Print the pics you have, if they print in the accurate color paint stores can do the the matching.

As nice as it would be, photos don't always show an accurate representation of the color. I'd advise bringing all the mint like paint chips you can bring home and do your matching there as the lighting at home will give you best place to color match. Make sure to check periodically throughout the day. Also remember to take into consideration the difference in the finish of the cabinet, which looks like it could be semi gloss, and the flat finish paint chips. Good luck!

I would just bring home a bunch of similar paint chips and pick the closest one. To prevent chipping, perhaps a satin poly?

The chipping/peeling is likely due to the original paint being an oil based and you went over it with a latex paint.

You'd need to strip off the old paint-the cream paint MAY peel off if you apply heat, as with a heat gun or even a blow dryer. You shouldn't have to strip the original paint if you can get off the cream.

Then wash the entire piece well with TSP and repaint the entire piece with oil based paint. I wouldn't try to match the original paint-probably won't get a good match, and if you want to seal it, the sealer might slightly change the color. Better off to repaint the whole thing.

My guess is the original green was the same color as the trim on the enamel top. The paint just faded with time. You have a couple of choices here IMHO, take the top with you and match the green, find a green kitchen tool (pretty much all those colors matched back then) and use that as your guide or grab a bunch of paint chip cards that look close and see if you get a match.
Me, I'd take the top with me. I'd love to see you use oil base paint or the new Advance by BM but you'd need to strip all the latex off first. Don't know why the latex is peeling, latex over oil usually works, it's the other way around that's a problem but it's really hard to get these older painted pieces clean after years of dirt and cooking oils, I'd just sand it down really well, prime and paint. Have fun, it's a great piece.

I did try printing a picture of the cabinet a few months ago, but could never quite get the color right in the photos.

I'm having a "feeling really dumb" moment right now. Why didn't I think of just picking up some paint chips? I guess I was just too focused on getting the exact shade of green, which is probably not going to be possible.

Pesky1, thank you for the suggestion of trying heat to remove the cream paint. I am definitely going to give this a try. Do you think it would need to be sealed after I get it repainted?

Great tips Pesky I got all into finding the right paint color and forgot to mention the prep work needed to keep this from happening again.
To test to see if the original paint is oil base, grab a cotton ball and some acetone based nail polish remover or denatured alcohol. Rub the wet cotton ball in a circular motion over a hidden area. If after a bit you find some paint residue on your cotton ball you've got latex paint. If not, it's oil.
If it's oil and you want to use latex paint you can do so after prepping properly.
1. Clean painted surface thoroughly.
2. Sand over the surface first with 150 grit then 220 grit for a smooth finish.
3. Using damp or tack clothe clean the surface.
4. Prime with good quality bonding acrylic based primer.
Now your piece is ready for painting with latex paint.

Since the piece is old and you don't know when it was painted make sure to wear protective wear, proper face mask and goggles to protect yourself from and chance that the paint is lead based.

Just agreeing that the peeling is likely because you painted latex over oil without priming. Get the new paint off, then sand and prime (I'd ask for a recommendation at the paint store) and you can paint again with latex.

If you search for "jadeite green", you might find a color that's close enough.
You can paint oil over latex, but not vice versa (unless you do the prep recommended above. Oil paint smells, and takes longer to dry, but you'll get a very hard, durable, cleanable finish if you use semi-gloss.

I've never painted anything with oil based paint before, always latex, but I think I'll give it a try with this cabinet.

I would still take the top (the enamel one that slides out) to the paint store. Thanks, sonicmom, jadeite was the word I couldn't come up with when I replied. That green trim has a definite "cast" to it and if you pick the wrong (maybe undertone is the word I'm looking for) one it won't look right. If you get a match you can always have the paint store cut it so it's the same tone as the top.

I'm confused on how the paint store would be able to match the green on the enamel top. The one time I had a color matched, the man had a machine that he used and the sample was placed on it. How would they be able to match the green since it is on the edge of the top?

Good question. I never thought of that but I would still take it in and match when the swatch and the top are together. Otherwise you're treking back a forth.

Sonicmom, you actually can use latex over oil if you sand well, clean, and prime. I have done it. Works fine. You do have to prime, though.

I was in an antique shop yesterday and there was one in there for sale. It had been painted white and had a round mirror on one of the doors. I've never quite understood why mirrors were put on some of them. Perhaps so m'lady could check to make sure her nose wasn't shiny or her hairdo was still in place while she was cooking!

Sure, no problem. This if from before we updated the kitchen. We bought a large hutch for the kitchen so I have the Hoosier in the guest BR right now storing linens. I didn't even know what one was. I was with a friend who was looking at them, and I wound up buying one. It is a very nice restoration. The porcelain top is original and was in great condition.

Thank you for the photo! It looks like yours is the same color mine was. Mine is reversed from the colors in your cabinet. Where yours is green, mine is cream. Where you have cream, mine was green. Is your enamel solid white or does it have any green on it?

Thanks. It is just a plain white porcelain top. I think he told me the cabinet was originally all green. He thought the creamy yellows were easier to sell. My friend bought a white one.
