What kind of window treatments would you use here?

Hi,

By the time we're finished with our masterbath reno, daylight hours will be pretty short so I'd like to order my window treatments in time to have them installed as soon as we're ready for them.

We replaced side by side casement windows with a pair of double hungs so that we can open the tops for ventilation without giving up our privacy. I'll need to go with some treatment with a top down/bottom up feature. I have TD/BU cellular shades elsewhere in my house but I was hoping to do something a little more lux in this room. (Fabric and/or texture but nothing too drapey or impractical!) There will be raised ledges on either end of the tub with Tuscan columns.

We've chosen and purchased a Pottery Barn Clarissa chandelier:

Considering that the shades would be at 3/4 height most of the time, would it look best to use some type of valance or cornice over the top? Would you treat each window separately or use one valance over both of them?

Since I'd have to stand in my tub to operate the controls, I was thinking of using a motorized control, if possible. Am I correct that a motorized control could either work TD or BU but not both? If so, can you operate it manually in the other direction?

I appreciate any advice or suggestions you may have. I posted a separate thread for advice about what shade of paint to use in each area around my tub.

Tuscan columns? Shutters of course... separate top from the bottom so you can open only the top. Preferably without that center adjuster bar.
Or you could use a grille...perhaps in 2 parts.\

Thanks, Linda. I do like shutters in some rooms but, with all of the other hard surfaces in there, I had something softer in mind. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by a grille(?)

I don't have pictures of our ancient MB, but I noticed that yours seems to be close to your neighbors. I am a fanatic about privacy, so I had wooden blinds installed on the large window in our MB. They've been up for 15 years and when we remodel later this year, we'll have new blinds. Am very satisfied with blinds, as they give almost total light control and can be adjusted for any privacy condition that one needs. If I were putting blinds above your tub, I'd add a valance or scarf or tie-back curtains to soften the look. If you're thinking about curtains or other fabric treatments, you might have a look at countrycurtains dot com. They have a great selection of looks and their prices are very, very reasonable (and their customer service is excellent). At the very least you'll be able to see lots of window treatments, from contemporary to ultra-feminine. Could I ask you about your shower? We're also probably going to install a drop-in. Where did you get yours, and what are its dimensions, height and width?

Maybe a plaid something like this: sparrow orchard This might work to bring out the warmer golden/yellow tones if you wanted to do that: petit fleur de lys mustard A tiny floral print (provencal) would be another fabric to consider. And the suggestion from kmcg85 about starting with the coordinating things on the website is certainly a good idea.

I like the idea of a roller blind for the kitchen window, if you need to cover it, or you could use a soft pleated or cellular shade. I only have a valance (Kuba cloth) in my kitchen window, which I added because I get too much morning light - otherwise I have a very pretty view from that window. For the bay windows, the corner might be a bit tight for outside mount Roman shades. I've always used drapes whenever I had bay windows, as they work well at the corners. You could use inside mount Roman shades, but they would have to be exactly the right width, and the length should be pretty accurate also.

My preference is up/down pleated shades, and depending on the rest of the windows and room, neutral off white textured panels hung from top window height to floor. (Remove the chest..). I often prefer the blinds on their own, but many others don’t.

The windows of a house says a lot about the personality of those living in it. The kind of treatment would definitely portray your level of elegance, taste, and wisdom. Your windows are wide and tall, and it entails some difficulty in measurements. Might I suggest some wooden shutters?

It is hard to know all of the possible options. I would use "Ask The Expert" on the Bali Blinds FB page. They have helped me with more than one quandary. Give it a try. See what they say.
