Opinions on Bruce Pre-Finished Hardwoods and alternatives.
Comments (3)Thanks Dan! I especially appreciate the disclosure. I have to admit to sheer ignorance when it comes to pre-finished hardwood, I don't know how the manufacturers differentiate from one another or even how the product lines differ. I know Bruce is carried at Home Depot, but with a lot of other things (say, plumbing), the big-box stores get a dumbed down or cheapened version of what you'd get at a supply store. Am I better off going to another distributor, would they have other, better lines from Bruce? Also - who would you say is Bruce's main competitor, just for comparison purposes. Comments (5)I just wandered over from the Kitchen and Bath forums to research this same question! We just took up the carpet and vinyl in the kitchen, dining, family, and living rooms as a part of a big remodel. Our GC steered us towards site built because he doesn't like the grooves in pre-finished and said that a lot of the pre-finished floors he's quoted end up costing almost the same as a site-built once you add everything up. He also said that it's not as easy to replace damaged boards as it seems. I was leaning towards site-built, but now I want to make sure I'm making the right decision. I'm planning on visiting some flooring stores this afternoon if the kids cooperate. I've heard good things about Kentwood's pre-finished. Let us know what you decide!...See MoreSite-finished vs. pre-finished hardwood floors?
Comments (23)Doesn't change my opinion either. With site finish you have a lot more control in the finish color with mixing and still have a chance to match... as someone said if it was done recently you might even have the formula, assuming your goal is to still try and match. My question to the good floor contractor is how they plan on handling the transition. In an ideal set up they would selectively remove some old planks and stagger in some new ones, sand flush, then finish, creating a seamless and undetectable transition. Since you don't have interest in refinishing the other spaces I'm unsure of all the options. If possible it'd be nice to not have a clunky threshold piece in the way....See MorePre-finished hardwood floors in kitchen - any regrets?
Comments (8)I have pre-finished hardwood in my kitchen (and entire house) that was installed about 18 months ago. So far there are no issues and no regrets. I just wipe up spills, go over the area with a damp cloth and then dry. Knowing my husband, I’m sure some stray ice cubes have melted, but they’ve left no evidence. I vacuum weekly or as needed, and use a bona mop about monthly. One thing I did do was buy new vacuum with a special soft brush designed for hardwood. The “hardwood setting” on my previous vacuum simply lifted the brush so it wouldn’t scratch the floors, but I felt like all I was doing was blowing around dirt and certainly not getting into crevices. There are pros and cons to all flooring, but one of the advantages with the pre finished is the strong seal that reportedly makes them somewhat more resistant to staining or discoloration. Prior to the hardwood I had tile for 23 years; sometimes it was really hard on my then much younger legs and back....See Morepineapplecake
