which wall to accent and what is too dark?

I am going for a cozy retreat type room to reduce stress in. I know what color swatch I want, but I don't know which shade is too dark. I am considering "basket beige" for the three walls with windows and "softer tan" for the southern wall. Here is a picture showing the trim color and the carpet. I am afraid the basket beige might be too dark.

Maybe it would look better on the southern wall, but I was afraid that putting the softer tan on the windowed walls would make them look even lighter and thus make the difference in colors too great.

I could use "macademia" for the accent color, but is one step darker even worth bothering? I don't want gloomy- just cozy.

I am also wanting to use the same two colors I pick in the office (smaller room, smaller windows, southern exposure, but with a covered porch) and in the master bedroom (windows on south and west sides) and master bath (one window on north side). SO, can I pick out two colors that will work in all lighting situations????

I looked at my color strips from SW. Both colors are pretty, but with all the light in that space, I think I would do the Basket Beige. You won't have that much wall space, from what I can tell, so it shouldn't feel too dark.

I don't see the point of doing one wall in another shade of beige in that room, tho. I don't think it will end up feeling like an accent wall, just that the light is playing differently with the Basket Beige because of the windows. And that will happen anyway.

As for picking two colors for all situations, it depends on how picky you are! LOL In the bedroom for sure, I wouldn't pick a wall color without picking bedding first. And I am not sold on the idea of two colors just to use two colors in every space. Maybe one color in the bedroom, and the other in the bath, for example. Or the darker one below a chair rail, and the other above. But one wall different in each room really would be an arbitrary decision, not taking into account the use of the space, the actual lighting, and the architecture that you might want to highlight.

Softer tan is pretty light so if basket beige is a shade darker, i'd go for it. I have softer tan in my kitchen and i love it.

I prefer accent walls to be those with no redeeming architectural features. If you want one wall to be a different color, I would choose the longest wall that has no windows, doors or a fireplace. If this isn't your furniture, then we can't suggest a color. Paint should work with the fabrics and textiles in a space. Bring those in, take fresh pix, and post as a new dilemma.

Jenna, the 'Well, duh' was a bit condescending, considering you have given people nothing to look at in an attempt to help you. How can we help you when we have no idea what the room looks like and where the sofa is? Celerygirl does AMAZING mock-ups for people when they supply pictures, so they can see how something will look. We don't know your colors, what your sofa looks like or what the wallpaper looks like. If someone came up to you and said, 'Accent wall.', wouldn't you ask them what they were talking about? Norwood, thanks for weighing in! Although not perfect, this design aesthetic allows me to do something unusual and still be within my budget. Doing the entire shower in hex is out of my budget and I’d rather do something than have a very boring shower. I think the inspiration photos look great and I think I can get close to that.

How much light do you get (windows are facing east? west? north? south?)? Is that large/long wall going to be the TV wall? I think with proper natural light and lighting, a dark wall can work, but otherwise I would stick with a subtle color difference between wall/trim in a NYC apartment.

Les917: I see your point about why do an accent wall in the same color. I guess because my office at work has one wall a darker color and I LOVE it, but it would be too much (dark and confining) if it was on all 4 walls. I really don't want to have two colors just for the sake of having them. I am looking to capture that cozy effect without getting too dark.
