Tennessee Cabinet Sales Tax Issue

I thought I would throw this out for comment by anyone who has purchased kitchen cabinets recently in Tennessee.

We just had a KD that works for a major kitchen cabinet business tell us that the sales tax would be substantially less than the regular 9.5% rate if their installers installed the cabinets. If we elected to have the finish carpenters install the cabinets instead, our GC's normal procedure, we would have to pay the full 9.5% tax on the cabinets. She said that the tax savings essentially amounted to getting the installation for free.

Needless to say, we are highly skeptical. When I pressed her on the actual rate if we used her installers, she said she wasn't sure exactly how much it was, but thought it was around 3.5%. She claimed that they had only known about the installation "loophole" for a couple of years themselves.

None of the other kitchen cabinet places we are talking to has mentioned anything like this. You would think they would know.

Anyway, all comments are welcome.
