Does overstock.com charge sales tax? Any promos?

I'm contemplating buying my FR rug through overstock.com and am trying to see if it's in my budget.

Do they charge sales tax?

Also does anyone know any good promotions and/or coupons?

I noticed one on their site for 5% off plus free shipping if you open a VISA account. Another for $30 off orders over $500. Looks like the VISA option would be my best bet since the rugs I'm looking at are all in the $600-$700 range.

I bought a large shag area rug for under our coffee table from Overstock.com and I really like it. The shipping was quick, and there was no sales tax if I remember correctly. I think the shipping was something like 2.95 for Fed Ex. If you google *overstock coupons* you might find a code for a percentage off coupon too.

I rememberr they had a huge selection of rugs, and I found exactly what I was looking for. Good luck, and have fun looking!

Hint....Sigh up for their emails - just about everyday you get incentives.

I rec'd one today for take an add'l $20.00 off any purchase of $120 or more that ends at midnight.

Ok...California isn't in the lead on this. New York is. There was litigation in the NY Courts that led to what is known as their "Amazon Law" that lets NY force Amazon to collect NY sales tax by virtue of NY based third-party sellers having partnership agreements with Amazon. VT, MA, RI, IL, CO, GA, CT and now CA have since filed legislation to mimic what NY did. THIS DOESN'T mean the states can now compel remote sellers to collect their tax! It only applies where that seller has a partnership agreement with an in-state business pushing sales through their website. THAT said, we all owe the USE TAX. It's the law. I find it interesting that many of the same folks who rail about Democrats trying to raise taxes (which happens to be factually inaccurate) don't seem to care about breaking the law, resulting in budget deficits that leave states short of operating revenue that lead to discussions of the need to raise taxes! You can't complain about your kids getting a crappy education, the roads being bad, bridges failing, etc. if you don't pay the taxes you lawfully owe! That's as unpatriotic as you get. I find it hard to understand how the masses on the right fall for the complete ruse that they will somehow benefit from the Gov't giving tax breaks to the uber-wealthy and to Corporations who are buying those tax breaks with lobbying dollars. It's been proven to be bull time and again. Oil companies are reaping record profits while enjoying ridiculous tax breaks and shifting the burden of the shortfall to the rest of us! PLUS, we now have the privilege of perpetuating their ownership of the U.S. Government by our paying them $5.00/gallon! If you understand anything about investigative tactics in police work..."follow-the-money" almost always leads you back to the perpetrator. While there's plenty of blame to dole out on both sides of the aisle, it doesn't take a genius to figure out which major party is the prime offender. What can be said about this but wake up America! What happened to government for the people, by the people? The Constitution says "people" not "corporations!" As for the uncollected sales tax issue, there is an effort called the Streamlined Sales Tax Project aimed at encouraging Congress to lift the Supreme Court restrictions on requiring remote sellers to collect tax for the states in exchange for the states simplifying and making their laws more uniform so that it doesn't cost businesses so much to comply! Unsurprisingly, the bill continues to stall due to opposition by the majority of Republicans who don't want to be "perceived" as levying new taxes even though the taxes are already legally due and are just being criminally ignored. Thankfully this year there is some Republican support. Rep. Senator Mike Enzi of WY is cosponsoring the bill this session with Senator Richard Durbin of IL. Until REAL campaign finance reform is adopted and publicly funded political campaigns are MANDATORY and Corporate lobbying $ prohibited, this country will NOT be truly free.

Well, as I said above, if you're sure the sales tax at your delivery address is 6%, then you should call Sam's Club back and ask for someone in the billing department who has some authority. I'm pretty sure they'll refund you the difference. It's possible their software just charges the highest rate for the state but they're not supposed to do that. Also, the amount charged is supposed to be based on the delivery address, not the billing address. That's one of the issues that I had in the past - I sent a gift to NH (no sales tax) but was charged MA sales tax because that was my billing address. I was first told that their computer did it correctly but when I insisted that they were wrong, they put me on hold for a few minutes and came back and said they would refund me the difference. If the internet sales tax bill passes, merchants will have to deal with HUNDREDS of different tax rates, not just 50, because of different local taxes and the fact that some states have different tax rates on different items - e.g. clothing, food.

Just to be clear, definitionally, what you're dealing with is a price minimum, which is set by contract between the appliance store and the manufacturer, not a price control. This isn't collusion between some stores to keep the price up artificially or undercut the standard price to force other players out of business, which would be illegal.. It's a level playing field because all the stores have to adhere to the same contractual minimum. While I was shopping for my kitchen, I did find variations of a few hundred dollars above the price floor, between different sellers. Most appliance stores will give a builders/designers discount to the trade. Many will allow the builder to give his license number but have you do the actual transaction and get the discount. This makes things more convenient all around.

To answer the original question, no you can't get a break on price on these items.. The only way to get one would be to find a floor model or open box model. Subzero/Wolf will yank a retailer's authorization if they find them selling new goods for a discount. Yes, you can order from an out of state retailer to save the sales tax. But, you will have to find one that will eat the shipping charge. One problem with you plan is the Subzero installation. Your builder won't be able to do it. You need someone who is an authorized subzero installer. The refrigerators are built-in and difficult to install unless you know what you are doing. Wolf ovens won't require anything special, the gas cooktop will need adjusting. If you don't buy local, you will have a hard time finding someone who can do the authorized, warranty-certified installation. Yes, this policy sucks and is restraint of trade. It is what it is. Asking the question, can I do better on price is very reasonable. Unfortunately for you, the answer isn't entirely satisfactory. Rich people don't get rich by throwing their money around. They ask the question just like the original poster asked. Sometimes they get a favorable result, sometimes they don't. It costs nothing to ask.

There's almost always coupons for 10% off. Go to retailmenot.com and search overstock - I just got a 10% one there the other day. Which reminds me, I have an overstock question of my own to post.....

arizonarose, chijim, and lkplatow: Thanks for the information regarding the tax and promo. codes. If I could get no sales tax, cheap or free shipping plus 10% off it is looking very tempting to get a handknotted wool rug. I just wish the pics were better, but at least the descriptions are pretty good.

Wonder where all these rugs come from as they don't list any manufacturers? Since they are "overstock" where would they usually be sold at?

If anyone else has a postive/negative experience through overstock I'd be interested to know since I also saw some attractive end tables.

Shipping on overstock is $2.95 no matter what you buy. You can ocasionally find free shipping codes, but really, it's kind of pointless - you can do much better with a % off. I've bought lots of things through overstock and always had a good experience. One time I had to return something (it was a purse that was just junky quality) and I think they charged me a restocking fee - that was a bummer, but I think I read something about them not doing that anymore. But I've bought lots of books, jewelry, electronics, and a big exercise bike that shipped by freight carrier (for $2.95!) - everything was great with the exception of that purse. The prices and shipping are already fantastic - add the coupon code on top of that and you can't beat it. I agree that they need better pics though - I haven't ordered any rugs from them (yet) because the details and pics are kind of sketchy for such a big purchase - makes me nervous. But I know there are lots of folks here who have gotten rugs from them and been very pleased.

Val, I use an online broker called Ebates.com.

It is super easy, they don't bug you, and you save a certain percentage on anything you buy when you go to the site you want to shop at (in your case, Overstock).

I just checked and you get an extra 4% at Overstock. Instead of an immediate % off, they send you checks every quarter. I've received their checks so I know it works. You can still use whatever coupon or special a site happens to be running.

I also check my credit card company (Discover) which gives me cash back on everything I buy and see if I could save more if they happen to have a direct link and extra cash from a retailer. Every little bit helps.

By now, everyone must think I'm a real scrounge. :)

parma42: I'm turning into a scrouge as well so thanks for all the tips about ebates.com. I'll check into it. Over two years into the remodel and with today's economy every little bit helps!

I *just* purchased a rug for my upstairs landing yesterday. There is no sales tax, I got $2.95 shipping and I used a 10% off coupon from above. Rug, rug pad, and shipping cost me a toal of $160. I'll try to update when I recieve it.

I have purchased several items, furniture and rugs, from the big "O" and have been completely satisfied. Items were exactly as described and arrived in perfect condition.
No sales tax and they are always having specials.

Does overstock.com charge sales tax? Any promos?
