Ever FORGET how you decorated something for past holidays?

Yesterday I found some things for Christmas I hoped to decorate with and was making just a few mental plans of how I'd do the mantle and table in my diningroom...

Then realized I had NO idea what colorscheme, items I'd used... not ANYTHING for the year before.

I swear, if I didn't take pictures to record these things, I'd be entirely out of luck.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who forgets what's been done with the more transient decor! :-)

Nope, I take pictures every single year - otherwise I would forget....um, what was the question again? :p

I have more trouble remembering how I decorated my own house last year than remembering how my mom did it when I was 12 years old. You're definitely not alone.

I do not regret planting anything, but the former people who used to own the house a long time ago planted all sorts of unsightly bushes and hedges that would be hard to take out. And the creeping fig has spread everywhere and near impossible to take out. Some of the vines are over one inch thick and hardened, and the roots are getting into the flower beds, I don't understand why all these people have a love of hedges and bushes. Low maintenance? Easy to plant, very difficult to remove after 10 years. Btw, Grace, I love Sterling Silver, that's my favorite rose. :) We have trouble with our Gardenias too, they need humidity, and that's one thing lacking in Southern California. Monimaca, yes, Wisteria is terrible. Once it becomes established it's virtually impossible to get rid of it. The roots spread everywhere and it will try to keep sending up new vines, no matter how many times you try to cut it back. The vines will try to engulf and choke out everything. molewacker, redwoods are a little more tame in the dry Southern part of the State. The worst thing about them here us that they'll turn all brown if they don't get sufficient water, and they take up a lot of water. Some people can't resist planting them, because they are a majestic tree. The one the past owners planted that I hate the most... asparagus fern. That stuff spreads everywhere through it's little berries, usually growing out of all the bushes. It takes over the bush from the inside, starts metastasizing and choking out other parts of the bush. Spent hours trying to cut it all out, it left gaping open patches in the bushes where it had been growing. I see it growing in other parts of the neighborhood too, people just ignore it, I can see several bushes that over the years have become more asparagus fern than bush. The stalks grow very quickly and have little sharp barbs. You can't pull it out with your bare hands. It leaves an extensive network of bulbs under the soil that will keep sprouting out new stalks. It's a nightmare.

A few years back my wife and I were traveling on business in Brazil over Thanksgiving. A professor my wife was working with took us and several of the students to a churrascaria for dinner on Thanksgiving. (A churrascaria is a restaurant where servers roam around the restaurant with skewers of various cooked meats, continually stopping at each table to carve off some to everyone at the table) While there I mentioned that it was the US holiday of Thanksgiving and described it to the professor and the Brazilian students in general terms: get together with family and/or friends and have a large meal together, and described the "traditional" Thanksgiving meal. I was merely trying to make conversation, and make the point that what we were doing was pretty similar to the Thanksgiving tradition. However the professor responded "I'll see what I can do" and flagged the head waiter over, and spoke to him in rapid Portuguese. The waiter responded to us "We don't have any turkey but I'll see what we can do." and disappeared into the kitchen. About 10 minutes later he emerged from the kitchen followed by a server carrying a large skewer of meat, he presented it to us with a big beaming smile saying "This is as close as we could get to turkey. It's Ostrich." It didn't taste even a little like turkey, but it was delicious.

I haven't noticed any difference, but people here put up lights around mid-October when we really start losing daylight. The really Christmas-y ones come down or get turned off after New Years, but the white or colored ones remain lit until March when the daylight is back. As far as inside, I've actually decorated more this year. I bought a new tablecloth and it was 18" too long. I cut off one end and redid the hem and then made two pillow covers with the fabric for the pillows on my loveseat. We have a loveseat in the dining area. We have a traditional staircase and railing, which lends it'selt to greenery and ribbons. My 12 yo strung lights through it also. I'm not crazy about sitting here with the lights twinkling, but they like it. Since our staircase is directly in front of our main front window, the lights show outside. The dresser in our transition area has been cleared off and my three nativity sets are there. In the living room, we put up the tree, which will end up pretty dry by New Years day. We put it in front of the window so it can be seen. I made a mantel scarf with gold tassels and since I had the electrician and carpenter build it so it has wiring, I plug in white lights and greenery and put up candles and tree balls. My coffee table is round, so it got a smaller tablecloth. I have one last quilted wallhanging to put up as soon as I can locate a push pin. I think it really helped that all of my decorations have been purged and organized. My four red lidded bins were easy to grab out of storage. They only had items I really wanted to use. There is additional room in them for the new items like the tablecloth and mantel cover. We've never put up lights outside. It's just too much to crawl around a couple of stories to string them, and I don't have any other decorations except a very large wreath. I'm a bit scared to put it up in this house because we have the original alum. siding in really good condition and the idea of popping a hole in it doesn't appeal to me. Gloria

ROTFL!!! Donka, all I can say is "Giddayup". I need to clean out the fridge, so I'm going to make soup base for the freezer with the turkey carcass, leeks, rutabega and carrots. I got some lasagna noodles, so I'm going to slice up some yellow squash that needs using, and the fennel bulbs I just got, and whatever peppers I have, and oven roast them, to layer with the ricotta. I have a little tzimmis left which I think I'll puree into the ricotta. I got some shallots, too. And I got some lamb shanks to braise with baby carrots and pearl onions and leftover sweetish red wine. And a chicken. It's a really big chicken. They tried to tell me it was a fryer, but it's 4.5 lbs.!! I think I'll roast it with the heels of my multigrain bread if it's not gone moldy, and an orange. I can try out the probe because I have no idea (other than the butcher's recommendation) how long to cook this big a not turkey. JRueter, I'm in Gelsonsland, so it has to be an amazing farmer's market to be really tempting. And yes, some of them are more about the social thing than cooking! The worst is being at a dinner party where the hosts are name dropping the truck farmers like they're best friends rather than customers. Needs, keep us posted!!! I'm keeping a good thought for Thursday!

I have to take pictures, especially of my Snow Village setup. I thought I was the only one who had to do this. I'm glad I'm not alone. :-)

This is extremely consoling. I honestly thought I'd done an entirely different look last year, until I saw the pictures.

Now I don't even know what year I was remembering.

But Mimi, you're quite right-- I can remember the decor of my mom's house just fine! (Of course, Mom did pretty much the same items in the same places every year... I wonder what HER secret was to remember this!)

Oh heck yeah, all the time. One year after getting really frustrated, I wrote instructions and then stuck them in the appropriate boxes. Now as we open the decorations, the instructions are there and off we go. Now having said this, being in a new house this year, it will be interesting to see how things will work out in the new home.

I think it's lots of fun not to remember! Every year I bring everything out, throw some things away, buy some new.
I like the different.
Last year I got rid of a lot of things after the holidays - so it will be interesting to see what I have left! ---- and then off to go shopping!!

It's hard to forget a lime green and fuschia color scheme with southwestern flair. I guess I am pretty consistent with what I like, so there is no forgetting. Even if I wanted to totally change my holiday decor every year, I don't have the time or money to do so. Which is OK because I really like what I have, and just build upon it each year.

Oh yes indeed!! :)

In fact -- AFTER the holiday -- my memory seems to return and I can suddenly think of things and items that I forgot to use ....... LOL!

I jumped on the less is more bandwagon a few years ago. I don't want to spend more than a day decorating inside and out. Less stuff means less to remember or forget, lol. Tree day is extra ... comes after the other stuff is up.

Meghane, I think it's nice you've got a very specific, very "you" and individual look for holidays each year.

I was thinking, I also usually forget decorative items I buy at end-of-season really cheaply, and then the next year it's all a big surprise. "Hey, where'd THAT come from?"

I guess I should be grateful that I like what I bought myself the year before. :-)

Lots of lime Christmas decor out there this year. Have fun. It's very pretty.

I understand about "western" Christmas. The first year I lived in California, I thought it was to neat to eat my turkey, go out to soak up some rays and catch the 'ice cream man' for desert. :)

Would you believe I didn't even *think* to take pictures until last year, and even made notes? I do several trees, and know the decorations I use on each tree, but it's the mantel, DR/foyer/kitchen tables, railings, and other decorated places I forget about.

Glad I'm not alone. I had to refer to a picture for the Thanksgiving rooster and boa/acorns.

Wow, I really thought it was just me. I forget I buy things, forget where I put them, forget when I used them or where. It's pathetic, but can't be helped I guess. DH says because I'm always in a hurry (we have 5 kids!) I don't have time to dwell on things. It's more like ... "get this done and mark it off my list" type of life at this point. LOL! ;o)

I just saw my photos from last year's Christmas, and was impressed that my entryway looked so good. Last fall, I bought an antique red sled, and for Christmas season, a friend helped me make a swag with berries, and I wrapped white lights all around it. I honestly forgot I had even purchased that expensive little gem until I saw the photos from last year!! LOL!

So, opening my Christmas decoration boxes is like Christmas for me. I say "ooh, forgot we had this" and "where did I buy this thing"?

Oh yah, I'm a fruitcake! It's pretty bad.
