Garage walls.....Sheetrock or ?

I have one wall in my garage that doesn't have sheetrock or insulation. I was going to buy insulation to keep it warmer in the MN winters but was thinking that maybe I would like walls that are not sheetrock. One idea was inexpensive wood boards painted or stained.

Any other ideas?

We used sheets of luan plywood over the insulation in the garden shed. We have a wall a/c unit and a small refrigerator in there. Dh added a few sheets of metal pegboard above his workbench and on another wall for garden tools.

I guess it depends on how you use your garage. In ours, we sheetrocked the whole thing, but installed some metal shelving units that we backed with pegboard. The units are free-standing, so one side backs to the door we enter in (side door). We can hang coats, dog leashes, grocery bags, etc on it. Another wall we put a very large white board so DH could keep notes on it.

Wow all of your homes look so nice. We are at the basement stage and having some problems already. Our contractor did not install the form a drain correctly and the bleeders disconnected under the poured concrete. Then to top it off the block company drove over our new footings and smashed them plus our form a drain. It has to be completely re-done before we can move forward. I hope everyone else is having a wonderful month!! I know we can get over this hump. Has anyone else had bad luck so early in their build?

$400 is a great price if it includes parts. I just did mine, and it was 2 walls as well, the ceiling and front wall were already done. Cost me about $200 in insulation because 1 bag of batt wasn't quite enough to do it all (have leftover). About another $100 in sheetrock, mud, tape, screws, etc. That was just the first day Since then I have probably spent another $50 or so. Oh, and I already had most of the tools needed. If you don't have those you can probably figure another another $50 - $75 for all the drywall tools, you'll need a good cordless drill if you don't have one. The list goes on. Give the dude $400 and be done with it because I guarantee you'll have $400 in it before you even buy the paint.

Funky - The wall between the kitchen and laundry is structural and likely cannot can't be altered to create access to the back corner cabinet, but that's otherwise a great solution. I think the hang up with putting the range on that wall is that it only allows for about 12 inches of counter to the right of the range at a potentially high traffic area from backyard/garage for 4 little kids. Isn't it 80" from wall to door? If the corner cabinet for the Ikea kitchen isn't used but a blind corner instead, that should leave 24" for counter, 3" or so for fill to allow the oven door to open without bonking cabinet handles, and 30" for range which equals 57". Which should leave 23" for a cabinet to the right of the range which should be ample for safety. A 21" cabinet with a couple of inches of filler and it's a done deal. A 24" wide alteration for drawers in the laundry would be a very minimal header and wouldn't cost much. However, the loss of that space and drawers in the laundry room wouldn't be a huge loss in the scheme of things so if that wall is done and they don't want to spend it to allow for the drawers, that would make sense to me.

$100 is very very inexpensive for a comprehensive audit. but it is what it is. the good news is the rooms are sealed at wall/ceiling. usually in homes with ceiling moldings, the gap at wall to ceiling is covered up, & not sealed. so you are one step ahead of the game there. in home efficiency the importance of the location of the air leakage counts. most efficient is to seal the air barrier between living & attic space. you are good with the leakage site described above, and having no recessed lights. second most efficient place to seal/insulate is the floor. this is your air barrier between crawlspace & conditioned space. when the house was built, chances are the sole plate of the exterior walls was not sealed to the subfloor. again..a tiny leakage site that quickly adds up to a lot of leakage, given the amount of wall area. ideally sill seal or caulk would have sealed sole plate to subfloor...how to retrofit now? caulk top of floor molding to wall, and bottom of molding to floor (if not carpet) or take floor moldings up, caulk & re-install moldings. if you have pets...you do not want to caulk moldings to floor as the caulk will always collect pet hair. (this I know from personal experience...) when you talk of feeling cold air circulating (in first post) where do you feel the air? at your feet? shoulder height? more details needed. but back to floors over crawlspaces...no insulation in the floor? is the cold you feel from the floor area? post more details & we will walk you through some basic air sealing. drop me an email & I'll share info from lsu ag center's study on air sealing floors of raised homes. we have found that the best way to air seal & insulate floors is spray foam insulation. closed cell...3". makes a world of difference. pricy, but you air seal & insulate in one step. having done several homes where we manually sealed holes, then insulated with fg batts & came back on the bottom of the joists with 1" cc foam sheathing...it is the same $$ as spray foam. and a lot less labor intensive. in the meantime here is some excellent air sealing info from southface inst. http://www.southface.org/default-interior/documents/airsealingkeypoints.pdf best of luck

I think you need to check your building codes. Where I live you are required to have fire rated drywall.

natal, thanks for the idea on the luan. I just googled it and I think it looks like a nice option. I just love your garden shed. Did you ever paint your rockers? Also, thanks for the link.

pesky, I like the idea of pegboard in the gargage. It would be much better than throwing some of my small tools in the junk drawer. I would have never thought of a white board! You have me thinking of chalkboard paint in one spot. It would be great to keep notes for my gardening projects.

clt, I know that two of the walls and ceiling were sheetrocked with fire rated drywall due to the building codes here so I won't touch them. The house was built over 25 years ago so I should probably check on this wall to see if anything has changed. Thanks for posting. Good information for others who are considering a garage "accent" wall. (I assume I might be in the minority :) It all started with that Granny Smith Apple colored door.

Kelly, sadly no. Rockers aren't painted, swing isn't painted, and I've added wicker set to the list ... also unpainted. :(

My SIL and her DH used pegboard to finish several of their garage walls in a former house. They liked it so much that when they moved to a house with drywall finished garage walls, they installed standoffs to be able to put up more pegboard to hang their tools.

We used a John Hardie product in our main level garage. We painted. It's washable (although we have never washed it). Our GC had it in his workshop/garage. The base trim was installed a bit off the floor so water would not hit. It has a stucco look to it, don't recall the exact name. First picture is really yellow due to lights. :-/

If you want to install pegboard or beadboard or whatever in your garage, you must sheetrock it first and apply it over the sheetrock. Allisons Hardie material also works, as it is fire resistant. Yes, it's a fire code issue. The garage generally contains containers of gasoline and other flammable substances and the idea is to keep the fire away from the wood studs for as long as possible. Thus no direct wood to wood contact as a finished surface.

OrchidOCD, thanks for the input. Sounds like pegboard is the way to go.

Allison, my gosh, your garage door is nicer than my front entry door :) I am definitely going to look at James Hardie products. Makes sense that the baseboard should be higher for me since I drag lots of snow on the car tires in the winter. Also, I love the storage unit to the right of the door. Great idea.

Thanks. We had a basement garage (aka lots of things stored) for 20 years and I/we want this one to stay cleaner/nicer. We're in/out a lot during the day with dogs (there is a chain link kennel in the right corner - can barely see the start of it - for our Lab if we need to contain him). Lower level single garage (storage only) is a mess, but only because it's DH area not mine. ;D
