We found that the Kirkland dog blankets from Costco work well for that purpose. We double up on them because one blanket doesn't quite cover the bed!

I do have nice bedding that I have folded at the foot of the bed but keep a matelasse spread on the bed. I can wash & dry it as needed. I have had aprint that you can't see the dog hairs but it was a big comforter & I couldn't wash it myself. So, I always felt grimey(spell??).

I have a cotton Matelasse (sp?) bedspread and since our dog doesn't shed, I let him jump on it. I just wash it more frequently. I hear you though on the silky spreads getting pulls from nails. I have a Pottery Barn one side silk, one side velvet coverlet that I use over top the bedspread in the winter for more warmth. I keep the silky side underneath. The velvet is very durable.

I walk through the bedding aisles of the department stores and run my hands over the beautiful comforters. Then I go home to the $50 gold quilted poly bedspread from Sears. It matches the dog's fur, and the mud and drool come out in the wash.

Sad, but worth the tradeoff of having a furball in bed with you.

Our big dog sleeps on our bed during the day. It took me a good six moths after moving in to find a comforter (did NOT want another duvet on our bed) that I liked. It's a patterned Ralph Lauren, reversible. I vacuum the top anytime I do our room. After 2.5 years, I just flipped it over, but the first side still looks good. He doesn't have super sharp nails, but does "dig" before settling down.

Other beds in our house have Peacock Alley matelasse or Bella Notte linen that are washable.

I guess I'm lucky...I haven't had any problems having Baxter on the bed, but he's a gentle little guy and I use a dremmel on his nails to keep them rounded.

My two covers (one is a coverlet, the other is a duvet with two down comforters inside) are from Restoration Hardware. I've washed them both before.

I took a close look at our "summer" spread. It's a Peacock Alley quilted print,in a light shade.....no pulls. It's polished cotton with a sheen. Tightly woven cotton must be the answer as our old( gave to DD...dang!)quilt was cotton and no, or few pulls. I, too, am no longer a fan of duvets, and really dislike those very heavy comforters, which are everywhere. Quilts(solid) are harder to come by, and often are "silk".I keep a down on he bottom to pull up when needed. So, to sorta hijack my own post, any good sources for cotton quilts( small stitches kind vs big squares or whatnot) ? caroloh, I love the velvet. Good to hear it's sturdy...hope it's not heavy. I'll go see if they still have them. Thanks. Allison, you mentioned 'other beds'. Are the dogs on those, too? How do those linens hold up? Ah the joys of pups:>) Our familyroom sofa is dressed in a quilt daily as it's her "day bed" :>) Okay, handy for the grandkids, too.

We have 3 little dogs (2 bichons and a maltipoo who thinks he is a bichon!) who have claimed our bed as their relaxation area. The 2 boys prefer to spend the night in their crates with their blankies but the little girl sleeps with us during the night. I look enviously at all the pictures of luxurious bedding in magazines and advertisements, wondering how it would feel to fall asleep amidst billows of down and the softness of 800 ply Egyptian cotton. Then I remember how it feels to have a warm, little furry body snuggled up to me while I sleep and I wish that it could go on forever.

Have decided after seeing these gorgeous pups so comfy, I just will not worry about it so much and keep on hunting for a cotton quilt. I did bring one home from H.Goods, made in china,but the quality of the cotton was so bad I hated it near my skin. Hmmm, wonder if my scardy-pup would allow a dremmel on his nails.

This is such a great topic. Thankfully I like quilts, and they're usually prints so if Grace tracks in dirt it doesn't show. However, she sleeps under the covers and sheds, so I have to change the sheets often. She's an English Pointer and my bestest friend in the world. In fact, she's back here in the office where we have a single bed...her head is on the pillow as she sleeps. :)

Hang on, silky bedspreads work quite well! Mine is dupioni silk (it has slubs so any pulls in the quilt disapear in it's natural appearance) and dupioni silk is totally washable (yes in the machine at home). I wash mine all the time. We have several visiters to our bed because it's so luxurious and comfy....two cats, one dog, an one very busy 3 year old, who spills, vomits and gad whatever else 3 year olds do constantly. We sleep under a nice fluffy down comforter (our only blanket) covered with silk dupioni duvet. :o) So, beautiful, rich bedding, and pets :) The do go well together.

Can I recommend something? A $20-30 dremel is all you need to eliminate what I think is the problem you fear (pulls caused by claws?). Baxter and I have a dremel session once a week. I work, he sits and gets treats. The end result is rounded nails that don't hurt the floor, couch, bed, etc.

I don't even dremel because of bedding...it never occurred to me. I do it because it's more gentle than clipping, which can put pressure on the quick even if the cut doesn't go into it. It takes a little practice, but after about two weeks, it's no big deal. Baxter actually comes running if I turn on the dremel and he's out of the room because he associates it with treats!

Our vet suggested a Dremel for their nails. I've just never bought one. His nails stay worn down pretty good by walking outside. I don't bother doing anything with the cats.

Leahcate, his does not get on the other beds. One cat does and I vacuum his favorite spot each week (on down filled duvet at bottom of bed).

jeanninepc99 - which type of bit do you prefer using? It appears that you use the bullet-shaped stone one and the barrel-shaped sandpaper type.

Bax has an hour walk and 2-3 fetch sessions each day (my boyfriend works at night and hangs out with Bax at my place for much of the day), so his nails don't get too long. I just like them rounded so he doesn't scratch himself or someone else too hard.

Gray, those are just pictures from the web. My dremel is just a barrel shaped head with a medium-grit sandpaper.

I bought an attachment that's made by the company that markets a dremel device for dogs (they're selling them at Bed, Bath, & Beyond now). It's much easier with the attachment.
