construction was speeding along swimmingly until we hit a speedbump at a high rate of speed!

issue: cabinetmaker sent out doors for priming and the finisher he used screwed up the job royally. to the point i have been told by two consulting paint reps the doors need to be re-fabricated, they cannot be salvaged. compounding it, inexplicably i have learned the cab maker mixed species in the door construction (they were supposed to be maple but he used cherry too) and the cherry began leeching tannins, also damaging the priming job. so now having to deal with cabinetmaker while kitchen construction has come to a screeching halt. room is ready - hardwood floors are in and dry, could start installing cabs any day now..... tick tock...

will see what happens. things were going so well, was hoping to avoid major project issues. ah well, i guess i am now offically initiated!

I don't think this is a club that most of us want to join. Sorry for your troubles!

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And, I've needed many pounds of cure over my gardening "career". First problem was trying to seed this time of year in zone 6. Its hard to get cool season grasses to establish when seeding in the spring, especially fairly late (guessing as to your exact whereabout). Although, sometimes you just have to do what you can, like if you just bought the house or just got it built. Follow Dchall's advice. Then this fall read all you can on this forum about when and how to do overseeding and I think you will have much happier results with fall seeding results. It will generally provide a much better payoff on "reward" versus the amount of effort put in. And, like Dchall says, don't let the one set back get you too down. Lawns will do that to you. Oh, and if you want to try to save much of whatever grass you do have come up from the spring seeding, absent alot of rain you will need to water heavily in the hot months. The roots just aren't going to be established enough to keep it going.

Feeders: Put the feeders out of reach of mice. Cats are better jumpers. You may have squirrel issues, but it will take the squirrels a while to find the food dishes. Anything a cat can get to, so can a squirrel. But the cats will eat squirrels too. Water: This is tougher in winter. We use a heated water bowl for our 3 dogs in winter, and it takes them about a week to empty it, but two of my dogs prefer crunching on icicles to drinking water when ice is available. For cats it would last at least a month. Get a neighbor to refill it. Available at Peavey Mart for about 50 bucks. Shelter: If you have an outbuilding, build a cat shelter with 6 or 8 straw bales. 3 in a U, two on top, one in front but with enough space. You may need to make it coyote resistant. A sheet of styrofoam underneath will insulate them from ground chill. Cat alternatives: 1. Bait stations. Best way to make these are T's of sink drain pipe. Fasten upside down. Drop the bait down the center of the t. Warfarin/coumadin based baits can hurt cats and dogs that eat the dead mice. Most of these baits have added sugar to make them more attractive to mice. Makes them more attractive to cats and dogs too. Mice will haul food back to their nest, then die. Dogs will discover the next and eat remaining bait. Best answer to this is to use liquid baits in the appropriate bait station. Another answer is to use zinc phosphide baits. These won't harm critters that eat the poisoned mice, but you still have the problem of the wrong animal getting the bait. Trapping. Lots of bucket trap plans on the Internet. A thorough trapping program in the fall will cut the mouse population. Resume in spring.

UPDATE: Its been over two years since we first got the tub. The tub it self has been great! i have not had any issues with the functionality (no technical issues). we have the blower blow in maintence mode and turns on every day for a few mins. This doesnt clean the "jets" and we occasionally get small black pieces when we run the pumps. we need to run bleach through the system regulary to address this. The only othr issue is the waterfall is a waste! The motor is noisy and kills the sound of the running water. Overall - we are very happy with this tub and have had no technical issues since we bought it two years ago.

UPDATE: So I received an answer from the owner of the store who is hanging with the manufacturer in the USA right now. He brought the furniture back to the builder and discussed the issues I had with it. He explained his policy as this is custom ordered, not just taken from a shelf. They have never sold this set as painted before, they cannot give a refund until they try to solve the issues with the product. The painter was different from the builder and had the builder seen it it wouldn't have passed inspection. So the owner and manufacturer are proposing that when the owner goes down to the US again at the end of October, he will bring back beautiful furniture that is painted by the manufacturer who has experience painting kitchen cabs and will be inspected by the owner of the manufacture company. Then before it is delivered to our house, we will go to the store to inspect it. So they have my 4K and I'm not getting furniture for another 2 months. So now what? It's not just the finishing, cross bars were cracked and the backs were hacked (as per the pics!). It sounds like they will fix the cosmetic stuff, but I don't know. I just have such a bad taste in my mouth about this whole thing now. The owner of the local store says he is in the US and doesn't get internet most of the time, so I can contact him next week. Do you think I have enough to open a formal dispute with the cc company, or because they are trying to fix it I'm stuck with it? THANK you for all your advice and wisdom!

Welcome to the club... at least there is lots of support here! Can't understand the mixing of species for painted doors --- cherry can be so expensive to use.

How is the cab maker responding to the issue?

So sorry to hear but take heart that this will in the long run be fixed-- it was caught in time, it can and will be addressed. Nonetheless, sorry for the delay and the irritation and frustration -- I know what that's like!

How awful! Can they install the cab boxes now so construction can proceed and then put the new doors on later, or are the frames needing to be replaced too?

thanks all for your replies. update: cabinetmaker and i have decided to part ways, we are now defining what divorce will look like. now need to work with my GC who will be picking up the pieces from the cabinetmaker. just the doors and drawer faces need to be replaced, not all the cabs. oiy!

for the folks that ever debate working without an agreement - DON'T DO IT! thank god i have something in writing. it is not a detailed contract, could have been much better but it has been invaluable in this process. also MAKE SURE TO HOLD BACK PAYMENTS! thankfully he has enough skin in the game still he has to deal with me to come to a quasi satisfactory agreement for all. and do not underestimate the power of yelp. clearly vendors keep that in mind and are fearful of a bad review. i have never reviewed anyone in yelp but have heard several times now of businesses recognition of the power of yelp.
