes, get the house in decent order and scrubbed a few walls and the floors. I'm terrible about letting the house go during summer so I can spend time outside. We still have her room upstairs to tackle when she gets home from her weekend with her dad. I have a good carload of goods to take to the community thrift shop next week and won't even feel bad about using the fuel to make two trips if it means we can get her room back under control by clearing out lots of excess STUFF! In the meantime the weeds I've been so diligent about keeping cut so they don't form seed are getting tall and setting seed anyway. Next time we mow we'll be forced to bag too. Sigh. We've had rain off and on for two days and it's been nice to not have the hot sun beating in the windows all the time. 11 days until DD2 starts High school. Lots to get done before then because I already know how crazy things will get around here then. Thankfully most of our harvest is done. Just one more cutting of hay to do. We still have to rebuild the calf lot fences but will wait until the weather breaks before we do that. PS to Eduarda...we did our branding and tagging two weeks ago and the #44 cow survived the cut one more year. Her yearling grandaughter almost got shipped out but has been given a one year reprieve to settle down. How did it turn out that my heifers are all decendants of that crazy old #44? beachlily, my stepdad had shingles and it was awful, there were days when even the collar on his shirt hurt him. I'm sorry that your hubs has this to deal with too. Hang in there, I'm sending prayers and hugs, as you know. Ruthanna, like you, I don't have air conditioning at all, and I cook outside on the deck sometimes. I should have an awning out there, but I don't. I do have an outside plug, so I put a crockpot out there, or my Nesco roaster or my small countertop "convection oven". I also have a camp stove, so I can make breakfast out there if it suits me and I have canned out there occasionally. I keep threatening to get one of those "screen houses" because the mosquitos here are awful, the people who keep track of such things say it's the worst year for mosquitos in a long time, that we're having the "perfect storm" of heat and wet for them. The bats and barn swallows are loving it, though. It got to be 92 here on Friday and 88 on Saturday, with humidity hovering in the high 80s. I decided to just ignore it and so on Saturday I mowed the lawn, finally cleaned and folded the pool cover, gave the outside trim on the house a coat of Kilz because we're painting the house, and then went inside and canned a batch of Habenero Gold. I figure if it's hot, it just is and a bit more doesn't make a difference. Yesterday I compensated by spending 7 hours in the garden, rototilling, raking and hoeing. There was a decent breeze and it only went up to 84F so it wasn't so bad, but it didn't cool down at night and Elery ended up sleeping on the couch in front of the open sliding door and with the fan blowing With both dogs. His house has air conditioning and so he's not used to it. Annie

I like American Freedom, and that's great that your get rebloom. I have its sibling, Minstrel Singer, which I think has a less vigorous plant habit than AF. It's similar in coloration and form and is supposed to rebloom, but never has for me. I think my favorite is Soli Deo Gloria, which I got from Laura this Spring and should bloom here in a few days. I'm glad to know Margo Reed Indeed did well for you, since so many on forun said theirs was short this year. Mine was short and only bloomed on two scapes. Boundless Beauty is a great one for the later season. I'm glad you and Kate agree. Your cream seedling is very pretty! I used to grow Dublin Elaine, and it always rebloomed for me. But it was on the side of the yard that became too shady for daylilies, and I sold it. I hope it's out there blooming away beautifully for its current owners. Debra

You might want to run some dehumidifiers in your house. We are building a new house and needed to acclimate the wood before the floors went down. Because of all the paint and drywall that had just been done, the house was very humid and the builder brought in several dehumidifiers to help with the problem.

I just turned our A/C on yesterday - we are in western PA and I don't know how you're surviving without A/C. Could you at least get a window unit? When we lived in our first house in New York state, I was pregnant and miserable in the heat and humidity and it was amazing what a difference that one A/C window unit made to the comfort level in the house.

Ditto bellsrus. In my first house, we were able to run window units in the living room and bedroom, and they were lifesavers.

Patti, I just spoke to my kitchen guy and he assured me it's not a problem, that they install in new construction with no AC all the time. He said it IS an issue with flooring, though.

We have AC units for all the bedroom windows and my DH will put them in today. It's not enough as far as I'm concerned. I work at home now and need to get a portable unit for my office or I'm going to die this summer!!

Cambro, if you think it's bad in New England, you should be in VA today. 98 is the projected temp with 105+ heat index. Next 3 days are supposed to be around 100 with the same awful humidity. Thank god for A/C!

antiquesilver, I grew up in Virginia - Fairfax County - where are you? My DH thinks nothing of the lack of AC - I think it's archaic and I wonder every year why I put up with it! But, by fall, all is forgotten.... So, here we go again. Meanwhile, today is cool and rainy and I'm freezing! I can't believe it's going to be 90+ for the next four days!

When we recover from the kitchen project, the AC might have to be the next one...although redoing bathrooms is up there...!!!

We're supposed to be getting your weather tomorrow and sunday. Right now it's 54 in Portland, Maine, and by this time tomorrow they're forecasting high 80's to low 90's.

Cambro, I'm in CT and definitely NOT looking forward to this predicted heatwave for 4 days. (How did I ever live in FLA?) Anyways, I think your cabinets should be OK, since aren't most pieces sealed/stained, etc? With a HW floor, the wood is "bare", so would be able to absorb much more moisture. I think your cabs will be fine.

I'm in Richmond & my husband is from McLean. I grew up without A/C (long ago after the earth's crust cooled) & don't remember it being that unbearable except for 5-6 days a year. I guess once you get used to it, you can never go back - I know I couldn't!

Deedee - you're right, my kitchen guy mentioned the wood is already kiln dried, etc., whatever that means, and that the pieces are larger whereas the wood is thin strips, etc.
