How tall are your ceilings? Remember tall people can get knocked sideways with a pot rack. I am speaking from experience and I also know the feeling of a pot rack that has been up for 6 years falling the day after 9/11,knocking a hole in the wood floor, the strange feeling I of knowing I would not need a laxative that day.

The ceilings are standard 8 foot. The pot rack [if I get it] would be over the island .

Those too are contenders (savannah ).I really know nothing about pot racks... just always thought they were cool. NOw that I will be replacing the florescent fixture... it seems like it could work? I would also supplement with recessed lighting.

Don't build your whole kitchen around a pot rack. Build your kitchen and if the pot rack fits, hang it.

If you really want it, get it.

That being said, I hope you have a really beautiful set of pots to hang on it.

Also, if you get a black one, they are a pain to dust.

But if you really want it....

I like the look in pictures, but in reality they don't look so nice unless you have attractive and spotless pots and pans and keep everything dust free. They also have a tendency to look messy and disorganized or off balanced if you randomly add your pots without thought.

Sheila, I think a pot rack would be grand... and yeah, just make sure it's solidly anchored to a joist.

Not to hijack this post, but would it look silly to hang one over the sink? That is the only place I have to hang one as it is on the island, well actually curves out into a v-shape from a wall, stove is over next to another wall. I've always wanted one.

I got the idea of a pot rack in the mid 1980s from a friend (decorator, European), who did international hotel decorating, who had one over her sink and I loved it. I put mine over island in one house, over bar in another and it was never as pretty as hers over the sink. Yes, they do look silly if you ever get the balance messed up or use the pots, and yes, mine was on a joist, but after years, pulling the pots off, putting them back, redoing them, dusting them, it will screw undone as the opening gets larger. Anything that is gauged at day in and day out, the hole enlarges, but the screw stays the same size. Thus, it will eventually turn loose and fall, if you actually use it, but if you just put it up for decor and do not clean it too often, it will stay put.

The good news is that the moldings and all should be received at the end of next week so all this stuff can really start!
Well, I am still quite undecided but at least relieved to know it has potential and that I am not delusional. (sometimes I worry:). Since the soffits will be removed (and all wallpaper) and I want to change the ceiling fixture, I know it would make sense to do all the changes at once as the wiring and any other adjustments are certainly easier when the area above the cabinets (where teh soffits are now) and above the island (where florescent beauty now resides_) will be easy to work with. I know the stained glass fixture over the table needs to be taken into account heavily which is why I may just go with recessed lighting. As far as the pot racks go though, I am looking at them more as an interesting light fixture and less to use for pots and pans (my pots and pans are not the pretty kind and I have enough trouble with displays and arrangements). Not sure how DH will feel about it being strictly a light fixture.
I really appreciate the comments which so far seem to be more concerned with the usage as opposed to if it would look good.If I have that right?
And after looking at them again, I think the chandelier (with candle lighting)type as pretty as it is, may not be the way to go.. chicory which one did you mean was fantastic: the callee one or the savannah one?
