CL Dining Set: Help Me Decide

Hi,

I've been meaning to re-introduce myself--I used to participate a bit here several years ago. We have recently relocated and downsized, and are in the midst of a major remodel to a 60s brick ranch. The remodel includes keeping a smallish

dining room that opens to a step down living room that I plan to use as a sitting room/ library. I am replacing most of my furnishings (traditional/mahogany) and moving towards "casual elegance". I love Phoebe Howard, and am also drawn to lots of rooms on Cote de Texas (minus the crystal and fussiness). Anyhow, I've been looking for a round, pedestal dining room table that can be expanded with leaves and just found this on the local CL. It is Baker, refinished, and at $1,300 is a very good deal I think(6 chairs, 2 leaves). Does this read as formal to you, or could it work in a relaxed setting (I'm thinking linen skirted slipcovers on the chairs). Sorry I don't have any pictures of my spaces yet--the rooms are still under construction. Here's the table with 2 of the chairs:

WMA, it is gorgeous!! I think it's perfect for a casual elegance style.. the chairs are unfussy and the lines are classic. You could use slipcovers or chair the seat covers.. but no matter what, it will be stunning wherever you put it!

I absolutely love my Maytag Bravos washer/dryer set. The washer is an HE toploader. I have the best of both worlds -- low water usage, huge capacity (I can wash a king-size comforter and 2-3x the laundry I could wash in my former washer), I can soak clothes (very important to me), the high spin speed spins so well, laundry dries quickly, and I can add clothes as long as the Add A Garment light is on. Because of the huge capacity, I only wash 3-5 loads max per week, whereas I used to wash 7-10 loads per week. This has made an appreciable difference in our utility bills.

sending karma... sending karma... I went and picked up this lovely dresser tonight. She had a sticker on it for 50 OBO and forgot to remove it so I got it for 50 instead of the 75 and the picture DOES NOT do it justice. I absolutely love it!

I think your dining room chair options are a great idea. I am not sure I understand the curtains in the dining room where you can see the stairs going up on the side. Does that separate the LR from the DR? You asked for other suggestions and mine would be to take them down. As for the LR, I don't think it'd be too much wicker for either of those chairs. I think the first one looks nicer or more contemporary. The 2nd one looks more grandmotherly or porch-y IMHO. Depending upon the proximity of LR to DR you might consider whether this is too much, I couldn't tell but otherwise I think the style and texture would look nice with your sofa, art, colors, etc. Trim - I think black would be a preference thing. It would look fine, maybe make the rooms look more dark - you seem to have a lot of darker accessories so depending on the look you are after... The white looks fine as-is. You could try the 'cut out black construction paper and tape it on the trim to check it out' before painting technique (or hope for a photoshopper to help). Good luck - they are nice rooms!

I think your CL set is cute. It fits your kitchen well too. I wondered if you painted your cabinets yourself? It can be kind of a big job painting furniture, so that has to be taken into consideration. What color were you thinking of painting the set? My thoughts are, to consider very carefully what you really want to see in your kitchen. While I like the look of mis-matched colors in some settings, that look doesn't work in everyone's home. But as for painting the set, why not? It's a good set but not a fine antique right? So paint if you like the look. I think that people forget sometimes that wood furniture gets painted all the time. Just look through the pages of Pottery Barn or Crate & Barrell or any of the other venues for buying dining room stuff. We see distressed white and distressed black and sage green and red and brown, etc. I think painting can be a waste if you have fine wood but not so much with just the 'average joe' piece of furniture. And how often do you see someone pick up a Pottery Barn catalog and say "Oh my gosh!! Why did they ruin that nice sideboard by painting it?" Well, never. People seem to only object when they hear the term "Painting wood". Anyway, go looking at fabric and paint and get all your ducks in a row to see what you really want to do in there. Perhaps just use some RAF on the chairs and lay out your fabric on the seats to see how that would look first. Red

It's Biedermeier, so it's kinda formal, but it is very spare and works with a lot of different things. I think it's a bargain and I would grab it.

A beautiful, quality Baker table in a classic design-- buy it!

(We bought a used Baker pedestal table from the 1940s/50s
about a decade ago. The price seems right. We have loved our table.)

I love it. The lighter color and smaller scale lend a casual look to the set and adding flirty linen seat slipcovers to the chairs will move the set in that direction, too. Gorgeous. Great price.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your input Pal, as I was trying to figure out what the style was. The owner just called and I am planning to look at it today. I wasn't really expecting to purchase furniture yet--I was going to wait until the project was finished--but this seems like too good of an opportunity. I'll keep you posted. . .

Well, I bought it! It was truly stunning in person--the owners bought it at an estate sale about 12 years ago and had it completely refinished. The table has been protected with pads since they've owned it, and there was barely a scratch on it. The chairs are very comfortable--they were reupholstered as well. I do plan to have some linen box pleat skirted seat covers made. It comes with two 21" leaves, so it opens to over 90". Without the leaves it's 50" diameter, which is a good every day size for my room.

It's definitely Baker Furniture--I saw the brass plate under the table top.

I paid their full price--$1,300. They weren't open to offers.

I found the same table (without chairs) on Ebay. It sold for $1,500. Mine appears in much better condition.

I'm picking it up next Saturday. Just need to find a place to store it while we finish the remodel. Now I can start thinking about a chandelier--I'll be back asking for help with that
