Two Questions about Ballard Design
Comments (13)I've dealt with Ballard a lot, so here's my take on it. I've never had a customer service problem. I have been very happy with the mirrors I have bought, strictly from a design perspective. The "terrific tables" and glass tops are very good to fill in, although I prefer to use my own fabrics for cloths. I have never been entirely pleased with the quality of their fabrics. They have been either stiff and clunky, or gauzy and insubstantial on more than one occasion. The colors are not as clear and pretty as I'd like, which is a mark of cheap dyes. Some of the purely decorative things are nice additions to a scheme, but be careful of things that are a little over-designed...an extra curlicue, too much trim, that sort of thing. Some of the whimsical useful things are charming, and some are a little silly. I have not bought case goods from them - I find their version of traditional forms a little heavy and awkwardly proportioned - and have heard from others that they are probably not as sturdy as they might be for the cost. So I would say this...look very carefully at the pictures in the catalogue. You can see that some of their knock-off designs are more successful than others. Lots of good designers use their things to complete a look for a fairly small price....See MoreBallard Designs in COM?
Comments (3)So I ordered 1 of the Ballard chairs in their cheapest fabric(off white duck)to check it out when they were on sale- took 6 weeks. The chair came very well packaged by UPS(took me 10 minutes to get it out of the box and wrapping). The manufacturer is McCreary Modern who makes some of the furniture for Crate and Barrel and Room and Board. Their things are made in NC, not China. The chair is comfortable but not super cushy. It seems decently made(the nailheads were in line etc.) The fabric was stiff and cheap looking(but I purchased the cheapest fabric choice and in their defense they do offer swatches- their other fabrics are nicer from what I've seen). But that wasn't a concern for me as I am having it upholstered in COM (I got Crypton fabric from Joanne's for about 50% off). This chair was more expensive than most of the dining chairs at Ballard, so I'm not sure if the same manufacturer makes their parsons chairs etc. I figured I'd review the chair in case anyone else was interested. My only concern is that the seat height is 20"(about an inch too high for most standard tables). But my cabinet maker assured me he can shorten the legs if we need to (he says he does it all the time)....See MoreAnyone have the Gramercy Chair from Ballard Designs?

Comments (6)Wow, thanks so much @gooster! I've been eyeing the Coventry corner banquette forever and agonizing about the cost especially since I can't test it out. You were nice enough to respond to a post I wrote a few weeks ago on this and I've had your amazing kitchen reveal open ever since then. Do you happen to remember which fabric you chose? I have some samples already but was considering the Sunbrella heather grey (which I don't have.) The rest of my renovation is waiting till spring after a contractor disaster earlier this fall, and the whole experience of choosing the wrong person to write a big initial check to has made me even less capable of making decisions than I usually am. I feel like the sale is a nod to take the plunge finally....See MoreChristy Bell
