Question for people who mix paint colors to get a new color

I am hoping the color mixing experts here have an advice for me. We have mixed F&B Stony gray with white 1-to-1 to lighten it up. DH painted the staircase and the upstairs hallway and the color came out as I expected, light brownish gray.

But when he painted a wall in the living room, it looks very dark boring gray with a hint of green, the brown tone almost disappeared (hence my other post asking about brown-grays). I am guessing that since the hallway is narrow, the walls get more light. In the LR the walls get less light so we are seeing more gray. There are also seven white doors in that hallway so that may be also helping it.

Is there a way to correct the problem and somehow "add some brown"? I initially thought we should add more white. DH thinks white will dilute the color further so it will look lighter but be even more gray and less brown.
