Awesome day today - Counters came early! Marble & Quartzstone pix

Well today was just about the greatest day ever! My wonderful and (painfully meticulous) woodworker/cabinet makers finally finished to the point of doors... AND the counters were installed! Fun!!!

Here are some pics!

I got crazy lucky and was given a great piece of Statuary marble for my island, then struck gold again when my GC went to the fabricators looking for something to go on the wet bar and found a remnant that matched the island marble exactly and was big enough by only inches! so lucky! I would have been happy with any white marble or even some white caesarstone.

The perimeters are done in a Qortstone Cemento (like Caesarstone Concrete but a shade lighter)

So anyway - here's some pics of the days progress!

wow wow wow!!! Congrats, and it's insanely gorgeous! I really do love that close up picture of the marble over the plywood base, because it's informative as well as eye-candy. always good to see how different contractors do it.

Thank you all for your heartwarming words about Ruffin and the enormous milestone he reached today. My two angels are in bed (I also have a 3.5 year-old) and as I think about today, a date I'll remember forever (or until my brain gives out!), I just feel incredible warm fuzzies about his standing unaided and that step. The marble slabs / house remodel? Don't care. Doesn't matter. My sweet little button standing? I'm on top of the world!!! And you all totally understand. Thank you!!! Thank you, louisianapurchase, for telling me about your children and the work you did with your older son to help him overcome his fine motor issues. I just love hearing stories like yours -- I love hearing that children can and do get better. And thank you for writing that St. John (my older son) reminds you of your younger son! That's a nice compliment. mnhockeymom, holy cow that is remarkable about your son! Honestly, these medical professionals can scare the living daylights out of you (at least they have me with their earlier [mis]diagnoses of Ruffin) and to have heard the word "fatal" about one of your babies must have been incredibly frightening. I am so grateful your son is fine, healthy and "normal" for his age. When it comes to the health and welfare of our children, the world is a small place for people who care about children. I feel like holding hands with all the involved parents and singing "Kumbaya." I know it sounds goofy, but I just feel so connected to the other loving, concerned caregivers out there. I'm excited your countertops still give you a thrill -- since I am following your lead that'll hopefully be me later this year! katmandu -- I just have to tell you how much I like you! I'm so glad you joined GW. You wrote exactly what I'm feeling -- that Ruffin's steps are really all which matter to me. The countertops will be nice and the way this all happened (the rude lady, the "switched" slabs) was wrong, but keeping it in perspective, doesn't matter! Thank you, too, for telling me about when your children started walking. It is really helpful to my psyche to know that "normal" children (without delays / special needs) can and do start walking throughout their second year of life. Now about the marble: do keep it in mind when it's your turn. If it hadn't been for GWers who'd written out what to do for slab countertops (taking photos of your slabs as you pick them, being there when the templates are made, insisting on being there for the templates to be applied to the slabs and taking more pictures) I wouldn't have had the "proof" to both show others I was right as well as assuage myself! If I had to do it again you can bet I'd say to the first guy (with whom Ruffin and I selected our slabs): "Are you absolutely sure THESE are the slabs I'm going to get? Because THESE are the only slabs I want!" and then I'd check the claim tickets and make sure the numbers there matched up with the slabs I want. vwhippiechick -- reading your note brought (more) tears to my eyes! Bless you for all the incredible good you've given people. You truly are a miracle worker. I love (and I really mean "love" with my heart, not just a throw-away euphemism) all of Ruffin's therapists (physical, occupational and speech): these women, on a weekly basis, are vastly improving the quality of all of our lives (Ruffin's, mine, my older son's and my husband). You really are a miracle worker! You are 100% right -- marble? My little boy is improving!!! Your families are lucky to have you. Mindi -- you are so sweet. Thank you for your supportive words and advice. I loved reading your note, and a fine man like your son is exactly what this world needs! I've finally been able to get back to the message boards. Gosh it is annoying when real life gets in the way of my computer time! LOL. Wow, I love all the stories of how you approached your granite selection. Happenstance has certainly played a roll in many of the final selections. I recognize many of the granite names of the light granites as ones I have been looking to check out. BTW pbrisjar: I happened to come across the Azul Macaubas and you are right it is beautiful. That is one stone that could definitely make me veer from the white, and as mentioned by gglks I think it could still fulfill my vison, however I won't even hazard a guess as to the price of it, so it is not an option. Costa Esmerelda is also a gorgeous stone. All the choices are beautiful, and I love hearing how you came to have them. I'll be heading out next Wednesday to hit the yards (locals don't have what I want)and hopefully will be able to tag my slabs in this single trip as I'm 2 1/2 hours away (not to mention I hate driving into the city). bluekitobsessed: only 23,542 yards huh? And here I am hoping to do it with 3! I have a list of possibilities which might speed up the process a bit. Has anyone come across Siberian White, Polar White, and Bianco Primavera or Alabama White. I realize that some may be names given by the local yard as the last 2 I've never come across except for 1 site, and that was in the US. Thank you Mairin I agree with your sage advice. I'll go with my gut and if I don't feel the tug to tag it right there and then it likely isn't yet "The One!". mom2reese: Your kitchen is fabulous. All aspects of it are exceptional and your crown molding is very similar to what I want. May I show your photo to my cabinet guy. The molding he showed me is too curvy for my tastes and not really what I wanted for my shaker style cabinets. I was going to just go with his recommendation but after seeing yours I realize that I need to speak up or I likely will regret it. I feel if he can see an example of what's in my head then he will be able to come up with one that will be in scale for my much smaller kitchen. Thanks everyone.

Oh, see my plumber screwed up my eco toilets. I told him they have a strict 12" rough in and he calls my contractor telling him that I got these crazy wall mounted toilets (??). Umm, no. They have a strict 12" rough in that makes the tank, etc. flush with the wall. So no, you cannot run the water line directly behind the toilet. So Genius Plumber, instead of reading the Kohler install guide, just takes the template and jacks it 3" off the wall so that I can "reach back there for the water line." Umm, and how am I supposed to clean a 2.5" space behind the toilet? The waterline is supposed to be fed through a port on the side of the toilet with a fancy little stainless hole cover. Which the plumber then THREW OUT because he didn't know what it did. So now my toilets are all sicking out of their carefully designed hidey-holes and my marble floors are all drilled. And best of all, my water saving eco toilets run constantly because Genius Plumber had never installed dual flush toilets, so I have to keep the lids off until I want to use one. I swear I'm not sure if it's good or bad to know more than these jokers do. I think I would be more accepting if I were stupider. Herding cats. Seriously. And after all the problems he had at my place, I can't believe my contractor is going to use him on a bathroom designed by a husband and wife architect team that have never heard the term "standard plumbing fixture."

Wow your countertops are exquisite! I thought maybe bamboo granite, but it's quartzsite? I need to learn more about quartzite! Jon, can you please tell me where you purchased your stone? I love green and I love that stone! For your blacksplash. I wish I had a specific product to recommend, but I don't. However I do agree with the others that the tumbled and honed stones don't fit. I think that product is too matte. With your rich cabs, gorgeous countertops and stainless appliances you need something with a little light reflecting sheen. A crackle ceramic subway was the first thing I thought of too or maybe glass, but sandwiched between 2 strong elements I'd keep it simple. I'm not against a light neutral color that's pulled from your countertop, but not sure what. Have patience and take your time because your choices should become more apparent once the countertops and stained cabs are all installed. That countertop is the star and I can't wait to see your finished kitchen!

#1 - really beautiful...so many wonderful things to look at. I love your island, the window over the sink, the pantry, the floor...

#2 - in your kitchen plan, how are you going to keep Marley from "walking on the counter?" My granite wasn't in 24 hours before the peninsula became my kitty's absolute favorite place to lounge!! Just curious...

Im still just smiling from ear to ear when i bop by the kitchen! (on my way to the messy-horrible-unorganized mudroom to make coffee!)

SusieQ - you totally made me laugh - because as you know Marley's still an "untrained" kitten and i just have to "teach" him about the counters Bwahahahah. ;o)
At least he matches the decor...funny, our dog matches the floor!

And MDBmom, sorry but that table hasn't got a name.. it was a custom made table that i found in a high end boutique (way on sale) but i had been looking at a very similar one at RH - cant remember what they called either though. sorry.

More doors installing and hardware today - backsplash in a few days...I may have to hover and hand the tile guy tile by tile since im such a control freak!!! :o)

Those are some seriously luscious counters! You must be thrilled - if you're not, I am for you!!! Looking forward to see your completion, it looks like we have some similar tastes and choices going on. Would love to compare notes on how your stainless apron is holding up, how often we have to clean the stainless venthood and I'm curious what stools you'll choose for your contrasting island! I'm totally lost!

EEKK! It's gorgeous!!!! Just like I pictured it from your drawings. You know I'm drooling over your island and legs. NO way that's a lot of pictures...can never have too many IMO. I'm so happy for you, what a great day. The gray on your island and bar is amazing, I keep scrolling up to look at it again. Thanks for sharing.

That wet bar counter was a remnant?! I hope you bought a lotto ticket that day because your luck was running high! Seriously, your kitchen has so many wonderful and beautiful touches and looks like it will be very functional too. I am SO digging the sink window and the paneling around it. I'm sure this is going to be an inspiration kitchen for many others.

My legs didnt turn nearly as beautiful as yours, but i have a "small" kitchen and narrow island. ;o)
I want white leather stools, but we'll see what i end up with.

Chicagoans... I know right!?... i didnt even see the remnant until it was installed!
so you can imagine my surprise - i think it's better than the island slab.

My gosh that's so funny - it'd been so long since I've had a chance to poke around (due to the mommy part of my handle!) that I'd forgotten! I'm LOVING your kitchen! What's really funny is that I haven't posted pictures of my wetbar, and it looks like we went the same direction there too! My sinks a bit different, but the marble, the uppers... you'll see eventually.

We're actually moving in next month - I haven't posted finished pics because they're still using my island as a workbench. When do you get to use your kitchen?
