pendant or flush mount light in galley kitchen?

we have a 15x10 galley kitchen with canned lighting on the perimeter of our countertops and are looking to add two ceiling light fixtures. we're leaning schoolhouse style but aren't sure whether to make them flush mount or pendants?

does it look odd to have two flush mount lights in one room? does it look odd to have pendants not hanging over an island even if the pendants aren't the open-faced ones directing light downward?

If you have canned lights, it probably provides enough light and the pendant is largely decorative/supplementary?

I have an 18' galley kitchen leading into a breakfast room. Most of my light comes from under counter and tophats, but i also have one small chandelier.

I would only hang one, or, if you really want more, hang 3.

Our galley is under construction right now. I think the measurements are something like 19' x 10'. You would not believe the number of flushmounts we are having. Well, there are no can lights, so maybe you would believe it. Twelve. And then there are more on the other side of a beam but if I counted those, the number would frighten you.

In our last kitchen I had five flushmounts. Below is a link to a pic of two.

We're putting three pendant lights down the center of our galley kitchen. How high should these pendant lights be from the floor (or how long should they be hanging down from the ceiling)? Our ceilings will be approximately 9 feet tall, and the lights will hang down the middle of the kitchen, not over an island or anything. What length should I be looking for? Thanks! K

Here's what I came up with: Current house has island light at 5'9", out of most peoples eye-line. Pendants for new house would come down to about 5 feet if I used the provided hardware. Would block the veiw of the range and be very in your face. The top and bottom fittings screw off, the threaded bits stay in the rod. But I'm going to take a fitting to the electric supply store, buy some correct sized hollow threaded connectors [the wire feeds through the center], and solder or glue the connectors into copper or steel pipes of whatever length I like. I can then paint or patina the pipes, thread the wire and assemble as usual. Should be realitively simple and cheap, and will let me use the fixtures I like without worrying about hanging height.

Seeking advice on kitchen island pendant lighting

I am doing a kitchen remodel which will increase our kitchen size (going from galley style to a U-shape with an island. Proposed layout from the cabinet builder is attached (I penciled in the bar top and I put circles where the cans approximately will fall). The island is sized to be 64" x 83" -- a prep sink in one corner and seating (15" knee spacing) on opposite sides of the sink. This puts the bar top off center of the bases. My wife has a preference of a particular 6" pendant. My questions are: 1) Do I install 2 or 3 pendants? (two looks too far apart for the 6" pendants -- three looks too close together at times to me) 2) Do I put the pendants on center of the bar top or on center of the base? Center of the base will put the pendants on the kitchen/food prep side, but I worry about symmetry. Your thoughts and recommendations are appreciated! If you need additional information or have thoughts outside of the two questions, I would appreciate them! Thank you!

How high are your ceilings? If you're doing lights where people are standing, you'd want the bottom of them to be at least 7' from the floor. If you have 8' ceilings, that leaves only 12" for the fixture, which is not a lot of room for a pendant. Flush mounts might be a better option if that's the case.

I have no problem with two, I think it depends on what you choose, how big it is, and how much "punch" it has. We're putting two drum shades in our LR, one seemed silly, plus wasn't in a good spot for seating, and needed to be HUGE to look at the right scale, and three was just too many. That room is 18.5' long.
