Best treatment of a vaulted ceiling in child's room,

Grandchild's room is a converted attic with an 8 on 12 vaulted ceiling. It is long and about 12' wide. How to light it? She is 2.5 years old and has two twin beds at the end. I'm thinking maybe some sort of light down the center beam (string lights?) Or, maybe a paper lantern instead of a bedside table? All suggestions are appreciated. And, thanks so much for all suggestions!

A paper lantern is not safe for a child's room. Are you trying to think of something fun or something functional?

I am probably not the one to give advice, but I went to ikea and they have very cute flower shape lights that hang on the wall. I bought three for her bed area, they give off a nice soft light, just enough to read stories by. What about a nice chandelier for the middle of the ceiling, there are some that are totally precious
and girly.

I agree about consulting an architect or a designer who can work up a scale drawing including perspectives. That said, the ~ 8 foot ceiling was the standard for decades (and still is in much construction), and people have been perfectly content in reasonably sized rooms with 8 foot ceilings. I think the need for extra tall ceiling heights, particularly these near double height spaces, is grossly overstated in modern architecture. I live in a building with 14' ceilings and 23 foot (approximate length) parlors. This is a Very high ceiling. The floor I lived on with the 10 foot ceilings was a much more human scale for an interior, and 8.5 - 9 would have been adequate too, without the ornamental ceilings.

What is the best lighting in a breakfast room with a vaulted ceiling? We are considering cove with indirect lighting all around the room at a 9’ height with height of the ceiling center at approximately 14’. Or should we install recessed gimbles around the vaulted ceiling midway between 9’ wall and 14’ vault. We also have a chandelier hanging over the table in this room. If gimbals are suggested, should we consider 2” or 4”? Does anyone have experience with RAB or WAC and appropriate lumens for this ceiling height? Thank you

Here is an update for anyone curious to what we did. Before photo: After photo: We used the Vidga system (8 tracks) from Ikea and the corner piece. It is ONE CONTINUOUS TRACK all connected together. The brackets are attached at various points and do not interfere with the curtains movement. We used the Gunrid curtains which come in a pair, so we have one panel leftover. (There are two panels in the corner.) The grand total: $262.00 USD without tax. Sorry you were affected by Ian and having to deal with unplanned major renovations. We evacuated, but were lucky that our area had minimal damage. Personally, I would remove all those bulkheads. People design kitchens in rooms with vaulted ceilings all the time and manage lighting and hoods with no issues. You might consider hiring an independent kitchen designer and not one that works for your contractor.

Paint the ceiling like the sky, blue with fluffy clouds, and the hang large decorative butterflies from fishing line from the ceiling at different heights. You could faux paint some birds there as well.

I saw a model home once with a valuted ceiling for a boys room and it was decorated like the masts of a sailing ship. It was spectacular.

I'm not a mother (but I am an aunt to 6 kids) so I guess take my ideas with a grain of salt. I'd go with some sort of adult lighting which complements the space (perhaps one hanging fixture, or a row of them on the beam?) And, add in some table lamps to make it cozy. I would think the main goal would be to make it nice and cozy for a small child.

My view is that the decor should be functional and should not have to be changed out as the child grows. You can bring in the "fun" stuff with linens and other accessories, rather than getting a bunch of stuff a fickle child might not even like down the line (or appreciate at age 2 1/2) and which you'll just end up getting rid of.

Then again, I have never really understood decorating children's rooms or nurseries in strongly "child-like" or baby colors and themes. ;-)

Thanks to Cindyloo, maid o cliff, dgmarie and lizzie nh. All your suggestions are useful. I really like the idea of painting like the sky and I wish I had seen the room with the sailing masts. I very much appreciate the reminder to be safe for children. And lastly, lizzie, aunt of six!, you are right. Children do grow up before you know it and then you are "redecorating again. I posted this query for my daughter in law so I am sending these suggestions to her. If anyone is still following this, please note the apex of the ceiling is quite low so if we hang anything there it will have to be on a very short chain to avoid hitting grandchild's father's head. My apologies for my delayed response. I'm in the midst of a major remodel. Thanks you all so much for your suggestions.
