How important is it to line your faucet up with your drain?

This question came up in another thread, but since it was not the original question it didn't get much play. Akchicago made some great points about why some people prefer faucet/drain alignment -- better for running garbage disposal, less potential for splashing -- but I was hoping other people would weigh in. Particularly people whose faucets do NOT, at any time, spray directly down into their drains. And who have garbage disposals (bonus points for that). Any problems/regrets?

I really need to figure this out before I have my faucet installed. Centering it on the sink, my preference, would make the water hit about two from my off-center drain. And I plan to put in a garbage disposal. Haven't decided whether to go with batch feed or continuous feed.... Is that a factor as well? And if they don't line up, does it matter how much they don't line up by? IOW, is having the water hit 2 inches from the drain better than having it hit 4 inches from the drain?

Thanks in advance for any opinions, and apologies in advance if this has already been discussed to death here... maybe somebody could shoot me a link if that's the case... (I tried several searches without much luck.)

I would say it's not important at all. Neither of my faucets line up - kindof. My prep sink has the drain off center because I rotated the sink 90 degrees from how it's built to be situated, so you have to actually turn the faucet sideways to get it to shoot down the hole. I never do except when I run the disposal. I have no splashing problems hitting the bottom of the sink.

My main sink does line up but the stream of water curves so it doesn't go down straight to the hole. No splashing issues. When I run the diposal, I use the pull-down sprayer and shoot it directly down the drain, which is totally fine because whenever I run the disposal, I am doing it as part of the cleaning out the sink from debris, which means I have the sprayer in hand anyway.

I think the garbage disposal needs water and it doesn't matter which direction it comes from as long as it is getting fed water. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Maybe my faucet is different than some, but the water falls in the drain perfectly at a certain pressure, but if I turn it on strong it over shoots the drain. With a 10" sink splash isn't a problem.

I want to warn garden webbers about WS Bath Collections and Modo Bath. Wael, of WS Bath Collections and probably the WS in WS Bath, was extremely rude and unprofessional in the handling of an order that was placed with Modo Bath. Tried to get more spec information from Modo Bath prior to placing order. Manager, George, provided incomplete and incorrect information. We proceeded with the order with the promise that the items could be returned. It became complicated when the items turned out to be other than described by George. Stay away from these two companies.

Laura, you are so lucky to have more sunlight! Good for you! I have to wait until the leaves fall before I can get anymore sunlight for my trees..I have come close many times of giving up and then I have also prayed a storm would rip the tree down blocking all the sun I could use, then I kind of like that tree. You should see all the birds in it..My yard would be so exposed if it did come down..So, I guess I just except the fact it's the best I am going to do without added lights, throw them out, or pray they cut that tree down...I fluctuate..Arg Jinny..How do you temps look for the rest of week or month? Are you going to be abnormally cold this year? I hope not. It really stinks..I am glad you brought them all in as you did

MrsPete, they do have island/deck-mounted potfillers! Yes, but they're funny looking and extremely expensive (unless you're also placing the sink in the island and are bringing water into that area), which is why I called them "possible but not realistic". Be sure you have easy access to the water shutoff valve so you don't have to run to the basement (or wherever) to shut it off. I also wonder how long it would take to discover you have a pipe leak (pinhole or other) - especially if the leak is not enough to noticeably reduce the pressure. If you don't use it every single day and use a large quantity, I would think the water sitting in the pipes would be an issue - and since you don't have a drain beneath it, you can't run the water for a minute or two to get fresh water. Finally, if you must have a pot-filler, then be sure you can access the plumbing behind it in case you have problems with it - I don't think you'd want to have to chop a hole in the wall to get to it. I think these are "cons" to all plumbing. For example, I had an "invisible leak" behind my dishwasher and didn't know it until damage was done -- yet no one says, "Get rid of dishwashers because this could happen!" The fear of leaks is over rated. Definitely. Two valves would have to fail before you'd have a leak. You're right that you're much more likely to have a leak in the ice maker.

I think Jake is correct about things being monumental during construction. I had a similar issue with my kitchen sink cans....joist in the way. The one on the far right is completely off center. My electrician showed me the problem during construction but didn’t offer much in the way of a solution (and neglected to mention the option of a smaller profile can). We tossed it around a bit at the site and decided on what you see here. So not much symmetry, but honestly, I NEVER notice it. I DID during construction. But after it was all said and done, it became a non-issue. I find I don’t look up at the ceiling much. And really, unless one stands squarely in the middle of the window and examines things closely, you just don’t notice it because the other cans will look uncentered as well if viewing slightly from the side. I like things even Steven and pretty much perfect, but a lot of that fades away after a while. Also, when viewing photographs of the issues, many times they seem to be more pronounced compared to seeing things in person.

This helps a ton.

One thing I'm curious about: do batch feed disposals require more or less water while they're running than continuous feed? Would both types require me to shoot water down the drain with my sprayer while disposal is running (assuming my faucet doesn't send water directly into the drain)? Not a big deal, but could be a tie-breaker in my choice between BF and CF.

In answer to your question, no, batch feed disposals do not require more or less water than continuous feed disposals. They both require the same amount of water. The disposing goes faster and more efficiently if the water is flowing directly into the drain from the faucet, but it's a minor difference. As long as you have a good amount of water going into the drain, that's what's important.
