Anyone use filler to close the gap around refrigerator cabinet?

Refrigerator Clearance (gap between the side wall)
Comments (23)I just measured the distances with my fridge and wall. The fridge, including the doors, is 32" deep, plus it sits about 2" away from the back wall. The wall to the left is 30" deep. The fridge, including the space away from back wall, sticks out 4" farther than the wall. There is about 3/4" space b/w the wall and the fridge. Here are some pictures that I hope will help you to understand what I was explaining above. First is the fridge closed up against the wall. The white doors go to the pantry. I can pop the door inward if I need to open my fridge door as far as it goes, but I have never needed to. I couldn't get a good shot that would show how far the fridge sticks out compared to the wall next to it, but you can go by the measurements above. This is a picture of the drawer open until it hits the pantry door, which is closed in this picture. Even though it looks funny, I have no problem getting food out from this side of the fridge. On rare occasion, if I need to, I just open the other fridge door to give me more room. Here is a picture of the left door partially open (until it hits pantry door which is closed) w/fruit bin open. The drawer opens 7.5" with the left door not opened all the way. It doesn't look as if it's open that much, but it is! And here is the fruit bin with the fridge door open as far as it is meant to open (pantry door popped inward to allow for this). The bin only opens an extra 1.5" so it's really not the big of a deal. 7.5" gives me plenty of room to get out what I need. Oh my, just noticed the nice handprint from one of my kids on the door in the picture above! :) And here is a picture of the Cool Select Drawer open - it is unimpeded by the fridge doors and opens all the way regardless of whether or not I have the fridge doors open partially or all the way. This is with the doors partially open. Can you tell we eat alot of cheese?? And just to compare, here is the Cool Select Drawer open with both doors open as far as they can go - no difference! Hope this helps. Sorry I couldn't get a better picture of where the wall ends compared to how much further the fridge sticks out but I couldn't get a good vantage point to take that angle. Comments (16)Thanks to all who have responded. I was unable to get back to my computer since I posted so I will reply to all questions / suggestions in this response. Here goes: To weedmeister: tile goes down lastâ¦after the cabinets are in. As you will (or already have read), many of the pro installers will install plywood or some suitable material over the Hardie board to bring the cabinet install up to finished floor height. To monkeymo: You are correct. The solution is to use a stacked molding. My KD did not provide a crown diagram (she had to leave town on family business right after we ordered cabinets). When we met with our âÂÂnewâ KD yesterday to address this issue, she provided the crown diagram which showed the stacked molding. Our order did include the Single Bead Molding which is attached to blocking. As âÂÂlive wire oakâ remarked, the crown is installed on top of the SBM. Nonetheless, the crown that was ordered would still not have reached the ceiling. By ordering the Large Crown Molding (LCM8) we will get the necessary height. To live wire oak: You are correct: this is my first kitchen install and it has been very challengingâ¦and will likely continue to be. However, I will get it done and it will look great! And, yes, had I been aware of the stacked molding that was intended to be used, that would have covered one base. The crown originally ordered has a vertical height of 1 15/16; the LCM8 that we will be ordering to replace it has a vertical height of 2 13/16 so all will be fine. Several installers, including the one that works with HD to install cabinets, have told me that installing the cabinet bases on the Hardie board is perfectly OK. I know where they live so IâÂÂm sure they werenâÂÂt setting me up. :-) To lisa1 517: Thanks for your suggestion. You, too, are right on the money. Stacked it is! To kitchenkrazed09: All I can tell you is that my cabinet, including the base, is 93â tall. Kraftmaid calls it an OC302493. The base is 4 ýâ and the cabinet is 88 1/2â (the front of the cabinet âÂÂoverlapsâ the base by ýâ so it appears to be 89 (does that count for 90âÂÂ? ;-) ). To Buehl: Thanks for your picture. The link I posted and referred to in my post is of the same picture. Not trying to be a smart a**, I just didnâÂÂt want that look with painted cabinets. Comments (60)I deleted my comment, toyed around with it in IKEA's website and realized that if I moved the stove to the fridge wall I'd have to get rid of my lower cabinet and add 2 12's.... Not nearly as functional. There would be a plus to being able to see into the living room, but the negative is that I would always be in the way when I'm cooking. Our fridge can't go into the corner because of our heater, even beside the window is out because of that. I think I'm just going to be stuck with some filler pieces. At the end of the day, it'll be 1000x more functional than it is now. I do think that I'm going to move the microwave beside the fridge, and put a nice hood over my range. Will just have to adjust the height of my cabinets on the basement wall. ETA: Weird question... if I use 20 inch cabinets above the microwave, can I line up the bottom of that cabinet with the bottom of the fridge cabinet and have them at different heights? Although not integrated, I had the similar dilemma even though I selected the refrigerators, ordered a trim kit, designed the cabinets, despite, due to the cabinet manufacturer limitation, had to opt for shorter top cabinets resulting in a 2” gap above the top trim and about 3/4” gap on both sides; I felt I’d figure it out later. At additional and significant cost, I ordered several pieces of 3”x3/4”x96” cabinet trim; I completed the trim around the trim job last weekend. Looks perfect and original. Took me a few months to get around to doing it but unpacked my miter saw and a bunch of other tools last week and got the job done. Feel proud knowing I have not lost my woodworking skills.
