dimmer on kichler xenon undercabinets lights

these are line voltage, can u use a dimmer on them? the have a two position switch on the lights themselves but iprefer to use wall dimmer and leave them on high

Be sure to post on the lighting section, they have lots of good info over there. I don't know about xenon lighting, I have newly installed LED dimmable lights and I love them. Which ever under cabinet lighting is used the dimmable feature is so nice.

We just had these lights installed and our electrician put them on a dimmer switch.

I looked at many LED undercabinet lights, but the light quality is not as good as Xenon. I don't like the flat color rendition of LED and the cooler color temp. I ended up getting the stainless steel Kichler Xenon strip. The only benefit of LED, in my view, is the energy efficiency. But how long do you leave the undercabinet lights turned on every day? In our case, we don't turn it on that often so the energy savings would never pay for the extra cost. We are using LED on all of the other lights including the recessed room lights, because those will be turned on all the time.

Well, it really does depend on what you're looking for. Xenon's are brighter, give a warmer light and are dimmable. But, they're warmer. Meaning anything on the shelf above should not be heat sensitive. They use more power as well. LEDs are smaller, have no heat and generally are great under cabinet lights. If you need a very bright task light, most won't do the trick. Kichler has a great under cabinet LED for situations like these. And it has 4 light levels. Some LEDs are dimmable. So it really depends on what your need is. And yes, mount it up to the front.

davidro1, I'm not too familiar with lighting terms such as the lumen. But since it only produces 500 lumen vs 2000 lumen does it mean the lights I'm looking at will not be bright? Or what does that mean exactly? I think this is what we need for the kitchen. We were told we didn't need the light bar to extend to the full length of the cabinets. Is this true? 2 - 13" light bar with 2 lights (for under corner lazy susan and 24 inch cabinet. $66 each 2 - 26" light bar with 4 lights (for under 2 - 36" cabinets) $95 each 1 - 39" light bar with 6 lights (for under a span of two cabinets for a total of 52") $109 Also, should I use these same lights for above the cabinet or is the rope lighting a better option?

I ordered both puck lights and an undercab strip light from Pegasus. The strip light is actually 4 puck-sized lightbulbs in a fluorescent strip-looking fixture, with a diffuser so that you don't have pools of light. I ordered both because I wanted the puck lights for the kitchen; I have an adjacent family room cabinet and I originally thought the strip would be vastly different, but truthfully it isn't. About the only difference I can see is that you don't get pools of light. I think the pricing was about the same. FWIW, Pegasus was fine for ordering -- GW-recommended, no complaints here.

We just installed these lights. I had to get an electronic, low voltage dimmer. It was $90. The fact that it was electronic made it expensive.

Trinity_2010 - Xenon bulbs are low voltage. Your Kichler strips are line voltage because they have the transformer built into the strip that take the xenons from low voltage to line voltage. You will still need a low voltage dimmer, either a "magnetic low voltage dimmer" or an "electronic low voltage dimmer". Check with the Kichler installation instructions, or call the Kichler customer service phone number, to find out which low voltage dimmer your strips need.

While low voltage dimmers are more expensive than line voltage dimmers, you do not need to spend the $90 that Coffeebeantown quoted. We purchased two electronic low voltage dimmers for our Juno xenon strips (one dimmer for each side of the kitchen). Ours (the Leviton IllumaTech IPE04-1LZ) cost about $47 each. There's also the Lutron Skylark SELV-300P for about $45. Another choice is the Lutron Diva DVELV-300P which is a bit more at $60, but still not as high as the $90 mentioned previously. Lutron makes several other designs for low voltage dimmers, and you can spend more if you want, but you don't have to. Keep in mind the total cost of your kitchen re-do, and what percentage of that is the low voltage dimmer cost of $50 or so.

We have the Kichler linear lighting system (Xenon bulbs with holders that clamp onto a track/wire at chosen intervals). I don't recall what type of transformer we have, but I know it supports a dimmer switch. We used the Lutron Vareo (Architectural series) Dimmer & Switch.

We used the Nova T or Nova Switch for our ceiling fan, FWIW, and got a switchplate from Lutron with 4 openings sized for the Vareo and Nova switches.
