Cowhide rugs - wear well?
Comments (12)I have two: Dining room ... walked on constantly. 7 yrs old, no worn spots. Office ... has heavy, wooden desk chair with rollers on it, used often. Over 25 yrs old (it used to be in my dad's office), a couple of lightly-worn spots. As others have said, buy from a reputable source with a good knowledge of cowhides. I would never buy one from a chain store. For cleaning, I lightly vacuum with an attachment. A cowhide that has been processed correctly is very tough, after all, it has already been in all kinds of weather and conditions. I've never had any problems with shedding, curling, etc. I used to sell them here in Texas, our supplier is no longer in business, or I'd recommend them. If I couldn't find a good local place, I'd definitely order one online, from a place that specializes in hides. It's worth paying more for top quality, it will last a very long time. We always had a dozen scattered around the store, so they got very heavy traffic, and none looked worn at all. ETA: I've never noticed a smell, from mine or any I sold. Comments (1)I loved the idea of it as well, but I tried this and gave up. If you're using a chair with rollers, it's going to stretch and wrinkle up the hide. Perhaps you could make it work with a straight chair with legs. We have a cowhide under our dinette table and it has held up fine for three years with chair legs on it....See MoreCowhide Rug Hair Bleached
Comments (38)Pennydesign, Bev commented that "that's the reason she had her cat declawed. saves her tons of money by not having her furniture and rugs scratched". The OP stated that her cat claws her rug, which is why she used the spray that ended up bleaching out the black. So, I replied w/my retort about Bev's comment, mentioning doing other things so you don't have to mutilate your cats paws, merely so you can have nice things. I guess it got the ball rolling. as for the rug, for crying out loud, take it to a pro who will dye it. if you want to color it with a Sharpie, or India Ink, or hair dye, then try a small spot and see if it works. It's not brain surgery. Just don't cut off your cats first digits in order to save the rug....See MoreMemphis cowhide rug
