The marble gets my vote, it looks more interesting. I don't care for a uniform pattern or color. I love your mudroom and kitchen, Beautiful!!!

I love the look of the marble but it will scratch and etch easily.

I would also visit your local stone supplier and look at remnants.

pps7- These stones are actually from remnants, as they won't cut up a slab for such a small counter. I'm not too worried about etching as all that we will put on top of it will be mail and my pocketbook etc. Scratching is definitely something to think about. I should test the sample I have. thanks for the advice!

I prefer the top choice because it has cream in it, so brings a little of the cabinet door colour into the equation.

Any reason you arenâÂÂt doing the same one as in the adjacent kitchen? It appears that the cabinets are the same, hardware as well. I love what is in the kitchen, not as fond of either of these.

Another alternative for that kind of space would be a stainless steel top.

Great mail room/mudroom!

les- The cabinets in the kitchen are very creamy a bit yellowish. The cabs in the mudroom are SW princeton white(a basic off white that was the wall and trim color throughout the house). The hardware is different as well(ORB in kitchen and a more brown coppery tone on the mudroom) We have A LOT of the giallo veneziano granite in the kitchen and I felt adding more to the mudroom would be a bit too much. I am also limited to remnants found in our local stoneyards so not much to choose from without being charged an arm and a leg!

The marble. I had that on a dresser top that was, sadly, dropped on the floor during our last move :(. It was a lovely stone and like you say, it will hold mail and simple things so no need to worry about etching or whatnot. Mine was on an antique piece and out in our living room being abused by our 2 young sons and showed no signs of wear (the wood looked more used after they were born, but the top stayed pristine).
Of course, I do not recommend dropping it on the floor, lol.....

Yes, your hardware is ORB, but look at the kitchen - what color are your appliances?

Hmm, raises another thought - what about a copper countertop in the mudroom to go with the hardware there? Could be very cool.

I like the granite best.

I'm also for the granite...seems like that wouldn't compete with the kitchen pattern and yet would go well with the ORB and cushion...beautiful mudroom!

Looks like it's a split decision so far(5 to 4)...

Les- the copper idea is even more intriguing(I am a huge copper fan)...hmmm... my only fear is that it would have sharp corners and with 2 preschoolers in the house(and potentially more) and the location of the counter it might be a little dangerous.

I like the coffee brown granite. I think the contrast between it and the light cabinetry will look great. It will also echo the dark cushion on the mudroom bench. It's hard to tell from the image how large the pattern on the marble is relative to the counter space. Since it's a relatively small top, I think the coffee brown will look better.

Just did a brief online search for copper counters... They are EXPENSIVE(2-3x the marble). Sadly, I don't think we're going to be able to do that...

I like the smaller figuring of the granite in your small space. The things that will inevitably arrive on the surface will be enough visual business, I'd think.

Your kitchen is dreamy. Do you need a full-time live-in cook, by any chance...? Oh, wait, I probably shouldn't leave my very D DH, even for your kitchen...

My vote is for the granite as well. Your mud area is warm and cozy and the granite feels that way too : )

Thanks everyone for the kitchen and mudroom compliments! The rest of the house is still a work in progress(empty DR and LR) I swear I need that designing for the sexes guy so we can finish furnishing our house! DH and I had a big spat the other day regarding a piece of artwork for the DR that I don't think will match what I'm planning for the room, but he loves...(It'll prob be a future post on the forum...LOL )
