Are you mirrors already on your wall? Are they glued in place or clipped?

You should be able to have the mirror inserted in the frame at the frame shop. We took our mirror to the frame shop, picked out the molding that we wanted, and they took care of it. There might be a charge for installation though. If you're trying to avoid that, you could ask them how they install them, and do it yourself.

You could certainly do that, but if the mirror is attached to the wall with clips, you will have to make a couple of adjustments.

If the clips are plastic, you will want to change them to metal clips, which have a lower profile, and you would have to (or ask the frame shop to) notch out a bit of wood to allow for the clips, so that the frame will sit flush to the wall/mirror.

Lowes has those mirror frames. They come in different finishes and are flexible strips that you cut to size and even have corner pieces of moulding so no mitering. Saw them in the aisle with the window shades.

I have been looking at mirror mates ,but have not ordered yet. They are nice because the are custom mitered to fit around and hide the edge of the mirror and still be flush with the wall.

In answer to some of your questions, The clips on my mirror are metal and seem to be pretty flat. The mirror is not glued to the wall--it's actually propped in my LR because I was stripping wallpaper in the bathroom. Arrrggghh!.

kmcg: Thank you for the Lowes's suggestion. I had looked, but didn't find them--I was looking in the molding section. So, I'll go look with all the WTs and shades.

I had looked at mirror mates too, but I wanted something wider and more ornate and thought I could get exactly what I wanted with a frame. The mirror in the bathroom fits almost wall to wall, so I think the only way I can attach a frame is to glue it.

For those of you who have used mirror mates or wood molding, did you notch out the wood where the clips on the mirror were?

When we renovated our masterbath in 2005, I couldn't wait to try this. So, we chose molding, I stained it and then hand-painted some gold accents till I thought it was perfect. We got some kind of epoxy, (sorry, don't remember what) and glued the frame to the plate glass 7-ft. long mirror. The epoxy was a pain to work with.

I used to have a photo saved of this. I would need a photo, because when both my daughters (one married) came in to look, they both asked if I was going for a '70's look' for my bathroom! They were right. I hated it. It lasted maybe 7 months, then I ripped it all off, had DH take down the big mirror, and bought two Pier one metal framed mirrors.

kitty, I did notch the wood. There are detailed instructions in the link that dgo posted.

I just did this to my mirror. Way to big to take down to frame. So i bought wide fluted molding and the little square corners to match. This way didn't have to do any mitering. I painted the back of the molding black so you won't see a reflection of the wood if you don't paint it black you will see back of wood. I used all purpose glue called welders glue. You put it on both the mirror and the wood wait about five minutes then put up the wood, really joins fast.I then painted frame and it looks really nice. I also had to notch the wood but that was easy.

Thanks for the tip about painting the frame black--from reading the other posts I knew you had to paint the back--I just would have painted the same color as the frame. Anyway, this mirror is in a powder room and is about 3 ft wide and 4 ft tall--so not terribly impossible to handle.
