Dye leather?

I am finishing up the construction of our Library/Music Room. Most folks would call it a living room, but we are using it differently. We had floor-to-ceiling bookshelves made, so we have need for steps to reach the top shelves.

We already have a set of three leather-topped stacking stools that we bought from the Levenger's catalog a few years ago, and they work well for this purpose. My problem is that the Library is in vanilla, browns, green, and golds, and the stacking stools are baby blue! Here are two of them, in my old kitchen...

The leather tops are attached with screws, so can be removed. My question is, what is the best way to change the color of the leather? Has anyone done this, and what products have worked?

Secondly, What color dye would you use on these bright blue tops? Here is a picture of the colors in the Library

I would call the green in the rug and the slipcover a grayish green, maybe "spruce."

I can't see your pictures so I can't see the color or size of your stools. Are they so bright that their color can't be used in throw pillows combined with your other colors?

I've also seen leather on sale on ebay. If your stool tops can be removed easily, I might just replace the leather rather than try to dye it.

BTW, your room is coming along beautifully. (I've seen your photos over in..remodeling?)

Thanks, Dee. You probably saw my Smaller Homes posts. I am perplexed about the photos not showing, it sure seems arbitrary sometimes!

Imagine a sky blue color, but quite saturated and intense. The thing about the leather on the stools is that it is so nicely stitched - stitching frames the rectangle top and forms the shape of the curve as the leather top goes down to meet the wood. Imagine a picture frame shape, but in leather. Each stool top is made from five pieces of leather stitched together.

I hope there is a way to dye it...

Hi Emma, I'm doing this from home and don't have the leather handles with me, but its quite normal to see significant variances in aniline-dyed leather even within a given batch from a tannery. The higher grade the leather, the more they vary as a rule. Nevada and Canyon are Aniline-dyed, which means they are vat-dipped for color and are not corrected with spray paint (pigmented). Can't recall if Tuscany is aniline or not. Here's the general rules for leather and leather like products: Vinyl: Dead-on color. As it should be with a man-made product. BiCast: Closer to vinyl but consistent in color. Finished: Painted leather with topcoating. Mostly consistent colors, but can vary lightly. Aniline Plus: Vat dipped Aniline, but color-corrected with paint. So-So variance. Pure Aniline: The best! Vat-dyed with high color and significant shade variances. Looking at aniline-dyeed swatches is best done from about 10 feet back, seriously! Also, anilines tend to changes tones when pulled tight,so you see one shade when laying loose as a sample, and the finished product on the sofa will be lighter in most cases as its pulled tight. If color is absolutely critical, then you can request a cutting for approval prior to order production, but this often causes more difficulties than its worth. First off,it slows production about a month on average. Second, if you decline the sample, chances are you may have to wait another three to four months before a new leather batch arrives. Third, the sofa will look different from even the best cutting sample as the leather 'takes' differently in color and shade when upholstered. Hope that helps Duane Collie

Sorry, but I don't have photos of the repaired leather chairs. The finish on the repaired areas is as pliable and as matte as the original leather finish on the chairs. We had the repairs done on the wingback about 5 years ago, about 4 of the conference room chairs about 4 years ago and another 4 conference chairs about 2 years ago. We used the chairs daily or nearly so and the leather remains great looking. If you find a local company, ask them for samples of their work so you can be assured that you will be pleased with the end product. The cost was low enough that it was cost effective to do the repair rather than reupholster.

It can be done. I know it can, because it's what I do for a living. It does take patience, and the right materials. There are DIY progams out there that work. It'll take some research, though, like any other DIY project. BTW, leather is a "fabric" - no, "material" - yes, "that can last for generations." I've worked on 100 year-old leather, and that covers several generations. For what it's worth.

Water took off leather dye?

My husband and I purchased 2 red leather recliners almost 4 years ago. They have not held up at all. If I take a cloth with a little water the red dye starts coming off. Where my husband rests his head it has changed color - so it looks much darker where his head was. We called the store 2-3 years ago regarding this and they contacted the company which would not do anything about it. When we first purchased the chairs one of the seats had a dark spot on it which they replaced. Just not happy with this purchase at all especially for what we paid for them. Some areas on the arms of chair are turning darker as well.

I haven't dyed leather before but Leather Magic makes products for Dyeing leather. I've used this company's cleaning products before.

They also have authorized servicer list on their website that may lead you to a professional leather restorer that may be able to do the job for you but it may be $$$.

Be cautious with analine dye. It makes leather..."not" look like leather. You will need to prepare the leather prior to dying. Also it can come out streaked rather than as original.

Suggest finding a farm supply or someone who works on saddles. They know the right solutions to use. May be difficult depending upon where you live. Or purhaps a shoe repair, if any still exist. Last would be an upholsterer working with leather..home or auto.

Link is a simple explanation. But I would still ask someone with ongoing experience. Your leather sounds worth saving.
