Painting the Area Above Stairs??

I would like to do this myself. What kind of set-up do you guys use when painting the tall area above your stairs. Scaffolding, two ladders, etc? Will the "Little Giant" ladder work for an area like this. For some reason, I'm just stumped on how to do this. I really don't want to hire a painter, when I could do this myself.

We used a long straight ladder proped against the stair at the bottom and wall at the top.. it was SUCH a pain.. doable but if I have enough in my checkbook.. I will pay someone to do that next time! :) cutting in was the hardest part.

The Little Giants can be easily adjusted so that one end is shorter than the other- that way you can position it as an A on the stairs. I did this a few years ago outside on some stairs that lead to my basement when painting my house and it worked fine and was really solid. I'm going to try it inside over the winter.

First of all, don't be concerned about the original paint, whether it's oil or latex. No need to test! Since it's a 12 year old build, we also know there is no lead. Clean the surfaces with Dirtex before sanding. Dirtex will clean away the dirt, body oils, etc. and help dull the paint. Sand lightly as needed. Sand just enough to dull the finish and smooth the patched areas. Use a #180 grit sanding sponge. Primer. ICI Dulux offers a no VOC primer that I've used and it performs as labeled. That's one choice among many. Paint. ICI Dulux offers the Lifemaster 9200 Semi-Gloss enamel. No VOC. Again, one choice among many. Since you live in Canada, you may have to make choices based on what's available there. *S* General Paint of Canada makes great paint! Michael

You can use a painting pad, but those will follow the line of the ceiling so if it is not straight, your paint line will not be straight. One way to get above stairs is to put the extension ladder at the bottom of the stairs and then run a plank from that ladder to another ladder at the top of the stairs which is usually a step ladder. You can also use a brush clip mounted on an extension pole, but that is very hard to control to make straight cuts. Many times though above stairs there is only about 4-6 feet that I can't reach so the brush clip works for cutting in only that small section.

Hey Bobsmyuncle I was hoping you'd come to the rescue. You gave me lots of info. to refinish a desk awhile back. I failed to complete it because I'm too chicken to use a harsh stripper. The top was the only part I got done. I'd love to take a hands on refinishing class but there's nothing like that around here. Anyhow, If I use a stripper to remove the existing finish do I need to take down the stairs? (I'm hoping you say no.) What about ventilation? Can I just open some windows and use fans? As for painting, I know my Dad took all of the stair pieces to his work and sprayed a clear coat. I don't know what it was but could find out. Just clean and 'scuff' not completely strip the protective clear coat? Thanks for the BIN suggestions. I'll use that if I ever get brave enough to try this. With the BIN after you sand, prime, is there a chance you would need to lightly sand and prime again or should one coat do it? I'm assuming there are directions on the stuff but was curious.

We have both an articulated ladder and an extension ladder. What I do is use rollers and paint pads on a really long stick and paint right up to the ceiling - and then make my husband get up the ladder to paint the top edge :)
