crown moldng w/ tongue & groove ceiling

Hi all, this is my first post. We just put a tongue & groove ceiling in a loft area of our home. The loft is used for a computer and reading room. The ceiling is stained a light oak. The molding hasn't been added yet, and we are considering crown molding. Should we paint the crow molding, or stain it? The ceiling is approx. 10 ft tall. The walls are an off white. We currently have carpet, but it is next to go, being replaced with a light oak floor. I have no problem painting the walls a slightly darker color, so the crown molding stands out in contrast, if painted molding is the way to go. I'm just not sure with the wood ceiling if we should stain or paint the molding.

I'd paint the crown the same color as your window trim and baseboard.

I would usually agree on painting the crown but you said your ceiling is stained? So it's wood? I don't know if I would paint the crown if that's the case. Do you have a picture?

Yes, they definately should have been closer to to the upper cabinets from what you describe. My kitchen installer marked the plan with the measurements that would make the lights center on each upper cabinet but be as close to the cabinet as possible. You want the light between you, standing at the counter, and the upper cabinet so you do not throw a shadow on the counter you are working at, which is what happens if the light is behind your head. Think of it this way, your base cabinets with counters are at least 25" deep (24" deep cabinets with 1"+ counter overhang. Your upper cabs are only 12" deep. You want the cans in that 12" space over the countertop. I had them put mine just a couple of inches beyond the upper cabinet. That way, even if I am bending my head forward or leaning over a little, none of the light is blocked and there is no shadow over the counter I am working at. UC lights are great for lighting the area under the cabinets, where the upper cabs cast a shadow. Using both, you would be amazed at the difference in lighting, and will end up with true "task" lighting with no shadows. I would think the areas on both sides of the range are prime work spaces that will need something. Even without upper cabs, if the lights are behind you, you are going to be working in shadow. Flurescent UC lights do not get hot at all. Even pucks or leds would help, although the pucks do get hot from what I understand, another reason I chose not to use them. Sue

This appears to habe been something I never would have thought of. I dissected out a few joints yesterday, taking care to see what the soft mud was all about. Turned out it itself was not soft - it was like a bubble underneath. We floated over a layer of paint that was evidently latex over oil and it is pulling away from the underlying layer. I suspect that the moisture in the mud was drawn into the latex layer, loosening it. It is not a problem except in the grooves where the mud was deeper. I know how to remove molding but that's only the start. Then you have to re-cope the corners (2-piece crown) and deal w/ the gaps created between the door jamb and casing. Just too much, and too much mess in a finished house. I relented and am laying 1/8" Masonite over the panelling. Easier to cut around molding, easier joints, much less mess. We roughed it up so it would look more like old plaster. It will look just fine. Thanks for your suggestions. Bill/Memphis

What color should I stain tongue and groove porch ceiling?

I am reading this thread and working on a porch ceiling too. I like this color and would love to know what is shown in the photo and what stain she decided to go with!! Any answers? The wood is pine and I’m leaning towards Golden Oak or possibly Mountain Ash by SW for a hint of gray. Let me know if anyone has suggestions!! Appreciate the help!

Doing this minimal detail in a commercial application while maintaining the continuous drywall as noted by RES above, we would have 2 options that I can think of: 1. Run a single board continuous above the ceiling. Apply a second layer of drywall that terminates just below the ceiling wit a J bead or similar. This adds thickness and cost to the walls but provides for a clean detail. 2. Reveal the wood slightly off of the wall, There are various aluminum reveal details that could be used that would cap both the wood and the gap between the wood and the wall. Or conversely a sheet of black painted aluminum could be installed before the ceiling is installed. Note also that this second requires your wood installer can get all of the boards cut to the exact same length.

A little background, which most would certainly help. Our house is 40+ years and has never been remodeled. It is in the NC mountains, and was originally built for a vacation residence. It wasn't built up to snuff years ago, and we are playing catch up. We added the tongue & groove ceilings, out of necessity, because the original ceilings were drop ceilings in some rooms, and some weird woven tile in other rooms. The ceilings we installed are tongue & groove wood, stained a light oak color. To begin with, the house had zero moulding, even around the windows. We will have to add moulding as we go. That's another subject for another day, but the windows are to be replaced also. Obviously, we have started from scratch. My husband & I are doing all the work ourselves, which slows down the progress. I just need to concentrate on one room at a time, or feel too overwhelmed. Currently, the loft is the project. I will post pictures when I'm able. I will try and post photos, so you have a better understanding.

We have a tongue and groove pine ceiling in our sunroom. We only used a narrow moulding to hide the edges of the wood, and we painted it the same color as the wall. Ours is a cathedral ceiling, but we didn't want a thick formal crown moulding. I think you could also stain it the same color as the ceiling.
