Just to prove how confused I am... another range placement option

We discussed a range in a peninsula and I'm now gathering opinions on a corner range. Here is another option. Have you ever seen a range under a kitchen window. If I put in a bay window, I would start the window counter height with the granite counter running behind the range. The burners wouldn't be right under the window.

Opinions please.

I would not want my range in front of a window. I would think your window would be difficult to keep clean. If the window opens that could be a safety issue, especially if it is a gas range.

I went through the same exercise a year ago and chose the 36" Wolf cooktop, a Wolf single oven with a Wolf convection/microwave on top. I have been using them for four months and am very satisfied. I chose the cooktop because (1) Wolf has a good reputation for quality and service, (2) I liked the layout of the burners, the placement of the knobs on top and the backlit indicators that a burner was on, and (3) the appearance of the grates which are very solid. I was also influenced by the fact that we are using propane and Wolf makes both an LP and a NG version, rather than having the system retrofit by an installer, which is true for some brands. I cook a fair amount but don't need all the burners to be high BTUs as they are on the range tops. I purchased a separate All Clad griddle which straddles two burners nicely. Previously I had cooked only on electric stoves. The one thing I notice with the cooktop is the need to be careful not to turn the burners too high or the flames come up the sides of the pot and cause scorching. It may be that the Thermador star design is better in this regard as the Wolf burners appear to heat the edges of the pot faster than the interior of the bottom. However, the simmer is fantastic. It never needs to be adjusted. The ovens were a more difficult choice for me. I went with the Wolf in large part because of appearance. My ovens are placed next to the Sub Zero fridge and everything matches nicely. The regular single convection oven is a good size. It bakes and roasts well; the broiler is nothing special. I have put three trays of cookies in at once and they all cooked perfectly. You do have to remove the racks for cleaning. Some GE ovens are attractive because the racks can stay in. I notice that there is much more spattering of grease in a convection oven than my older conventional one. Therefore I remove unused racks when roasting meat or poultry. The controls look complicated but are actually fairly intuitive once you go through them once. All in all an excellent choice but I am not sure the performance is any better than less expensive ovens. I was unsure about the convection microwave. It is, as Wolf readily acknowledges, a Sharp or Panasonic product with an expensive trim kit. The exterior is black plastic and not up to the standard of the regular oven. However, the microwave works well. It has about 100 watts less power than a regular microwave but that does not seem to make a huge difference. I was surprised that I use the small convection oven as much as I do. I use it for warming bread or leftovers and cooking small pieces of fish or chicken. It heats up quickly and is probably much more energy efficient than using the large oven for these tasks. It worked well for baking a single pie crust but I use the larger oven for cakes. I also use the convection oven for warming plates or holding side dishes as I did not get a warming drawer. Hope this helps. Wolf was a good choice for me but I am sure there are other options.

I have a viking 30 inch vdsc that has been installed for about a year and a half and am happy with it. I chose this range because I wanted a black range and I wanted dual fuel, we have to use a lp tank and did not want to have both the range top and oven dependent on the tank. I am a cook-something-quick-and-easy-that-my-picky-kids-and-picky-husband-will-eat-5-days-a-week cook so did not need a super high powered cook top, I almost never go above med-high. I do use the simmer a lot and it is not the best so I bought a simmer plate to help get an evenly low cooking surface. The burners are closed and have been very easy to clean but I have not had any overflows or cooking mishaps that would get anywhere near that part of the burners. The black, shiny surface that is below the grates of the viking does show every little bit of dirt and I do clean it frequently using soap and water and a dry rag to buff out water streaks. The oven seems to take a bit longer to preheat than my old stove and because it uses the broiler to help preheat you cannot stick items in before the preheat is done or you will burn the tops (I still sometimes put items in early but keep them on the bottom rack.) The oven also cooks a little differently than I am used to, cannot really explain how or why but it does leave most items moister which is nice. If you have concerns with how a viking cooks I would recommend finding a dealer that offers demonstrations, the dealer I bought from had demos all of the time.

With respect to the duct diameter: There have been rules for commercial kitchen ventilation ducts that attempt to minimize the amount of grease that condenses on the duct walls (a bigger problem for commercial kitchens than residential kitchens, but still relevant). The goal was an air velocity of 1500 ft/minute, as I recall. Commercial systems typically run at one speed, so this would correspond to full power. More recent study suggests that higher speeds are better for warm ducts, and lower for cold ducts to reduce duct wall impingement due to turbulence. In any case, the flow rate (CFM) divided by the duct cross-sectional area (sq. ft.) yields velocity in ft/min. What will the flow rate be, he asked? Well, we might guess that a 600 cfm rated blower having to pull/push air through a duct at 1000 ft/min and through hood transitions, the silencer, and the baffles, against some (hopefully small but unlikely to be zero) house negative pressure, will only move an amount well under 600 cfm. One would need a fan curve to calculate net flow rate, assuming that one knew all the losses including the baffle loss as a function of flow. Lacking that, I would assume maybe 450 cfm max, given a screened open window equivalent for the MUA, and that the duct is fairly short. 450 cfm in an 8-inch duct (0.4 sq. ft.) is 1125 ft/min -- a good value for the desired span of flow velocities. I wouldn't use a 10-inch duct unless there were a near-term intent to upgrade the range and the hood to a larger size. You can fit an 8-inch silencer more easily into the six feet of duct length that you have. With respect to in-line vs. roof blowers: In this case where there is not a lot of duct length to play with, the possible need for offsets to get the blower away from the edge of the roof, and given the weight of an in-line blower that would have to be supported somehow in the duct length, and maybe some day repaired, I would tend to prefer a roof blower, unless there were some overarching reason for not mounting on the roof. kas

Oh, sorry, when Mozilla changed Firefox's user interface (UI) to what's called "Australis" I wasn't too happy about it and installed an extension - Classic Theme Restorer - that returns it to it's previous layout. I get so used to it I've forgotten I've done it. But with the default Austalis UI, you get to Options by a different path. By default now, I think you click on what's known as the "hamburger" - a little icon at the top right made up of three little horizontal lines. When you click on that, you should see "Options" or "Preferences" I believe. See if that works.

I have not read your corner range thead, so this may not be applicable to your situation. I will have a 36'' induction cooktop rather than a range. The wall is just over 88'' long. The cooktop is centered on the wall. A 60''x 36'' double casement window is centered on the wall. The countertop is 27'' and the cooktop 20'', which leaves 4-5 inches between the back of the cooktop and the window.

The glass is spec'd as 'clear view', which when warmed by the sun (or the cooktop) causes the dirt/grease to sheet off down the window. A good hood should also decrease the grease that collects on the window.

I agree about the code issue. You may be able to do it with a fixed window that does not open. I have seen this application.

There are two reasons why this became a code issue: when gas ranges had pilot lights an open window could cause the pilot to go out.

The other is the tendency to want to put window treatments on a window.

Great advice. Thank you so much. I really appreciate the link to the photos and the past thread. I would forego a Window treatment but I didn't think that local codes may be an issue. I'm guessing the contractor will know that but I will definitely ask if I should be calling Town Hall.
There is a deck right outside where the bay window would be. Cleaning the glass would be easier from the outside. We also did discuss a picture window for the center of the bay so that is definitely an option.

Cotehele, thanks for your dimentions and suggestions. I drew out your plan and mine is similar. My wall is a little over 10 feet wide and the window we are considering is 8 feet wide. I am thinking of a bay window that would start at counter height. The granite countertop would cover the ledge of the window so that will add a few inches between the back of the range and the glass.
Please tell me about "clear view" glass. I will try to find out more about it. Does Anderson windows have that option?

The windows are Kolbe & Kolbe. The factory rep was at the construction meeting Thursday with the architect and GC. He told us the coating on the inside between the two sheets of glass (titanium, I believe) worked especially well and was often spec'd on commercial windows. I cannot find it on their website. The cost of the coating was extremely low.

I'll glad to share the cabinetmaker's plans. They will give more specific measurements. Everyone has been so generous and helpful with our design, I am thrilled to pass it on. Our window is at countertop level. Rather than using the countertop for the sill, the GC recommended using the same design Ericka used. The window has a sill and the counter is about 1/4'' below the sill. I am hoping to replace my IKEA bb counter (1 1/2'') with soapstone (1 1/4'') at some point. The difference in counter height will not be a problem. If the counter was the sill, it would be much more difficult. Not because the counter couldn't become the sill, but because the front edge would be 1/4'' higher than the cabinets. It would need some kind of trim or special front edge to compensate. I like the look of Ericka's windows and marble counters very much!

The renderings are done with my PC software, and have been tweaked just a bit since these. It will give you some idea of how the windows fit behind the cooktop.
