Just finished daughter's bedroom for her b-day!

Hubby & I decided to show daughter her bedroom today (even though it's about 9 days until her 20th birthday) She LOVED it! We still need to make her custom rug & sand & paint the bench hubby made for under her window, but everything else was finished. All the pics are on RMS so please look at them there.

Oh that is beautifully done! Your daughter is one lucky gal. I especially like the bedding you chose, the palm tree pics, and the round mirror. You are a terrific mom!!!

I'm very late to the opinion party here, but I just wanted to point out that I think it's wonderful to partner with our children on decorating their rooms. Letting them experiment with color, helping them with furniture placement and other design elements ... I think essentially it's really helping to develop the inner decorator in each of them! Think how many adults are afraid to paint anything other than white -- would life be different if their moms & dads had encouraged color exploration in their own homes and rooms? Last year, before loading some gorgeous Art Deco furniture we bought off Craigslist into our then 10-y.o. daughter's room, I talked to her about how the yellow that was on the walls (which she chose) just didn't work with the light bird's eye maple furniture. (Truly, it was going to be a terrible combo). We talked about potential colors and we went to the paint store. She went straight to BM French Lilac as her one and only choice. I, of course, picked out several other paint chips for variety and home we went. Well, we ended up with her first, instinctive choice and the room is just gorgeous. It better be, because that furniture is never going anywhere. Heavy doesn't even begin to describe it! LOL Anyway, I love that my daughter loves her room, and that she chose the paint. I never had that chance when I was a kid!

Thank you! Natesgram, the curtains were ordered from an Etsy shop - sources are listed at bottom of article. You can look it up by her name. They are lined, and can be used on a rod, but she wanted to use clip rings. it's a Waverly fabric, light weight. We actually used tableclothes for the curtain fabric in the nursery - but had them lined. They are SO heavy. But even so, she added blackout liners behind them so he sleeps better. Someone said something about the curtain rods - Target, their brand I believe. Same finish she used in nursery, but has different finials.

Bella - your daughter's room is so pretty! Does she like having a princess room? I would love to replace the ceiling fan in my DD's room with a chandy, but we do use the fan during the hot summer nights. Maybe I could find a pretty antique looking desk fan instead. Mitch - I have no idea who to call for an estimate. We have a finish carpenter that we're going to use for trim and he comes with great references, but I'm not sure if finish carpenters actually build these types of cabinets/shelving. I'm uncomfortable just calling someone blind, since I had an unpleasant experience having a cabinet made (doors aren't flush, don't close properly, etc.) I was hoping it wouldn't cost more than $1500 or so, since they'd stay with the house and we've invested too much money already on a house that we intend to resell w/in 5 or 6 years! I guess I could recoup some $$ by selling her antique furniture and it would save so much space though. I really want to move her play kitchen and store out of my living room and into her own room! If anyone has any references in the SoCal area, I'd appreciate the info!

well, here you already know she does like to sit at a table, given she chose dining table and not her bed while in school. And she did voice her desire to have a dedicated space to work. Luckily the room is big enough to accommodate it. Her current desk is too small for studies for sure..it's a nice space to write a letter maybe, a postcard, a check.. small things. Not enough for spreading out, doing hours worth of work. We have a similar desk..I mean with drawers on the side..and bigger at that and not angled..and even I found it too restricting for real work. As for my DD she banished it and bought something from IKEA (that doesn't fit her room in terms of style and makes me sad lol), so she can work there. she's past college..she was applying to graduate schools. one doesn't need text books for that at all-still hours of work. and if you ask me she could do so in her brother's room-he has a huge desk and is currently away in college. But she wanted to be in her own room.) Your daughter will sit at her bed from time to time, almost everybody does, to a different degree. Yet it's still college, and it's a lot of work. Maybe she needs mostly surface, minimum drawers situations..just some drawers. Or maybe some organizers like a very short hutch. Or maybe none at all like this glass desk you show, or Parsons style mentioned above. Go together to a store (IKEA or others) so she can try several desks..Of course you want to give her pretty cohesive space. And possibilities. And you do base this not only on your-very natural-desires, but on what she's been saying quite a long time too, I see here quite a good fit between what you'd want and what she thinks she needs.

Everything turned out great and is beautiful! It must be a lot of fun for her to get her own sophisticated bedroom now. Love that sparkly little chandy : )

Tell me about this RMS website. Is it a photo hosting site, do you have your own account like photobucket, or do you upload photos & they stay there forever? I've been roaming around on the site and now can't find where I started. Great stuff there.

Beautifully done room, though I didn't take time to look at all SEVENTEEN pictures! LOL. I'm sure you're daughter is over the moon about it. It's very sophisticated. She may never leave! That may have been the idea, huh?

marti8a: Rate My Space is part of HGTV. It is a place people can upload their photos of rooms they decorated or rooms they need help with & get rated & comments from the online viewers. The photos do stay on the site (not sure how long, but some of mine from 2 yrs ago are still on there)
justgotabme: She really is thrilled with it! She even invited over a newly ex-boyfriend to see it. She said she wanted to show it off. She in fact said, "I'm gonna live here forever" LOL! She's kidding though, once she's done with nursing school in a couple yrs she will be buying her own place. Then I'll get to help her decorate that!Fun Fun!

witmom: The aqua & white damask is the sheets. Bought it from Overstock.com (see link below)
Also bought the white duvet cover from Overstock.

Oh & I forgot to mention we made the padded headboard.

Very pretty grown-up room. Once she is on her own, I can see this also working well as a guest room. Love the little chandy lamp. She is one lucky girl.

Valinsv: Yes it would be a pretty guest room but she will probably take everything with her when she moves out in a couple yrs. I may just recreate it though when she moves as my guest room.
