I don't know what type of modifications you need, but my understanding is that now that they have combined the three lines, some of the customization is a little different. If for instance, you need a 31 inch cabinet, they just order a 33 inch cabinet and cut it down to the size needed. I believe that you just pay for the 33 inch cabinet and there shouldn't be a large "upcharge" for the custom size. However, each showroom/designer might handle this differently. I was also able to keep my costs down because I wanted a very simple door and drawer style. My drawer bases with slab fronts were cheaper than a traditional two door cabinet with roll out shelves. Sometimes with making slight changes in the door styles, stain, paint and glaze options, the cost can be significantly reduced. Also, if you haven't already, I would post a kitchen plan on the forum for all of the experts here to look at. I was too shy to do this, but I have seen the suggestions that have been made in the past and am amazed at the options that folks here have offered to pack a lot of functionality into a space, while using standard cabinet dimensions and options. I have been also doing a comparison lately but my cost estimate is coming in about twice as much for the rockglen as the kraftmaid. In my case I'm looking at inset doors to match the style of my 1927 kitchen which seems to make a big difference in the cost. In your case, for that little cost difference I'd definitely go with the Rockglen. From what I've heard Kraftmaid is good but Wood Harbor is better quality. I'd appreciate any input on my decision also!

We went the custom route in our kitchen and we have NO regrets. We were able to talk it through with our guy and create the size WE needed, depths of the cabinets not standard because he could do what we want. As to the finish, ours used a clearcoat conversion finish, which as I understand is the industry standard. He buys his doors and drawer fronts from a mill that only sells to contractors and they are excellent quality. We were working with red birch and my husband had certain things he did not want in the grain pattern, so our contractor gave the mill his requirements and told them he'd send any doors back that didn't meet the criteria. Will Kraftmaid do that for you? I would suggest you look at my link to my nearly finished kitchen to see pix of most of the following: 1. microwave wall entirely custom 2. See the deep drawer with the Dutch oven and large metal strainer/bowl? It is 23" long. I had the space and didn't want to waste it. 2. All top drawers are a 5" deep box because I hate super shallow ones. 3. I have a split front drawer for my silverware, the top part being a separate cutting board. (Most places have a cutting board that can't be opened solo. It's nested inside the drawer). And that couldn't have been done with a typical drawer box either. Moneywise, I didn't like the entry-level stove anyway, so we kept our old one. When the time comes, hopefully I will have rebounded from the kitchen costs and buy a better one than the entry-level models. Had we been short another $1200, we would have held off on buying the fridge and stayed with our contractor. Another money question: How does Kraftmaid handle change-orders and the pricing for that? I realized after our cabinets came that one of them was not what I'd expected at all. It was my fault, really. So we decided to do a change order and eat the cost. Our cabinetmaker wanted us to be happy and went above and beyond in getting the change done and being beyond fair in what he charged us for it. Kompy, My experience was at Lowe's....Perhaps it is not the same everywhere. I just double checked my quotes just to make sure I was not mistaken. I had the exact same order priced out in 3 different door styles (all the KD did was change the door style in the computer). I did the Provence door/$169 per lin ft, Kensington/$181 per lin ft, and Carrington/$240 per lin ft. Here are some examples of the differences in price.... Crown molding with mounting strip: $486, $516, $504 Wood toe kick: $55, $59, $57 Refrigerator Wall Panel: $147, $156, $152 Wood skin for the back of peninsula: $239, $254, $248 Even the cushion close drawer glide system (which I think might now be standard?) had different prices: $$595, $686, $668 Oddly enough, the trim pieces for the most expensive door (Carrington) were cheaper than the second most expensive door (Kensington). So, that was when I decided to take a Tylenol and put away the spreadsheet. As you can see, they were not huge differences, but it still struck me as odd that things like toe kicks and skins would have different prices bc they are all made the same regardless of the door style. In the end, we purchased based on the door style we liked, which was a Home Depot exclusive, and we negotiated with them until we got to a price we thought was fair based on our comparable pricing of Kraftmaid and Merillat cabinets. Again, this was just my experience so I just put it out there for what it's worth.
