what's wrong w/ an empire valance in arts & crafts home?

The background story is way too lengthy to post but I had yet another meeting with our designer yesterday. I showed her some of the blue and brown fabrics I had found for the empire valance I want. (I fell in love with the look of karezz's valance and would like to duplicate it for the window over our sink. It's flat rather than swagged--if that makes sense.)

In our discussion the designer basically said no. It won't work because we have an Arts & Crafts home, and the valance is country French, etc. She is suggesting an "L" bracketed valance or cornice, very boxy and straight, with Roman shades beneath, probably woven wood shades. It will end up blocking the top part of the window, which I really dislike. (Not enough natural light as there is.)

I know it's our house and, ultimately, I can do what I want. But is she right? What makes a house Arts & Crafts anyway?
