At some point the dilution will be too great for the vehicle (acrylic resin) to form a durable film, and the paint will be too-easily worn off. My instincts tell me that a 50/50 water/paint ratio is within the danger zone.
I wonder why they did not suggest thinning the paint with acrylic glaze medium, which is essentially pure vehicle (acrylic resin), which seems to me would give a similar effect without making the paint a) runny, or b)wear-prone. I'd suggest maybe a 2parts paint, one part each of glazing medium and water. It may still be runny, but you should end up with something much closer to paint.

I had Cord in our previous home. I will post pixs if you want to see it in action.

IMO it's better to paint 1st coat 100% second coat dilute w/ water to give a softer effect. The reason using water instead of glaze is because glaze would add sheen to the finished product, whereas water will retain the flat finish. I read a/b this technique on a magazine but never tried it myself.

I often mix glaze w/ low sheen (satin) paint for faux finish but if you wish to retain the flat finish I don't know if glaze would work.

I'll stop after this, but glazing media is made in gloss, satin, matte, etc., depending on the desired result.

Sombreuil: that's good to know. Most of the faux book recommend glaze w/ sheen product == I never tried it w/ flat before.

bellaflora that is exactly the look I'm hoping for. I know you said it is very changeable, but would you describe it as tan, green, yellow or ...? I tried String and found it too yellowy and am hoping cord won't have the same problem.

I love your (old) home and furnishings.

A friend of mine is in the process of painting her stairwell in Cord, and to me, it doesn't look yellow or green at all. Also, her painter actually had the color mixed in C2 paint because he said it is more durable than the F&B finishes.

In the 2nd picture, if you look into the back of the dining room, that's as golden as it can get. As I said, light makes a huge difference in how the color appeared.

Cord is darker than string. it's a tannish sandy yellow w/ lots of grey.-- not bright cheery French provencal yellow.

I can mail you a painted chip if you'd like. That way you can see the actual color before going for the sample pot. I ran out of the actual paint otw I would've sent you a wet sample.

My SIL copied F&B color & while the match comes out exact it doesn't have the depth of the color. Go figure.

She copied light stone & Vert de Terre. In my house light stone change from yellow to green very dramatically but the copied version only show tannish yellow and does not change to green.

Thank you so much bellaflora. I really appreciate your talking the time to give me the info. I'm liking it more and more - your description of it sounds like just what I'm looking for. I have got the little paint chip. I think I will order a sample pot. It's not too expensive and then I can do a large sample board (and I'll have that cute little container :-)

Now I just have to get dh out of town for a day or two so I can paint. I believe his exact words were "we are NOT painting this room again!".
