Sounds like the perfect opportunity to learn to use the power tools! :) It wouldn't be too hard, just make sure and tape the cuts to prevent splintering.

anjismith..Lets say you want 3" off, start by cutting off 1",if that goes well yeah !! If not all is not lost. You can then take it somewhere to get them cut.

Maybe once your husband gets a look at you with the power tools he'll give in.
I say go for it with the power tools..You can also practice on a piece of scrap wood.

What height do you need it? I'm guessing this one is bar ht and you need it counter height? Maybe we can help you find something similar that's the right height for you.

Wow, thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, they cost more than what I want to spend. Would a handsaw not cut it? (No pun intended).

I don't think you would get a good cut with a hand saw...

Get an estimate for having the legs cut professionally. Show it to your DH and let him know you have it scheduled to be done........that usually motivates mine!!!!!

A hand saw would work under certain conditions. One being to use it with this miter box from Lowe's($5)or one like it. By keeping the hand saw in the slots you are guaranteed a straight cut as long as you are able to keep the wood from shifting positions. It comes with some plastic dowels that fit into the holes which line the bottom of the miter box. You simply insert one into a hole on either side of the leg and this keeps it from shifting. Hope this helps!

Followup:

DH's family came to visit so DH put them to work. DH and FIL beat their chests, grunted, kicked me out of the room (I was trying to give input), and.....*drum roll*.... cut the legs too short!!!!!!!!! If they weren't my chairs in my kitchen, I wouldn't be able to stop laughing! But oh, my beautiful chairs! Now they're stumpy chairs! GARRGH!!! MEN!!!

Maybe you can put some casters on them to bring them back up to the right height? Poor you!

If you saved the pieces that were cut off, they can probably be glued back on if the tapering is neglible at that far down on the leg. I'd use a small dowel also inside each piece before gluing to make it stronger, but this sounds like you need to find a friend who does woodworking or take it up yourself. Then with sanding and paint or stain matching, you'd be surprised at how well it might hide the original cut. Of course, then you'd have to cut them to the height you really wanted, but for beautiful stools, it would be better than stumpy ones.

So sorry about the men and their tools. You just have to look a little deeper to see that their hearts were in the right place....ok, ok...a lot deeper.
