Recommendation for stone dealers/fabricators near NYC

Can anyone recommend a place near NYC? I am leaning towards quartzite.

Also, for those of you who have purchased quartzite recently, what is the price range per square foot installed? I am pretty much sure that I will do an eased edge. I like simple.

Not sure about fabricatorS (I'm located upstate), but I visited PMI International in LIC and found my super white quartzite there. They have a HUGE inventory and I found the people there easy to deal with. It's a great place to start if you can stop by their yard during business hours and just take a look at the slabs in person. I too ended up using a fabricator outside the 5 boroughs. All the fabricators in NYC told me they couldn't help me find a recently discontinued Caesarstone color - Rosemary. Thanks to GW, I found the stone and this excellent fabricator in CT. Excellent price compared to NYC fabricator quotes I had received for other Caesarstone colors (some places were up to $1,000 more for the same stone!). Not sure it they have what you are looking for, but they will absolutely be friendly and helpful.

Hi just wanted to update you NYC dwellers on my experience with Plessers in LI. I ordered an undercounter refridgerator and a DW on 11/29. I cancelled the delivery once because I wasn't ready to receive and rescheduled for Dec 27. On Dec.23 I had to leave the country (2 months)because of a death in the family. When I returned I rescheduled for Mar 1. Plessers delivery called the night before the delivery to tell me a time frame of 6-7am(never had anyone do that before, usually it's "sometime between 8-5")and called that morning to tell me a more exact time 7:15am. They were on time ! I paid for gold delivery since I'm in a walkup(2nd fl)and curbside wouldn't work. I found all of the customer service staff(Patrick, Anthony, Jessica) helpful and pleasant to deal with. Also they provide their own 10year part warranty. I'm not sure how it works with other dealers but I was very happy that I was not penalized for delaying my delivery.

I took a ride to American Granite today. What a difference in the showroom compared to Benchmark. Carlos and Rebecca were both helping me, and very nice. I saw one that I liked with the colors of my cabinets and floor. I'm doing a small condo kitchen that's across the street from the beach, that I'm moving to as my primary residence. The granite I saw was Juparana Columbo, it reminded me of the sand when it get the dark grey streaks in it. I like the slab, they only had one (which is all I need) that was in the light muted colors. All the others with the same name were from a different lot and were much darker and a redish peach. I'm just not sure I like the pattern of the slab. I took pictures, and thought I had a picture of the whole slab, but I only got parts of it. I wonder if Carlos would be able to take a picture of the whole slab and email it to me. Asked about a sink, and was told it would be about $200.00 additional. Benchmark was including a 16 gauge SS D-sink. Has anyone heard of AW Eurostile in Ocean or a place in Shrewsbury (not sure of the name)? I'm trying to avoid going to OHM, I think it might be too overwhelming, and I'll never be able to make a decision. I'd rather stay with smaller places. I live in Chester County, we used Stone Masters in Kennett. Excellent work. Not sure if they come to Bucks county. (I used to live in Southampton growing up--where are you?) I have heard good things about Colonial Granite & Marble. They sound like they have a huge selection. Try searching for hobokenkitchen, she was looking for granite places a few months back in the Phila area. It's a good informative thread. If I find the thread, I'll post it too.

The granite portion of my kitchen remodel has definately been the most aggravating. Ok, I too faxed my layout that included all of the cabinet sizes to 3 different fabricators. I then chose my fabricator based on the bids and had him hold the granite I spent 6 months looking for. So after I sign the proposal and give half down, they send their guy to measure. Then I get an email telling me that I owe them $1500 more because they went by my cabinet dimensions and their original quote didn't include overhangs. My husband always goes out and previews jobs before he takes them. This protects the customer and us. We know what we are getting into and we can give them an accurate price. And we don't base our prices on the value of someone's house(but I am still always worried people are doing that to me). I asked this particular fabricator to come and measure and he said it was his policy not to do that until the proposal is signed. I am wondering if this granite fabricating business is just a shady business. It's not like I could go find someone else. I don't feel like fighting to get my money back. I would probably lose more than I gain and to top it off they know they have you because they are now holding your slab. I wouldn't hesitate to have anyone bid based on the actual job site. You are under no obligation to go with his bid. Even if he does his bid based on your house value, you will figure that out when comparing bids. Make sure your bids include the square footage of each slab they are using. I noticed that all 3 of mine just said something like perimeter countertops:$5000.00 with no sq. footage. I hope you have better luck than I did!

I did visit PMI and they were very nice and really worked to make me happy. Unfortunately they are a bit pricey. The lot of Super White I went to see for some reason was deemed "very special" and they raised the price quite a bit when giving the price to my fabricator. I left that fabricator, went elsewhere and got a better deal on SW that wasn't from PMI.

Perhaps find the fabricator first, one you like. Then see where they pull their slabs from. It might work out better for you.

Thanks all. I just talked to my tile guy who did my bathrooms and told him I want to find slabs of vermont danby and calacatta caldia marble, as well as quartzite (something very white like taj mahal since I am going with walnut cabinets and kitchen is narrow). He is going to send me to a few yards that he uses. We will probably use the same fabricator.

Prices seem all over the place. KD says he was quoted a price of 225/sf for the marble from their stone guy, a local place in manhattan that I visited says about 180 (but says he will work with me) and my tile guy says about 160. The KD price sounds crazy high.

I need about 60 sf.

How do these prices sound?

Your kitchen designer will receive a commission which is why the price is so high. You can go direct to a fabricator after finding the stone at the yard. This will save you money. There are numerous listings for fabricators and granite yards on this site if you search "granite".
Its not clear to me if you are getting a price for the material only or material plus fabrication and installation. Are you comparing apples to apples?
As a designer, I use all different yards, most of the ones that are recommended in posts on GW. My fabricator buys the granite from the yard, templates, and installs. From your description, it seems like you have "middle men" and that is escalating your costs. My fabricator is in Linden, NJ. When I choose granite, he inspects the pieces before my purchase to insure I am receiving quality stone and that he can cut around fissures etc.
Is your tile guy also a fabricator?

Thanks avidchef. The price I got from the KD was an all-in price, including installation. I know that they are taking a markup which is ok with me as long as the price stays reasonably competitive.

My tile guy is not a fabricator. If what we did last time for the bathrooms is an indication, he will send me to a couple of yards (probably in Long Island City or Connecticut) and if I find what I like, he will have me tell the yard to ship it to the fabricator. The fabricator who did my bathroom counters did a nice job. They were Granitops in Yonkers, if I remember correctly.

I know that my tile guy will take a markup if I go with him and I guess I am ok with that too, since otherwise I am just someone off the street to these folks. I guess the question is how much is ok. He probably wants 20%. I also guess that if I went directly to the fabricator, they would charge me more than if my tile guy got involved.

I am really afraid of doing this one on my own. I am an experienced shopper, and sourced all my bathroom fixtures and fittings myself and have sourced my kitchen appliances, but stone is a bit of a black hole to me.
