Child Proofing a Range Top

Hello All,

I have 3 boys under the age of 5. I already ordered a 36" GE Monogram Range Top -- I am desperately trying to find a way to child proof it! Does anyone know if there are knob covers for large knobs like these? My kids are mini houdinis -- nothing will stop them from a challenge :)

Have you checked kid stores like onestepahead.com?

You can probably pluck off the knobs when you're not cooking. (So can they!)

I suspect the knobs will be too tricky to do much with for kids too young to understand "no", though. It takes some of us adults MONTHS to get the hang of them! =)

Our DCS range knobs require the user to push them in before they can be turned. I believe the GE Monogram rangetop is made by DCS, so there's a good chance yours will work the same way. Little kids won't be able to figure this out (unless someone shows them!). A rangetop is still safer than a conventional electric top where the kiddos can't see that an element is really hot.

This is also the time for limits. A kitchen, like a street, should not be a place to play unsupervised.

I actually used the scratch-b-gone kit that you can order online. It worked perfectly. I wish I would have taken before and after pictures. I used it on my GE Cafe appliances which are true stainless steel. My FIL who works has been in the steel industry for over 30 years was amazed that the scratch, whcih was actually quite deep, came off! I have to caution, I was afraid to use it at first, so I first tested it on my stainless steel Simple Human trash can. It took off all scuffs and scratches. Then I tried it on the lower side of my fridge and while there was no scratch there, it didn't make the surface look any different. After seeing it didn't harm these surfaces, I used the finger strip it comes with which is for deeper scratches and used it going with the grain on the scratchon my fridge door. Then I used one of the pads it comes with which is for lighter scratches to kind of finish it off and polish it. It comes with instructions and even a dvd showing you how to use the kit. It's fool proof! I know I sound like a commercial, but I was soo excited that I got the scratch off that I just wanted to share it with you since you are asking! Good luck!

Different kids are definitely different. I remember a neighbor who had one child and was pregnant with her second at the time telling me, after watching my youngest, if my second kid is like yours I'm going to have to actually babyproof, aren't I? Yes, yes you are. Lol. Curiosity is good. But it does make safety more challenging. (And I have known a few kids who would have needed top cabinets locked too, fortunately my curious kid was not a climber.) My oldest wasn't like that so it was a bit of a surprise to me; and an aha moment that kids pretty much just come the way they come. Sorry, no suggestions. Good luck!

I think you can install the type of retractable screens that roll up to one side of the door for a french door (it's two units that come together in the center). This would have the added benefit that you wouldn't have to look through the screen when it's not in use, or fuss with opening the door and the screen when you are just passing through. If the doors open out the screen goes on the inside. If they open in, they go on the outside.

Between our toddler and covid we’re not doing much entertaining, so we just use kitchen cabinets and a sideboard with full doors to house our bar supplies. They make plastic covers for exactly this. Babies R Us or onestepahead.
We use them on our outside grill knobs too.

I have the GE Monogram range...If the rangetop is like the regular range, you will definitely need something to cover them. My butt turns them on accidentally at least once a month when I am leaning up against them. I only wish they were the push in and turn kind. The clear covers should work on them that another poster referenced..

Wait till you cook on the thing though. It is fabulous!
