Thoughts in how to display/frame this pillow case?

It's silk, from an ancestress of mine, maybe 20" square. It's too fragile to stuff and use as a display pillow with small children in the house. Thanks.

Any framer can help you with that; but is it of great value? You may want to make sure he uses the right adhesives and protective glass.

I am seeing burled walnut.

Not sure of its value other than sentimental. My great-grandmother embroidered her name right above "Yale" and its got her classmates on there as well.

I have a food mill and the jelly strainer. The food mill is a pass-along from my sister, the jelly strainer a minimal purchase. You should be able to find one on Amazon or at your local hardware store for in the neighborhood of $8-$9, a box of 2 additional bags (that you may not need) for $5. The jelly strainer isn't required, just a bit easier. For years I used cheese cloth or muslin in either a colander, or as a self made bag of a square tied with twine and hanging from a cabinet knob over a bowl. With the strainer frame and bag, I can strain juice and still get something out of my upper cabinet without slinging juice across the counter ;) A simple thing.

How shall I frame/display these botanical prints plus other art?

Hi, Val, just thought I'd show you the botanicals I've framed, just to give you more ideas, but it sounds like you have it almost all figured out. I have enjoyed watching your room come alive! I got all my botanicals off Ebay too & decided to do ready-made frames and had custom mats cut to make the prints fit in my frames. I used 16x20 frames with inserts of 10x13 openings. My botanicals are slightly smaller than the insert, so to fill it out, I used black mats on all of mine & I love how it makes them look more important. That touch of black all around really makes the botanicals stand out, I think. Whether this is proper placement or not, I have no idea, but it worked for my eye. I have framed several sets of these in this same way & will show you all the pics of how I've used the black mat exactly the same way. These were standard black frames from Michaels & came with the ivory mats inside with the glass & these had a black border built in on the inner ivory mat already, I just added another custom black mat to fill in the space that I needed to fill to fit my botanical. I know you can't see all the details on these pics, but hopefully this will help you some: This one is open frames from Hobby Lobby & I bought standard mats & again added the custom black inner mat so the botanicals would fit. HL does a great job with adding mats & glass & very reasonable. These gold frames came from Tuesday AM & they had the ivory mats with gold edge already in them, along with the glass. All I did was again add the black inner custom mat & it was done. I found this to be the most cost effective way to frame these odd-shaped botanicals.

Using embroidered pillow cases in a quilt?

What about incorporating the pieces of embroidered pillowcases into some crazy quilt blocks - not the silk and velvet type of CQ - using quilters' cotton to bring out the colors in the embroidery. I can see a lovely table runner for your dining room table with bits of the embroidery added. Using crazy quilt blocks would mean you could make the patch whatever size was needed to include the handwork. You could also use some old lace and unique buttons too. Teresa

Here they are Linelle - the *fabric* they are stitched to is actually a fabric matte board that just wasn't cut into a traditional matte form. There are tiny stitches that are hidden in the design that hold them to that. I wanted them to relate to each other but also be different, hence the different color matte fabric but same frames. Ii think you could do something very similar with your pillows cases. Are the backs anything special? If you tack them as is to a matte fabric would they be to thick or could you remove the fronts from the rest of the case? You could also use a deeper framing - almost like a shadow box if they are too thick to look right with a regular frame. The molas have some dimension to them but not much - your pillows may be thicker.

I would get or make a pillow form, not very thick and cut it in half so there is a flat side. When it is mounted to the backer board it would look like the drawing below. Then have the pillowcase mounted over it so it had dimension. A good framer will be able to line the form with some non acidic paper to protect the pillowcase and frame it right.

Very pretty pillow and what a great heirloom. Please show us when you get it framed, however you do it.

Yes, you'll want this done right since it is such a unique heirloom. Ask round maybe at the well known antique stores in your area for a framer they work with or research framers who have been in business a long time. You could also contact the Art dept at your local colleges. Don't trust this to Michael's.

Don't worry, I learned the hard way with Michael's. I work in an art dept and now know two very good framers. I should definitely have this lightly stuffed for fullness? It won't look odd to see a framed pillow? :)

It seems to me that you have two separate issues regarding this item:

1) Doing what's necessary to conserve it correctly to prevent damage;

2) Choosing a frame to have it mounted in for display.

For the first, may I suggest consulting a textile conservator? I have had a good experience with one concerning the cleaning and mounting of an early 19th c sampler that belongs to my DH's family. She does not do the actual framing part, but prepares the item for the framer to work with by mounting it correctly..

I really liked working with her and she gave me excellent advice.
