Do I need fill for cabinets between fridge and wall?

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has done this and can share their experience? I have a 90" wall that starts on at the right side of an open doorway and is layed out like this from L to R:

1. 3" space from door trim

2. 18" cab

2. 33"w full depth fridge

3. 36" space

4. wall

In the 36" space I'd like to have a 30" deep drawer base with 15 or 18 deep uppers installed down to the counter. Like a hutch type setup. This is my pantry/food storage space.

Will I need some fill on each side or can I go the full 36" wide? I'm guessing I will for the door swing of the uppers but what about the drawer base? I wanted full overlay but would partial overlay solve this issue?

Hi, Deedles. Sorry I don't remember the details about your plan from earlier posts. Are you doing custom, semi-custom or stock cabs? I don't see why you can't have full 36" wide cabs with no fill. Cab doors open as far as they can (even with pulls), then you reach in. Why loose the extra 3 in of storage pace, when a door won't take up that much room? Can you do drawers on the base instead of doors? Even with doors, I would prefer pull-outs in a 30-in deep base (which we're planning in one area), rather than fixed shelves which are very deep. For the uppers, we have friends who have a section of uppers that are full-width, but the doors are inset a few inches so they can swing more than 90 degrees open; no loss of storage due to fillers. We've got a similar space next to a deep fridge, cab space is 48 inches wide, and we're going with a pair of DIY vintage bypass sliding glass doors. Don't know that I'd want that if it were smaller than a 24 inch open space on each side when open. Good luck!

Miz: I am doing drawers on the bottom, at least at this point. I guess you're right... the doors will open as far as they can...guess even with fill I won't get much more swing to them anyway.
Your vintage glass doors sound really neat!

@Melissa R is correct, you could use a filler strip there. But that doesn’t solve the fact that the solution to your microwave door problem means the cabinet on the left is now installed on top of window trim. Your microwave is too big for the space you have allotted for it, or you haven’t installed it properly. So pull down the cabinets and microwave, rehang the cabinets correctly, and move on from there. I know it sucks to realize you’ve made a mistake, but scootching things around to cover it up just creates more issues down the road, as you now realize. Solve the actual original problem, the microwave, and everything will fall back into place. BTW, you need a filler strip between the upper on the right and the wall as well. Good luck!

Hello Guys. Wonder if anyone has had experience installing soffit (wall between cabinet and ceiling) or seeing anything similar to an arrangement like this with difference cabinet heights? im mainly concerned about the corner cabinet. The idea is to replace the microwave with a range hood and vent that up and to the right. It would be exiting the home above the tall cabinet next to the window. I would need to cover this area potentially with soffit. roof ventilation is not an option

Yes there should something to cover that area because if your tiles do not cover the the window will not look good and the finishing will not be neat and proper.

You can not do an inset design of this complexity without an experienced kitchen designer on board, designing this for you. There will be thousands of dollars in mistakes, just due to you not knowing how and what to measure. You don’t know what you don’t know. Inset is not putting together a prefab doghouse. It’s building a space shuttle. 1/16” matter. Having a skilled installer also matters. It does no good to add extended stiles if someone has no clue how to scribe them to make them work. This is high level cabinet installation. Not throwing apartment level boxes on a wall with a couple of screws. You have to design to the level of skill of the installer. Or there’s also thousands in errors that happen. A DIY job is designed differently than one for a skilled and experienced cabinet installer. The installer won’t need to know to do some things.
