is there a reason I SHOULDN'T get a copper sink?

Love the look of a copper undermount farmhouse sink. What are the pros and cons of copper? Thanks!

You will be working really hard to keep it looking its best. It will get tarnished all the time, especially the interior.

depends on what you want. If you are expecting a new-penny bright copper sink all the time, you will as homey-bird suggests spend a lot of time polishing it. Chances are, however, you are contemplating a sink that has already acquired a patina (at the factory probably). This is the case with my master bathroom sink.

I find that it needs a little more care than I (an admitted bathroom slob) am used to giving other sinks. If I want it to have that nice glowing patina, I need to make sure I wipe it out every day after using it. Anything acidic or toothpaste will take off the patina, leaving little bright spots behind. And a few days of use without wiping it out seem to leave it a little ickier looking that say a porcelain sink.

But, that may not be an issue at all for a kitchen sink that is used on a daily basis for say, dishes, and wiped out afterward.

You will probably find that you want to slather it with an oil or waxy substance every week or two. It will give it that nice glow and help protect it from the little bright spot syndrome as well as a tendency to accumulate ick. I use paste wax, but I remember reading about one GWer who simply gave hers a wipe with whatever waxy/oily substance she had nearby every few days...baby oil, hair gel, etc.

I know there are GWers out there with copper kitchen sinks, so hopefully they'll weigh in for you and give you more of the inside skinny.

Add it to your collection but don't use as prime view. Mix with other small trees to get that burst of spring and early summer color. In zone 5 it doesn't burn as quick. As ken always says there is a season for every tree. I don't know of too many other small, unique trees to give you a burst of purple. I put mine between a Picea omorika 'Bruns' and Pinus heldreichii. Eventually I'll work in late summer and fall interest with various shrubs and perennials.

I was in the market for a particular china pattern for a cup and saucer, broken when moved to America. It was not a normally exported pattern and I've searched for it here for more years than I care to remember. Ebay and replacements are not the only vintage china sources on the inet. I finally found a site giving my dinner service a run # so I'd know what to look for, and then googled until the cows came home. I found what I wanted half the price of what replacements were adertising it. I can appreciate the whole ball of wax you would like to have costing that price, given what they wanted for my measly little cup and saucer. But since that is a very well known brand, I'll bet you could find a source for it elsewhere as well. That said, since I'd been looking for the teacup and saucer for over forty years, I'd have paid a ridiculous amount for it to have it to finally complete my set. I have boughten antiques as investments, and normally wouldn't pay more than what I thought I could get out of them in return, and enjoyed them in the interim.......but if it's something I personally covet, I'm more likely to just figure what's it worth to me? After the bath, a couple shriveled, clearly not liking it. But it's definitely satisfying to see white dots floating in the water. I left them out to dry and started to pick more stubborn bugs from some of my plants. Most of them were motionless, so I assumed the soap bath did the trick. So I left the rest alone. Nuked all the soil of new pots with boiling water, followed by a 4 minute cook off in the microwave. I set them off to dry for a few days, and I tried to pot them up last night. And guess what? The mealies SURVIVE!! Except for those that I had picked on, the rest still had tiny bugs crawling in them. You can call them eggs, larvae whatever, I got fed up. Took out my tub of rubbing Alcohol dunk half a containerful with more dish soap, and yanked everything into the concoction. Rinsed them into another tub of water, and set them off to dry again. This time I inspected every single one. Miraculously, no white stuff or survivors. I'm guessing it worked. The poor remaining plantlets all don't look good. I guess only time will tell if these all can be saved. Will continue to update... Oh, and I also found infestations on my new jades too, thankfully I caught the spread and am now containing it, or at least am trying to..

I can't grow Freesias outside in my climate but I have seen them growing happily out of stone walls in Italy. My reservation about this idea would be that they need entirely different conditions from most vegetables. As socalgal said, they don't want much water and I suspect they don't want rich soil. In your picture is it possible that the Freesias are actually planted in the gravel edge rather than in the beds themselves? Maybe you could grow them in pots and place them around the garden? Perhaps you could contact the guy who does the blog where you found the picture and ask how he does it?

i believe more in live and let live. It's not like it's a cockroach. It's a metal sink. Let it be.

The main reason why not to get a copper sink is the excruciating hesitation you will feel beforehand.
