pantry with display options

Hi, everyone. I'm new to this forum. My husband and I are remodeling our kitchen. We are having a floor to ceiling (8') pantry put in on one wall, which is about 10-11 feet long. The pantry will be 20" deep (to make room for an island). I would like to have some open shelves (probably in the upper middle section) to display pottery, vases, servings dishes, plants, etc., but haven't seen any pantry designs that incorporate this. The cabinets will be custom made by an Amish business, so they can design anything we request.

Perhaps what I'm really looking for is a pantry on the left and right, with a narrow middle section consisting of base cabinets and then upper cabinets with glass or no doors.

Does anyone have pictures they can send?

You could do a modified version of my china cabinet wall. Maybe make the two end cabinets the closed pantry storage and the middle version glass like mine. The drawer base on the bottom of mine works wonderfully for food too so use those as pantry drawers as well. This is one of my favorite features of my kitchen.

The wall is 15 feet long and the cabinets are each 36 wide.

Excuse the middle light being out- the electrician needs to fix it!

Couple of thoughts for you.

Changing depths (in beagles photo, but its very discrete) and/or changing heights is a great way to differentiate and emphasize. Depending on what style you're going for, I linked to a sample pic of change of heights and "setting into" a wall.

The exact opposite of what you're thinking can work well too! Narrower display cabinets on both ends of a fatter center pantry.

Cautions:
- Unless you have a lot of very deep display pieces, I'd be leery of using 20" deep display cabinets. I'd be thinking of more like 14"-16" and I'd run a plate groove in the back of each shelf to be able to stand up lovely plates behind something like a collections of service pieces.
- Consider where you'll set items down (out of grocery bags or still in bags) while you transfer stuff to the pantry area(s). I'd put it close by as it can be annoying to be surrounded by doors with no place to use as a ledge for temporarily parking even one or two items while you open up the doors.
- 20" is very deep for a storage pantry too.

Think about whether you'd like shallow shelves on the doors (say 6-7" deep) and then have interior shelves that are 12-13" deep. At least on the "tops". They don't have to be full height - so consider a higher, deep shelf for paper products or other bulky items - like an infrequently used turkey roaster.

Think about what you might have in drawers and what sizes would be helpful. If you have a sizable pet, consider where you'll put their food.

Another option for pullouts/interior drawers would be Blum's metabox line. You buy the drawer sides + glides, and brackets to attach the sides to the drawer front. Also, rear-mount brackets if you have face frame cabinets (not nec if your cab is frameless). Then you cut your drawer bottom, back, and front to the exact width you need. You're welcome. Landing space for the fridge would be the island--I moved the island to make the main traffic aisle wider, but it could be a little narrower. The narrow cabinet would be a pantry or pull-out, rather than a narrow counter. I love built-ins and nooks, especially in houses of a certain vintage. The butler's pantry would fit right in, IMO. The uppers there could be 15" and bases 18", with the counter at 19"--plenty of room to stack dishes or make toast. If the fridge moves to the short wall by the nook, will the oven be in the top/sw corner? Will the DW be on the right side of the only sink? Between our toddler and covid we’re not doing much entertaining, so we just use kitchen cabinets and a sideboard with full doors to house our bar supplies. @rr4580 I'm not sure what you mean about changing my opinion? I would make the current fridge wall the beverage center. Most adult beverages are not being poured AT dinner - it's the casual appetizers and happy hour time that you want it accessible, when people will be in the great room. So I would put your wine fridge and ice maker on that side, and the fridge in the corner by the pantry. It won't crowd your range. The best kitchens are compact. Another thing you might consider - it's best to have your sink & DW pushed over to the end of the island so you have sufficient prep space next to the sink. Symmetry is overrated and only looks good on paper. My island is 10' as well. My sink and DW are at the very end (intentionally), leaving me 5' for prep. I use every inch. Next to the trash I have a 3 drawer stack with all of my prep tools. I've been in my house for 3 weeks and so far it's the most efficient kitchen I've worked in. It's also better not to have your sink & range lined up, as those are the 2 busiest places in your kitchen. Your DW door will overlap with your range, which means you will trip over it if you ever have it open while you cook (oven door may also interfere with the DW door). One more thing - make sure your overhang is at least 15" - otherwise your cabinets are going to get banged up and it won't be that comfortable to sit there.
